It was in 2023 that Sony announced Marathon as the next game of its first-party developer Bungie. The extraction shooter from the Halo and Destiny studio has since gone through some rough patches, including a major delay, since then, but now, it finally has a new release date.
Marathon is hitting PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 on March 5, 2026. Pre-orders have been opened up across all platforms. As previously announced, the standard edition of the game comes in at $39.99, following in the same footsteps of the hit extraction shooter Arc Raiders. This is accompanied by a Deluxe edition that will set fans back $59.99, which comes with additional premium cosmetics and a free battle pass tier unlock.
Those who pre-order the game will also receive various cosmetic rewards, including a weapon skin for a sidearm, a weapon charm, and a sticker, alongside profile backgrounds and emblems. Even attaching Marathon to a Bungie account that has Destiny 2 gives players extra cosmetic rewards.
The studio also unveiled a physical Collector's Edition being sold via its own store. Coming in at $229.99, it carries a statue, collectible patches, postcards, and several digital rewards. Check it out in detail in the video below:
The first-person shooter experience has players jumping into open matches in search of loot on the planet Tau Ceti IV in the year 2893. During these expeditions, squads can run into other players, kicking off battles involving both firearms and character powers. Being taken out means all collected loot and weaponry drops for others to take. Safely extracting from specific points on the map is the only method of taking back all the loot and equipment to the player's safe stash, which can then be used in future matchups.
2025 was a tough year for Bungie. Following its first gameplay reveal, Marathon was hit by art plagiarism claims, which the studio admitted to. Weeks later, Bungie delayed the game without a new release date after saying it had received "passionate feedback" from the community.
In August, CEO and Studio Head Pete Parsons stepped down from his roles after 23 years at Bungie. Meanwhile, Sony said in an earnings report recently that its purchase of Bungie for $3.6 billion hasn't gone too well for the company. We will have to wait and see how Marathon performs in the live service front when it comes out in March.
