Netscape 6.1 for me!

However, Mozilla is just as good, but Netscape 6.1 just has a slightly better performance and support as I tested! Internet Explorer 6 isn't bad, but it does tick me off at times! Opera is good as well, sometimes faster than Netscape 6.1, but Netscape 6.1 has far greater web support! And if you want to know what I would choose as the worst, I wouldn't say IE 5, but rather, AOL!

Geez, me the only Opera user.

I started with Netscape 3, but changed to Nets. 4 when it came out. It started to get too old for some sites and I took one look at Netscape 6 and laughed. I didn't like Mozilla or IE5 so I went searching and found Opera.

I love the way Opera has all the browser windows within one - I tend to have up to 10 windows open at once and only Opera (or Netcaptor hahaha) can do with without clogging the taskbar. I also love many small features in Opera like on the address bar you can type "g word to search for" and it will search Google for "word to search for" - very handy (although I've since discovered the Google IE bar, which does the job). Opera's download manager is excellent too. It's not so horrendously, sickeningly bloated and buggy like Gozilla or Getright, but it still allows stopping and restarting of downloads.

The only problems with Opera is it's a bit dull looking, the internal mail/news reader/writers are limited (they don't even allow HTML reading - which is strange for a browser, although I'd personally against HTML emails/news), although they are fast and I do use the email client, so it's not too bad. Opera is also a stickler for HTML standards. If a site doesn't use HTML standards, it will not be displayed properly - and this is many sites. Of course I would prefer the site to work perfectly because people write the site properly, but realistically, Opera isn't going to change the designer's design methods and I occasionally have to view a site in IE6 to use it properly - again, this is the designers fault, but it's not going to change.

I would use IE6 (which i have installed), but there are too many little annoyances like every time you enter an non-existent URL it goes and loads a MS site. It also doesn't have windows within windows or a good download manager.

I also tried Mozilla, which is good but doesn't have anything that IE doesn't and is slower (although I don't like IE's reasons for being faster, I still like the speed).

Neoplanet is pretty good - maybe a little too fancy, but it's fast enough (IE technology behind it). It doesn't allow all browser windows within one either, and - the hotlist bar in one the wrong side! This is quite annoying, as 70% of pages only use the left half of my screen. In IE/Mozilla/Opera they are pushed over by the hotlist bar so the page is more central and I now find Neoplanet's right hand side bar annoying :( - but if they could straighten out a few glaring errors and allow all browser windows inside the one window, I may well change.

But none are the stability, windows within window capability and little features of Opera, so until Neoplanet, Mozilla or IE improve, Opera will remain my no1 choice.

I kinda do this. Opera 95% of the time, but for teh occasional site that used IE only java or something I have IE6 on my quickstart bar and I copy&paste the URL over. It's quick load times makes this a very handy system.

To remove IE and other Win98 crud:

www.98lite.net/products.html

or:

www.tweakpc.com/98lite.htm

IE 1 and 2 were the same!

They both supported tables, font size and font colour

Navigator 1.1 was a bit behind.

It supported tables and font size but not font color :D

Now IE6, Netscape 6.1, Opera 5.11 and Mozilla all support basically everything from font size to XML.

AOL Browser 5 is still way behind the times, but who cares :)

Webgraph, i know your a linux/netscape/anything not MS lover but u have to admit IE is WAY better than netscape! IE starts way faster and loads pages faster and everything, im sure that with ur netscape **** u can't view some pages right. Lets just take hotmail for example, look at it in netscape then look at it in IE.....BIG difference

Im sure that if IE would be supported in Linux i would proly at least dual boot linux but since linux lack of a good browser no thank you!!

Rudy, I have tested both browsers thoroughly, and you might think I am lying here, but I am not! Netscape 6.1 is indeed the true browser champion! Not only in speed, but also in standards-compliance, stability, functionality, the whole nine yards! IE crashed my PC more often, it's too f***ing slow, and the only thing that makes it a big deal is that it's integrated into Windows! So Rudy, I know you're lying here since I always check every damn detail when I test software! If you're comparing it with 4.77, then maybe, but not with 6.1! And also, Netscape 6.1 displays the pages just as good and in some cases, better than IE!

And it does take more than 5 seconds for ie6 to load up? Also, what about that annoying F*N splash screen that netscape 6 pops up? On my 1.2ghz tbird it takes much longer for netscape to load than ie6.

Are most people going to want to do this to make their browser load faster???! (Though it didn't help my load time at all!)

Is it possible to disable the splash screen that displays every time Netscape 6 is started?

Applies To: Netscape 6.1; All Windows platforms

Yes. Right click on your desktop shortcut and choose properties. In the 'Target' box, add a space and then "-quiet" (minus the quotes) to the END of the path. When done, it should look similar to this:

"C:Program FilesNetscapeNscp61netscp6.exe" -quiet

You can combine this with other options such as the profile switch. In that case, it may look like this:

"C:Program FilesNetscapeNscp61netscp6.exe" -P "jdoe" -quiet

Obviously, your path and profile names may differ.

    • Microsoft AI boss no longer believes that AI will replace human workers by David Uzondu Mustafa Suleyman, the head of Microsoft AI, recently took back his statements concerning white-collar jobs that he gave to the Financial Times in an interview made back in February, where he claimed that AI would replace office workers within 12 to 18 months. On Monday's episode of The Verge's Decoder, Suleyman recast the technology as more like a helpmate than a tool designed to take over your job. He explained that smaller office duties will "increasingly become digitized, automated" as people generate more digital materials. During the discussion, Suleyman emphasized a "very important distinction" between "tasks" and "jobs" to clarify his previous claims. He argued that his earlier comments only referred to individual actions that people perform at their desks. Suleyman used to work for DeepMind, the research lab he co-founded in 2010 alongside Demis Hassabis and Shane Legg, before he left in 2022 to establish Inflection AI and build an empathetic digital assistant. Microsoft hired him in March 2024 to lead its newly formed "Microsoft AI" division, placing him in charge of consumer products like Copilot, Bing, and Edge. His February comments also detailed plans for Microsoft to achieve self-sufficiency with a $140 billion infrastructure budget to train frontier models, predicting that creating a customized AI will soon feel like creating a podcast or a new blog: The 41-year-old is not the only AI executive who's softened his "AI will replace you" stance. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, last month used X to push back against employment panic by arguing that his startup builds tools to assist humans rather than build replacements. He had previously garnered backlash by suggesting that many modern office roles that AI might replace did not qualify as "real work" in the first place, at least when you compare desk jobs to physical, historical labor like farming.

    • Meta will now use data from outside businesses to personalize AI responses by David Uzondu In an update that's rolling out globally (except in a handful of countries), Meta will use your data from outside businesses to personalize your AI responses and your primary feeds. Meta already utilizes your shopping activity to target ads, but the company now plans to expand this tracking to personalize other "parts of your experience" like feed algorithms and AI assistant chats. The company is replacing the two settings ("Your activity off Meta technologies" and "Activity from other businesses") that currently let you disconnect off-platform activity with a single, renamed setting called Activity from other businesses. If you don't want Meta to manipulate your feed and AI responses using your outside history, you can just turn the Activity from other businesses setting off in your account settings. This toggle resides within your Accounts Center, applying your choice to every connected profile. Turning this off will not stop companies from sending your data to Meta. The company will still collect your web interactions, but it only uses them to train products, while still accessing external accounts you connect. When The Verge spoke to Meta spokesperson Emil Vazquez, the representative said that this update will exclude several locations at launch, including the European region, the UK, Brazil, Thailand, South Africa, Turkey, South Korea, Ecuador, Nigeria, and Kenya. The new update comes at a time when the social media giant is recovering from a major PR disaster involving generative AI. Last week, there was a huge security issue on Instagram where attackers figured out a way to trick Meta AI into handing over account ownership (even if the victim had 2FA enabled). Some of the affected accounts include the dormant Obama White House profile, cosmetics brand Sephora, the Chief Master Sergeant of the Space Force, and security researcher Jane Manchun Wong. Internally, the company also had to scale back plans on its Model Capability Initiative (MCI), an employee-monitoring program designed to train corporate AI models by recording worker keystrokes and screen activity, after employees raised privacy concerns and complained about severe battery life drain.
