Steven Posted March 23, 2004 Share Posted March 23, 2004 ntel's LGA socket 775 nightmare CeBIT 2004 CPU killer By Fuad Abazovic in Hannover: Monday 22 March 2004, 09:23 INTEL HAS BEEN having its fair share of problems lately and the last thing it needs is that its new pinless socket or future chips is actually not as robust a solution as it seemed before, as we reported earlier from CeBIT. Motherboard vendors we talked to told us that if you replace your CPU few times, you are either going to kill the CPU or the socket. Intel removed the pins from the CPU but you still have some sort of pins in the socket now. We pictured the socket here. Foxconn did a design of this socket, obviously following Intel specs, since they are a contracting manufacturer. The concept is that you place CPU in the socket and lock it with a retention mechanism but, apparently, the mechanism is very breakable. This won't help motherboard vendors but we are confident that Intel is going to fix this very soon. You should see the size of coolers that sit on these 775 CPUs locked in the retention mechanism, they are enormous and get very hot, since we tried it with our fingers as sensors.
