My screen keeps turning itself on when Windows 10 is locked

Recommended Posts

I can't believe I can't search for this problem, because all the results I get is for behaviors that are expected, like "Windows 10 keeps turning displays off 1 minute after I lock the PC"

That is what I want, but when I am watching a movie, I can see the screen turning on by itself without anyone's interaction. I even switched off my K800 Logitech keyboard because I thought somehow that was causing it.

I have a Logitech Brio Windows Hello camera and when I see the screen is powered on I have the message "Windows is looking for you" even though I am sitting across the room and not facing the PC when it happens. It is really annoying now that we have dark evenings because it lights up the room when the screen turns itself on.

By default the screen powers off after 1 minute, it is connected to DisplayPort.

It actually started doing it when I started using the Logitech K800 with the Unifier USB (from this past Saturday) but turning the keyboard off doesn't seem to help the issue.

I have had G Hub installed for far longer than Logitech Options and Logitech Bolt, because I have had the Logitech G502 Hero mouse for ages, which uses G Hub, but didn't cause the screen on issues I am having now, which is basically all the time.

I had to install Logitech Options and Logitech Bolt for the K800 keyboard and MX Master 2 (originally was prompted to install Logitech Options+ I mean why the hell do Logitech have so many different programs for their devices??) I uninstalled Logitech Options+ because that does not support the K800 while Options supports both K800 and the MX Master 2. Although the MX Master 2 is powered off and I am actually using the Logitech G502 Hero mouse.

What troubleshooting steps have you done so far? You've confirmed if you unplug whatever it works as expected?

I already mentioned in my post that I tried turning off the keyboard, but that doesn't help.

I have had this on a number of occasions on desktops and laptops, on and off since Windows Vista up to Windows 11. For this reason, I basically disabled the sleep mode, and ensured my computers would either hibernate or shut down instead. I seem to recall that a reinstall fixed the issue every now and then, but like you, I could never figure out the actual cause of the problem.

Other things I would do was disabling any wake timers, along with the magic packets for both ethernet and wifi. Wireless keyboards also played a part on my desktop with Vista back in the day. These "always on" PC's is clearly a dream for MS, but it's my nightmare. One day they'll get it right, until then though, it's a ###### experience.

The problem really started when I added the K800 from Logitech, and although I already had G Hub installed for my G502 Hero mouse I have a suspicion that it is to do with Logitech software. Right now I have enabled memory mode for my mouse and disabled G Hub from starting with Windows, so I will see if that helps. I have at least been able to confirm that it isn't the keyboard causing the screen wake, because I turned it off last night and it kept happening.

I built this machine in 2019 and over time I have disabled all these wake timers and other crap 😛

Only changes are as follows (done on Saturday):

  • Managed to score a boxed MX900 desktop (K800 keyboard + MX Master 2 mouse)
  • Was prompted to install Logitech Options+ when I powered on both devices after connecting the Logitech Unifier USB
  • Saw that Logitech Options+ does not support the K800 keyboard
  • After a quick search saw I had to install Logitech Options
  • Was then prompted to install Logitech Bolt (I think it is the successor to Logitech Unifying Software)
  • Saw that Logitech Options supports both K800 and MX Master 2
  • Uninstalled Logitech Options+

Screen now wakes randomly from locked state (normally powers off after a minute) it is distracting enough that it lights the room.

Use this to double check in an elevated cmd prompt.

powercfg -devicequery wake_armed

Use this to disable:

powercfg -devicedisablewake "device name"

ive seen this same behavior on two of my work laptops - that is - my previous laptop as well as the one i currently use today. I lock the screen, and the screen goes black after one minute. never been able to figure out why.

My couch computer one night would start waking up from sleep every 20 seconds.

I wouldn't have minded it so much, but when it would wake up, I would hear thuds via the computer speaker's subwoofer. That I could hear from bed. So, I tried restarting the computer, then put it to sleep. Then for good measure I turned the speakers off.

In my case, a restart fixed it.

How many days has this been happening? Have you restarted since then? Not a power off but a restart? You may want to try that and see what happens if you haven't done an actual restart yet.

oh nevermind, it's turning itself on.

What does this do specifically?

it shows you which devices are wake enabled

Thanks. What is that Nvidia USB thing I don't have anythig plugged in there.. and I see the usual suspects of keyboards and mouse.

Ethernet can be disabled. I thought I already disabled Wake on LAN.

Run the command again and see if it's truly disabled.

Use this to disable.

powercfg -devicedisablewake "device name"

Replace the device name reported in the first command that you want to disable.

Example:

powercfg -devicedisablewake "Nvidia USB Type-C Port Policy Controller"

Yea it is, but it keeps happening. I am almost certain it is the shit Logitech software.

Steven, I just saw you mention the Logitech KB and Mouse and I looked up what I used to use..

Between 2009 and 2018 I had a Logitech DiNovo Media BT KB & MX900 mouse.
Sounds like the Logitech software to me! I can't believe I ever figured that out! Also, if this issue has been occurring for over 10 years, what on earth are Logitech doing with their software?!

When this happens are there any sounds or vibrations which might be sensed by your mouse? I've found the slightest vibrations I have affecting my mouse including my desk and mouse pad can cause the screen to wake up.

Nope, but when I turn my keyboard off and turn the mouse over when locking the PC, it no longer wakes.. so I am still leaning towards terrible Logitech software.

For example, I need Logitech Options for the keyboard, but I need GHub for the mouse (both made by logitech) In fact I was prompted to install Logitech Options+ because the MX Master 3 is supported by it (I don't use it anyway, but I have it installed, and powered off as backup), but the K800 keyboard is not supported on Options+.

I tried going back to Setpoint, because I remembered that worked far better, but the latest Setpoint does not let me configure the K800, so it is pretty useless so I uninstalled it.

Is there an app where we can see what activates the lockscreen? I can hear USB being connected or disconnected when it happens too, goddamn annoying.

Surely there's an app which shows the latest events for waking the screen, connecting or disconnecting USB?

Maybe ones of Nir Sofer's apps can help?

The other one would be Sysinternals.

Have you tried this?

"powercfg /systempowerreport"

That will generate an HTML report full of detailed information about what's is waking the computer up. (Search for "ENTRY REASON" and "EXIT REASON")

Just read that powercfg was already mentioned.

Have you simply looked at Event Viewer --- Windows Logs --- System?

As an example...I set my monitor to "sleep" after 1 minute. After it went to sleep I moved the mouse....

Yeah nothing in event logs about a disconnected USB and the screen waking.

I now have USBLogView from NirSoft and that should tell me what USB is disconnecting after more than an hour when the PC is locked and the screen is off, causing the screen to come on and Windows Hello to look for me. I'll be able to test this later when I am watching the football 😛

BTW I already turn over my mouse after locking my PC.

The other crap I have to deal with is Logitech's terrible build quality of the K800 (and/or the Options software) which keeps going spastic with the backlight coming on all by itself even though there is no-one near the keyboard and nothing moving above it.
