So originally there was 9x and NT, then they dropped 9x and ported stuff to into NT 5.1 with XP. Then there was NT Desktop and NT server till 2005-ish(?) when Vista was rebased on the Server code. With there being WIN 11 with all its changes and Server still being more Win 10-like now are the code basses splitting more back into how it was with XP and Server with them having similar but also separate code bases? Or are some of the 11 changes being ported back to Server?

Windows Server vNext is using the same kernel as Windows 11 Dev builds, the current versions are as follows:

They haven't decided on a name for Windows Server yet, so they are calling it vNext.

Hello,

Microsoft has used "v.Next" to refer to the next version of a Windows operating system for some time now.  I think I first heard an employee use the term during the Windows Vista timeframe.
