When headlines collide

Not quite the same as the dead When threads collide topic (which only allowed for forum topic funnies). Let's see if we can start a new game where headlines and content close together collide.

I'll start (from an email newsletter from today)

Fortnite will be hosting the 'FreeFortnite' tournament this Sunday
      by Ather Fawaz

Epic Games and Apple have been locking horns ever since the popular battle royale game, Fortnite, introduced a new direct payment solution that was against the App Store's policy. Resultantly, Apple booted Fortnite from the App Store. In the aftermath, Epic Games sued the Cupertino firm for its policies and mocked its famous 1984 commercial. In retaliation, Apple discontinued Epic's developer account, essentially cutting the company off from iOS and macOS developer tools.

In the latest development in this fight, Epic Games just announced a #FreeFortnite tournament set for Sunday, August 23, which it is touting as the last opportunity for players on all platforms to play Fortnite together. This is due to the fact that the game is gearing up for its Chapter 2 - Season 4 launch on August 27, but players on iOS devices will be left behind on Chapter 2 - Season 3.

1,200 pieces of gaming phones, consoles, and PCs will be up for grabs. These include Alienware gaming laptop, Samsung Galaxy Tab S7, OnePlus 8, PlayStation 4 Pro, Xbox One X, and Nintendo Switch. Further, any player who scores at least 10 points in the tournament can earn the Tart Tycoon Outfit and 20,000 top-scoring players will receive a special cap too.

As expected, the device list does not contain Apple devices. After all, it is a tournament that has been dubbed as the #FreeFortnite campaign against Apple. For more details and the format of the tournament, you may follow this link.

EndeavorRX is the first prescription video game approved by the FDA for kids with ADHD
      by Ather Fawaz

Game developer Akili Interactive's EndeavorRX is the first video game to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a prescriptive medicine for kids with ADHD in the United States (via The Verge). Formerly known as ProjectEVO, EndeavorRX can now be suggested to kids between the age of 8-12 years who are suffering from the disorder.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD for short, is a mental health disorder that can cause hyperactivity and impulsive behavior amongst both adults in children. This often leads to an inability to maintain focus on a subject for long periods of time.

After undergoing a testing phase involving clinical trials that studied over 600 children, the game exhibited some positive results in dealing with the disorder. A third of the kids treated “no longer had a measurable attention deficit on at least one measure of objective attention” after playing the game for 25 minutes a day, over a period of five days a week for a total of four weeks. Improvements in the impairments caused by ADHD due to EndeavorRX were sustained for a month and the only disclosed side-effects of the game include frustration and headaches.

Despite this, the doctors working in conjunction with the game developers stated that the game is certainly not the alternative to existing recommendations and treatments for ADHD. Details of the complete study conducted by the doctors on EndeavorRX can be found on The Lancet. The game currently has a waitlist. If you are interested in checking it out, you may join the program here.

Porsche's Mobil 1 Supercup Virtual Edition will be live-streamed
      by Ather Fawaz

The suspension of sporting events courtesy of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a significant rise in the popularity of esports. Last month, Formula 1 launched its Virtual Grand Prix series to replace postponed races. NASCAR also went digital and its virtual race became the most-watched esports TV show in history.

Now, Porsche has joined the ranks as well. The German automobile manufacturer will be live-streaming its Mobil 1 Supercup Virtual Edition on April 4 at 10:00 AM Eastern time. The iRacing-based series will have a total of 32 drivers. Out of these 32, 22 are full-time Supercup racers and the rest are factory and young professional drivers sponsored by companies like Vodafone and TAG Heuer.

The first track featured will be Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain where the drivers will take their Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars for two virtual races spanning 145 minutes. The racing series will have three more events on April 18 at Silverstone, on April 25 at the infamous Spa-Francorchamps, and on May 16 at Monza. If you are interested, you can watch these races online or on TV networks like Germany's Sport1 and the Netherlands' Ziggo Sport.

Fortnite brings Season 10 to an end by sucking everything into a black hole
      by Ather Fawaz

Sunday, October 13, 2019, marks the end of the tenth season of Fortnite, a game that took the world by storm when it first launched back in 2017 and has since then become one of the most popular games in recent history. The finale dubbed "The End" has taken Fortnite fans by surprise and the events of the day have gotten fans talking about the game and what the future holds for it.

In the culmination of the tenth season, "The End" began by having a spate of rockets flying haywire over the map in tandem with a big meteor shower which was then followed by a huge asteroid hitting the map. Subsequently, the Fortnite map and all the players in-game during the time of the live event were sucked into a rift and the entire setting was ultimately replaced with what seems like a black hole. Following these events, the game has been left unplayable.

Image via Fortnite's Twitter Profile The description of the events and the picture above seem confusing and a lot to take in so here's a video posted by the YouTuber Ali-A broadcasting "The End" to the world:

Usually, at the end of each season, the game throws some interesting events in the mix. Previously, we have had rocket launches, meteor showers, and volcanic eruptions, among others. But this season's ending has a different air of mystery surrounding it. Indeed, players have depicted their shock at last night's event:

While others are missing the game and wondering when it will return.

Epic Games, the video game company that owns Fortnite, previously confirmed that the "The End" would take place on 13 October. Interestingly, Fortnite's official twitter account has also removed all its tweets and activity bar one post, which is a live view of the black hole that is currently 'engulfing' the world of Fortnite.

The same black hole also keeps spewing out some numbers from time to time and we can't help but think, "The numbers, Mason! What do they mean?"

All in all, it is highly unlikely that Fortnite is gone for good, for obvious reasons. Many have envisaged that season 11 of the game will bring with it a new map. Forbes spotted the new rendition of the game's map on the Italian Apple App Store titled "Capitolo 2", which when translated into English, literally means "Chapter 2". So it is quite clear that Fortnite is here to stay.
