Well, this isn't really just an Ohio problem as it is a nationwide problem. One thing I'm reminded of is how lax security was at the airport pre-9/11. When you consider just how drastic of an impact train derailments can have with all the chemicals they carry, it really should be something treated with much higher priority.

This is why I linked the two from Louisiana, the one from my own city of Houston, and the other one mudslag posted as well. This problem isn't going away anytime soon, and it's questionable to be worried about balloons from China when it doesn't take more than stopping a vehicle on the tracks to cause a disaster environmental problem. 🙄

You do realise that it's possible for 2 different departments to be concerned with 2 different things at the same time, right?  Last time I checked, national defence and security didn't have much to do with train regulation OR environmental protection...

I think the actual point here is our idiot government doesn’t do ###### until a crisis occurs. Nothing is ever pre-emptive.

I live near Pitt and for the past week my air quality monitor in my house that I have has CONSTANTLY been reporting high VOC and other contaminates in the air almost non-stop, and I rarely get these warnings on it except for really hot summer days when ozone is wild.....

Not good. I live in lower PA/mid-Atlantic. I do not have an air quality monitor but I figured we would be getting some of that crap. Anything that happens west of us (in the entire country), usually flows through here. Which is why I'm for a cleaner environment.

Not sure this explains the whole situation (as their whole show does), but it seems the evidence used to suggest the air and water were safe, was by using the tests done by Norfolk Southern... which really begs the question why you'd have the company responsible doing this testing instead of the EPA...

EPA should be doing all the testing and charging NFS at 3x the rate

I'm sure this is just a coincidence but one of my AQM's (I have a couple brands) for some reason the data for dust and VOC's was zero value for a few days after they let that tanker burn... just odd considering I've never seen it zero out before like that

image.png.d53d715588c432bc094dab18cb700483.png

Why did it zero from 2/14 to 2/19? just odd and all those high spikes of PM2.5 and PM1 particles ugh.. there was data there on 2/19 it just vanished yesterday, and this is stored on a cloud service

That would seem to indicate an overflow in the measurement values...  If the values exceed what the sensor can measure, returning a zero isn't unheard of...

there was data there though that wasn't off the charts two days ago, now it's just a flat spot

I just hope the rest of the first world nations are watching America and while they're shaking their collective heads in disbelief are actually paying attention to how the U.S found itself in such a perilous position in relation to politicians being owned by corporations.

I always say this but, capitalism is much closer to communism than socialism.

Y'see, there's a couple of types of capitalism... Social Capitalism, and Corporate Capitalism...  Guess which one American went with?

I didn't realize a failure of transportation needs to have casualties before we can expect politicians to do anything about it. This seems like a stupid metric.

Pete Buttigieg wouldn't have his own constituents calling him out if he would at least act with some level of urgency. Granted, it's not like he's shown urgency in any situation, let alone come up with any sort of plan of action. Bernie Sanders doing his homework for him kinda shows how pitiful he is.

If Biden is to run for 2024, he could fire this guy and probably win over more conservative voters. Don't give Trump ammo.

His only urgency is getting the regulations back in place to prevent future accidents.

Urgency requires taking action when you're supposed to, not when you've taken so long that your own party is calling you out. :ermm:

This has been a repeated issue with this guy who seems to have taken on a job he thought he could blow off. This just from the last year...

The government moves slowly and I'm not making any excuses for Buttigieg but everyone complaining is just looking for political wins.

I'm more concerned with the EPA and why they didn't take control of the situation.  Instead, the governor of Ohio decided to listen to the Norfolk Southern Railway in burning off the toxic chemicals.

This is why I prefer the politically agnostic approach, rather than looking next to a rep's name for the R or D before deciding whether I'm angry or not and posting memes like any other Facebook thread. :p

Anyway, it looks like the company is also having to rethink sick days now...

Norfolk Southern, in wake of toxic derailment, gives in on sick days for one of its unions

"The announcement comes hours after the company’s chief financial officer, Mark George, told investors that it is still struggling to fill the open positions it has at almost all 95 locations where staff is based. George also said the company may have cut staff too deep during the early days of the pandemic, and that it has had trouble bringing back laid-off staff members."

$51bn company btw... I don't blame the people not wanting to come back to this circus either.

So apparently, Nina Turner is the only politician sensible enough to recognize how to show empathy, gain support of the Ohio community, and maybe actually shift the numbers when it comes time to vote.

If the messaging was different at the start, Trump wouldn't have been able to use the tragedy as a stage.

Her on CNN (video in link):

    • This is a none story - these low volume Chinese models will always get new experimental features first because Apple and Samsung can't produce them in huge volume to meet demand.
    • Nvidia GeForce NOW gains support for Dark Scrolls, Empulse, and more by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The final update of June for Nvidia's cloud gaming service GeForce NOW is now available, and it is touting support for six more games. The company is also drawing subscriber attention towards the summer sales kicking off across stores, so they can stock up on more cloud-supported titles. Of course, the Steam Summer Sale is the biggest promotion, which is kicking off later today. "Supported Steam games can be streamed across devices with GeForce NOW, making it easy to buy a game once, keep progress synced and pick up where the gameplay left off on PCs, Macs, handheld devices, phones, TVs and more," says the company. "In other words, the Steam Summer Sale brings the deals; GeForce NOW adds the flexibility." Don't forget that the GeForce NOW summer sale is still active as well. This limited-time offer drops the 12-month Performance membership from $99.99 to $64.99, saving members $35. At the same time, the 12-month Ultimate membership is currently going for $129.99, dropping the price by $70 from the original $199.99. Here are the games joining GeForce NOW's supported list this week: Dark Scrolls (New release on Steam, available June 22) SAND: Raiders of Sophie (New release on Steam, available June 22) Deer & Boy (New release on Steam, available June 23) EMPULSE (New release on Steam, available June 24) The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales (Steam) FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves (Steam) With the June expansions coming to an end, Nvidia should be announcing its July GeForce NOW plans next week. Keep in mind that, unlike subscription services like Game Pass or EA Play, a copy of a game must be owned by the GeForce NOW member (or at least have a license via PC Game Pass) to start playing via Nvidia's cloud servers. There is also a limit to how many hours subscribers can use the service per month.
