Possible components for a (mostly) 4k build w/ GPU passthrough?

Recommended Posts

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

  • Able to pass a second GPU through to a VM of Windows (GOG games? Steam?) natively running Linux (Mint). Play games

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, FPS, game settings)

  •  Resolution: 1080p (if needed, or 1440p) up to 4k (at some point?)
  •  FPS - Up to or around 60, since I only have 60 hz monitors.  May like to try 120+ if possible

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

  • Would 800 (or more) be possible?

What country are you purchasing your parts?

USA

  • Though probably not needed it could be nice to have a little more max RAM headroom (current is 32 GB), also if possible sticking with DDR3 (since I already have it). Oh and NO overclocking at all - I live in one of the hottest states (during summer) I don't need the extra heat, nor we exactly get cold winters.

Possible suggestions for components:

- CPU

  • Would like to passthrough a GPU through to a virtual machine to run GOG games and or Steam games. If i need to use Intel again, so be it but I would like to try Ryzen.

-GPU

  • Have a 2070 super currently

- Case

  • Hopefully USB C / 3 (/4?) ports on the front
  • Hopefully quit like the HAF X (since someone sleeps in the room "above")
  • I'd like screwless (like HAF X) if possible, Less chance of screws getting warped
  • Hopefully pretty cleanable (filters?)

- Storage

  • I have a fair amount of SSDs (2/3) internal drives connected via adapters) along with two HDDs
  • Would like to try NVME as the boot drive, and possibly at least some of the game storage.

- RAM

  • Most likely DDR4
  • Probably start out with 16 (or 32)GB and move along to 48 or 64 GB.

-Motherboard

  • Hopefully as (/supports) bluetooth (I use bluetooth speakers)
  • Maybe try to get a (second) ps5 controller to use on the new system (I have one for the steam deck)

- PSU

  • Hopefully pretty energy effiicent.
  • I'd probably like semi (or fully) modular since that decreases amount of cables in the case

when would I build it?

- I'd like to try to build it by at least end of Jan, 2023.

Typed all this on a steamdeck.

Add "PSU" and one/two points to case

Check these AMD GPU deals. https://www.neowin.net/deals/black-friday-2022-absolutely-insane-amd-rx-6900-xt-6800-6700-6600-gpu-deals/ The RX 6700 XT 12GB for $350 will serve you well for many years to come at 1080p and is a great 1440p60 GPU (with passthrough you'll lose some performance so you could even aim for the RX 6800 for $480 if the budget allows).

Also good deals on Ryzen as well. https://www.neowin.net/deals/amds-ryzen-5000-cpu-series-is-now-up-to-50-off/a  A 5700G will give you the option for a decent integrated graphics and it's only around $170.

A helpful guide:

RAM corsair ddr4 3600 cl16 2x16gb https://www.amazon.com/CORSAIR-Vengeance-2x16GB-PC4-28800-Desktop/dp/B09C5VRSRG/ ($128)

I think this is a great time to build a PC since prices are quite low.
