MachineGames finally working on a new Wolfenstein, according to reports

According to fresh reports, MachineGames is returning to tell a new tale in the Wolfenstein universe just as a TV show is being spun up at Amazon.
Wolfenstein II The New Colossus

The Wolfenstein franchise has been on ice for quite a few years now, with the most recent mainline installment landing in 2017 with Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. While two spin-offs have landed since then, the co-op Youngblood and VR entry Cyberpilot, the studio has been busy with some other games and DLC projects. However, it seems fans of the alternative universe experience are finally getting a new mainline entry that continues the story.

B.J. Blazkowicz's story is seemingly continuing, according to two new reports that landed today, with both Windows Central and Kotaku saying that their sources have confirmed that Wolfenstein III is in development at MachineGames.

In a recent documentary following the Swedish studio, MachineGames co-founder and current head Jerk Gustafsson outright said that "we have a story to tell" about Blazkowicz.

"I think this is important to say, because we have always seen this as a trilogy," added Gustafsson last year. "So that journey for BJ, even during those first weeks at id, when we mapped out New Order, we still had the plan for at least that character."

Unfortunately, other than relaying the information that a new game is in development at the studio, the sources of the reports had not revealed any information about the actual project. Considering that MachineGames only recently wrapped up developing its well-received Indiana Jones game, it may still be years before new Wolfenstein materializes, even if the reports are true.

The timing does make sense for a new entry though. Last year, it was also revealed that Amazon MGM Studios has begun working on a Wolfenstein television show under Patrick Somerville. Amazon's Fallout TV series has been resonating quite well with fans, and it may be looking to duplicate that success with this franchise as well.
