Teams using Azure Private Link and Geo-backups see major improvements in the latest January stability update for MySQL Flexible Servers.

Microsoft has announced that all new servers running Azure Database for MySQL (Flexible Server) will be automatically onboarded to the January 2026 update from today. For existing servers, the update will also be applied during their next scheduled maintenance. With this update, Microsoft is kicking off the year with a focus on stability, rather than new features.

In its release notes, the Redmond Giant said that there are no new engine versions or features in this release. The focus is all on security patches and fixing bugs in high-priority infrastructure areas instead.

One of the fixes is related to disaster recovery. Before being fixed, the bug caused GTID reset operations to fail when enabling Geo-backups. This fix ensures more reliable cross-region recovery. Microsoft also resolved an issue that prevented certain High Availability (HA) servers from enabling Private Endpoints when behind a Dedicated Service Load Balancer.

The company also improved troubleshooting by creating better error messages when users try to enable High Availability on VNET-based instances that still have Accelerated Logs active.

Here are the full release notes:

Engine version changes

  • There will be no engine version changes in this version.

Features

  • No new features are being introduced in this version.

Improvement

  • Improved the error message shown when customers attempt to enable HA on a VNET-based instance that still has Accelerated Logs enabled

Known issues fixes

  • Fixed an issue where enabling geo backup caused subsequent GTID reset operations to fail
  • Fixed an issue where certain HA servers behind a dedicated SLB could not enable a private endpoint

If you want these changes immediately, rather than waiting for your server’s next scheduled maintenance, you can enroll in the Virtual Canary Program to upgrade ahead of schedule.

While this update is pretty quiet in terms of engine upgrades and new features, it's still a vital update aimed at removing roadblocks for teams using Azure Private Link for security and Geo-redundancy for disaster recovery. If your organization is strict about uptime and security requirements, these fixes will help to ensure your networking and backup configurations don’t conflict with each other.
