Microsoft's stream of worries continues unabated, what with the company confirming the reported leak of part of its source code over the internet on Thursday, for which an FBI enquiry has been sought.

The rumors of leak of source code for Windows 2000 and Windows NT on underground sites was first reported on Thursday afternoon by pro-Microsoft site Neowin.net. Microsoft (US) later confirmed the rumors on late Thursday evening.

Betanews.net, a tech news site which investigated the leaked source code, says that portions of the code viewed seems to look like windows 2000 and contains a mix of library files, executables, text documents, scripts, and un-compiled code.

The claimed leaked Windows 2000 source code archive contains 30,915 files totaling approximately 13.5 million lines. The source is dated July 25, 2000, placing it after the official release of the operating system, which was rumored to contain between 35 and 50 million lines of code in its entirety.

The site also does not verify the rumors about Windows NT also being available, and it now appears that only parts of windows 2000 was leaked online

As obvious Microsoft is going for an FBI inquiry into the episode since it is considered that the source codes have been ?illegally made available on the Internet?.

Microsoft (India) spokespeople were not available for comment at the time of writing this article.
