And since Pelia was the one who suggested using musical signals and is responsible for the consequences, either get her dumb ass of the show or give her half a brain & something more constructive to do.... you would have that someone who has been around as long as she has would have either known about the "fold" thing already, or at least would have known better than to go screwing around with it.........

I'm pretty sure Gene's vision of the future did NOT include crap episodes like this, but he couldn't have predicted the writer's strike either, so there's that :D

I'm rewatching TOS for the past few weeks and I'm up to the Season 2, EP9, but some of the things they had to do to get themselves out of situations were also "silly" such as acting out to confuse Androids so they overloaded with confusion. Spock, more than once losing his composure and I haven't even seen that episode yet where Spock jams with space hippies. Uhura once danced and sang in the moonlight to distract the enemy in Star Trek V, and whatever you feel about that film personally, it is cannon.

Silly things have happened in Trek, and SNW adopted it from TOS. If anything they truly went back to the roots of the show.

SNW is no Picard.

True, TOS was camp, and it's nice to see they picked up some of these things from TOS and ran with it..

But TOS didn't have a musical episode, unlike SNW. I hate musical episodes in every show, not just ST.... 😡

The episode with the Lower Deck characters was hilarious, and a great idea! :D

We finally have Scotty! So, will they kill off Pela next season and he takes over or be like Kirk and go to another ship for some time...

Good casting and I agree about end of season cliffhangers, but that was also typical Trek with ST:TNG, DS9, VOY and Enterprise.

Whoever it was that decided to end it on that cliffhanger should be forced to watch ALL of Lost back to back, but denied the final episode...

I've been pretty busy as of late so I finally watched 9 and 10 back to back.   While the music bits in 9 aren't my cup of tea I give them points for doing it. 

I'd also like to point out that 9 did have some very good character development for Laan and also Spock when you break it down. 

 

Episode 10, cliffhanger aside was solid, and omg huge character introduction, which I loved.  The wait for season 3 is going to be tough with the strike going on, who knows when we'll get it. 

 

Laan wanting some of that James T Kirk is also as canon as it gets.

they have my vote for this.... I really like Carol as an actress in her other roles, but the role she has been given here is a complete waste of her talents and screen time...

Since her very 1st episode, I thought that she needed some warp-powered TLC, so she could lose that zombyfied, always-######-off-at-the-galaxy facade that she thinks makes her so seem so tuff to everyone.... yea yea, I know she had a rough childhood and carries alot of baggage from it, but still, just lighten up chic & make some friends already :)

It needs to have a 5 year run to match the 5 year mission statement.    After that they should go all in and jump into some TOS with these new actors.   I know some die hards might hate the idea, but think of it this way.  When we started off TOS Kirk and co were already on the ship for some time.  There's room there to show us how it all started and how Kirk took command and got to know everyone over time.   TOS only had 3 seasons, you could think of it as the last 3 years of the 5 year mission, so we still have the first 2 years to work with.

Well, technically speaking it got all 5... if you include TAS. 😬

Presumably Pike has the accident and Kirk has to come in and rebuild moral. However I don't think that there is anything to say that Pike only has 5 years in command.

This one says that Pike's accident accident was 2268/2269 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_Star_Trek) while this one says 2266 (https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Christopher_Pike#Career_as_Fleet_captain)

If his first 5 year mission ended in 2259 and Kirk doesn't take over until 2264, then there is room for a second 5 year mission or to be doing something in between the end of the 5 year mission and being called in for refit. Certainly, if series 1 is 2259 then it can go out to 2264 as series 5.

Strange New Worlds has been renewed for a 4th season, currently season 3 is being filmed now.

I think 5 seasons is good, though if it's a show I like more like SNW, you'd want more of course.  But if you treat each season as a year of the mission then it works out.

I have a feeling the plan is to do 5 seasons and then see where they go from there.  I wouldn't complain if we got more but if each season is 1 year of the 5 year mission, then I'm cool with it.

      Google reportedly set to lose two key Gemini and DeepMind researchers to Anthropic by Karthik Mudaliar Google is reportedly preparing to lose two more prominent artificial intelligence researchers, with Gemini contributors Jonas Adler and Alexander Pritzel planning to join rival AI developer Anthropic. According to a report from Bloomberg, both researchers are viewed internally as important contributors to Google’s flagship Gemini model family. Adler worked on Google’s AI coding efforts, while Pritzel was involved in the process used to train AI systems. Neither company has publicly confirmed the moves. The report also does not say when the researchers will formally leave Google or what positions they will hold at Anthropic. Training a large AI model requires decisions covering its architecture, data preparation, distributed computing infrastructure, and post-training methods that shape how the finished system behaves. Researchers with experience operating at the scale of Gemini are consequently difficult to replace quickly. Both Adler and Pritzel have previously contributed to Google DeepMind’s scientific research as well. They are listed among the authors of the company’s work on expanding AlphaFold protein-structure predictions across entire proteomes, alongside AlphaFold researchers including John Jumper. The reported departures arrive shortly after another important change within Google’s Gemini organization. Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer is leaving Google for OpenAI, after returning to the search company in 2024 through its deal with Character.AI. Shazeer is particularly well known as one of the authors of the Transformer paper, whose architecture became the foundation for most modern large language models. Anthropic, meanwhile, has been recruiting recognizable figures from other leading laboratories. OpenAI co-founder and former Tesla AI director Andrej Karpathy joined Anthropic’s pre-training team in May. His move, followed by the reported recruitment of several Google researchers, suggests Anthropic is strengthening the research teams responsible for the core capabilities of future Claude models rather than concentrating solely on product and enterprise sales. The competition is complicated by the companies’ extensive commercial relationships. Anthropic competes directly with Google’s Gemini models, but it also relies on Google as an infrastructure partner. In April, Anthropic announced an expanded agreement with Google and Broadcom covering multiple gigawatts of next-generation Tensor Processing Unit capacity.       Google adds built-in computer control to Gemini 3.5 flash by Karthik Mudaliar Google has added Computer Use as a built-in tool in Gemini 3.5 Flash, giving developers a single model that can reason about a task and operate graphical interfaces across browsers, mobile devices, and desktop environments. The feature is available through the Gemini API and Google’s Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, although it remains a preview feature for now. Computer Use enables an AI agent to examine screenshots and return actions such as mouse clicks, scrolling, and keyboard input. A developer’s application must execute those actions, capture the resulting screen, and send it back to Gemini, creating a continuous loop until the task is completed. Google says the integration can be used for activities including repetitive form filling, application testing, research across multiple websites, and longer enterprise workflows. Gemini 3.5 Flash can work with browser, mobile, and desktop environments, whereas Google’s earlier standalone Computer Use model was primarily positioned around browser interaction. The main change is consolidation. Computer control was previously offered through the separate Gemini 2.5 Computer Use preview model. Gemini 3.5 Flash itself was announced in May as Google’s latest fast model for coding and multi-step agent workflows. It supports a one-million-token input context window and up to 65,000 output tokens, along with adjustable thinking levels that let developers trade additional reasoning for lower latency and cost. Google also added that Gemini 3.5 Flash received targeted adversarial training for computer-use scenarios. The company is also offering safeguards that can require user confirmation before sensitive or irreversible actions and automatically stop a workflow when suspected prompt injection is detected. Its developer documentation describes configurable protections for areas such as financial transactions and changes to sensitive records. Google isn't the first to bring Computer Use to its platform. Anthropic has made computer control available through Claude, while OpenAI has continued improving computer-use performance in its recent models. Microsoft has also applied the concept to business workflows, including a Computer Use capability for the Researcher agent in Microsoft 365 Copilot.
