EE has announced that tube stations and tunnels on the eastern half of the London Underground’s Jubilee Line now have 4G mobile coverage to keep customers connected. The switch-on is part of a Transport for London (TfL) pilot.
With the launch, platforms and tunnels between Westminster and Canning Town will be covered. The firm said that coverage will extend to ticket halls and corridors within the stations too. Going forward, TfL wants to extend the pilot and cover the remaining platforms and tunnels of the Jubilee Line. This work is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
Marc Allera, CEO of BT’s consumer division, said:
“This is a big step for both connectivity, and for London. We’re looking forward to seeing how our customers use 4G on the Underground – it’s a big step forward for keeping entertained, and keeping in touch. We know how valuable that is, and this switch on aims to pave the way for a wider rollout across the Underground.”
Aside from EE customers, customers of BT Mobile and PlusNet Mobile, which operate on the EE network, will also benefit. The service has launched on the same day that TfL announced it was switching to a reduced service in response to more people working from home. If EE wanted to see how the network would cope, it’ll have to wait several months for that.
