Spotify is expanding its catalog of spoken-word audio for users to listen to on its platform with a new "narrated Articles" feature, drawing from a myriad of sources, including Rolling Stone, Vogue, WIRED, GQ, Variety, Pitchfork, and, of course, its own in-house team.

The audio-streaming giant promised to provide "over 650 long-form" articles in English, with each recording lasting under two hours long. Premium users get access to these narrated pieces as part of their existing monthly audiobook hours allowance, while individual users who do not subscribe to Premium can purchase individual articles for $1.99 each.

Colleen Prendergast, Licensing Lead at Spotify Audiobooks, called the curated audio format "a natural extension of music" and said, "by bringing shorter form content into the mix, we are meeting audiences where they are to help build healthy listening habits." The company hopes that these shorter, accessible audio files will ease listeners into consuming full-length audiobooks.

Narrated articles is just one of the many features Spotify has shipped in the last few weeks. Earlier this month, the company introduced "Save to Spotify", a Go-based CLI tool that allows automated AI agents to generate and upload custom audio files directly to its platform.

While the platform actively encourages personal AI experimentation through the Save to Spotify tool, it's also launched a verification system to protect the service from low-quality "AI Slop." Under this verification framework, legitimate creators receive a green checkmark badge to assure listeners of their authenticity, while any automated accounts that impersonate real people without permission are banned.

To help creators reach wider audiences, Spotify is working with Apple to bring the Cupertino giant's HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) technology to Megaphone and Spotify for Creators. This integration allows video podcast creators who host their content natively on Spotify to distribute their video episodes directly to Apple Podcasts without changing their publishing workflows. Creators can now access a wider base of listeners across different mobile systems while maintaining their existing monetization settings.
