FBI wants backdoor in MSN Messenger

Recommended Posts

ISPs ? They don't need to contact your ISP at any purpose... IF THIS HAPPENS, then as long as you are using Microsoft's server, then that's all they need

What I don't understand is... How can a local organization like the FBI who is restricted only to America be able to spy on conversation Worldwide !?

Nope, as soon as a connection is established between 2 peers, the MSN server is no longer needed as the conduit for the conversation, if you get my drift.

It bothers me that the FBI wants to have control over everything. MSN Conversations, Emails, Xbox Live, VoIP, What the hell are they thinking?

I think in this case the law applies similarly to wiretapping laws. They'd need to get a court order to lawfully monitor your connection. The problem though is that if you look at the FBI files being declassifed only recently, they had files on tons of people celebrities, future politicians etc. Quite troubling. To what extent is this still going on?

The loophole is with international communication. The NSA and FBI legally can't tap a domestic bound communication. Once it crosses international boundaries, e.g. US to Europe, then the NSA, interpol, etc CAN tap it. And in the US - if need be - CSIS (Canadian Intelligence) can lawfully tap the communication. They can get a court order from there IMO.

Dessimat0r > law enforcement could ultimately tap an internet connection and analyse all the data if need be. Forget the protocol or method used.

Civil rights and free speech should be protected. But free speech does not protect people from expressing civil disobediance and things which are illegal. Just something to think about.

Well think about it, FBI / NSA etc etc monitored phone communications for years, straight out of the Enemy of the State movies, i mean sure movies stretch the truth slightly but they werent far wrong.

The thing is they acted above the law, not with it. So assuming taht, i'd say its arleady happening, buts its used for intelligence not evidence, because as evidences its useless, as intelligence its a powerful tool to use.

So i personally think its already being done.

With FBI requesting msn messenger to be tapped etc, hah probabaly already is :) i mean hell this is just them trying to make it "publically legitimate" so taht they can do it with out the high level of secracy. I mean hell they tapepd fones for years without telling anybody then inserted it in as part hte privacy policy etc etc however one side affect was taht they need a warrant etc. So really its just the same event repeating itself.

MEh im jsut rambling but hey its all very interesting. :shifty:

timdorr, i am sorry to say this your wrong,

like the people in america have a say in, cause bollocks they hardly get a say in much the same in every other country. sure you can go face to face with a someone like bush or kerry but remember they will just make u look yay small when they start talking and just some people to escort you out of there face.

well since face to face ain't going to work let try people of USA vs The goverment, goverment will win.

so face it you can't do f' about it, getting groups together and have rallys and signing petitions are gunna do f' all.

And you know this how? Your profile says you live in the UK. You have no perspective. Have you even tried to contact your elected official ever?

Even though im from Aussy and dont udnerstand the American government etc that well. I'm so sure that tehre is the government, cia etc and all operate at various levels of the law, and it will always work that way, there is no way for us to know 100% of whats going on, but alot of guessing can be made, and 10 bucks some of those guesses are almost rite, its the way it goes, what we think can happen probabaly is.

IF the people were totally against something and teh government did it, cant do f** ? i dont think so, boycott whatever it is the goverment changed, wether legally or ilegally, if they put a tap on msn messenger, and people were taht against it, that feature uninstall / delete comes in handy. I mean hell are other options. ANd if those options were "removed" its caleld underground. :) haha

I lovve ramblliiing!

ok well alot of you dont live in the US and never have, so before you start making dumb comments, maybe you should find out more info on what you all hate so much. yeah i know our privacy and our freedoms are slowy being taken away but thats why we need to fight to keep them.

government is an intricate thing. everything happens because something else happened. chain reactions if you will. so there are reasons why certains are being done (some are going to far though).

EVERY country has done something very stupid in the past so dont keep bashing on the US because take a look in your history and see all the wonderful things your country has done

(sorry if some of this is a little  i'm getting tired)

yeh for sure mate! I think the onyl way a country develops is to make mistakesand learn from it i mean hell if teh concept applies to growing up as an individual it shud apply to a body of people. :)

Mmm i have nothing to hide i just dont want in the case of phone tappaings, being lsitened to, and msn tappings, being watched. Besides the fact it limits how u can express you opinions between one anotehr, cause tahts how it works, u mention bomb and terrosits in a sentence they will look at it for a brief second if they had full uninhibitied access. U say smuggle and weapons they wud know about it. Its teh fact i cant say anything with out thinking twice which wud bother me hte most.

first i was actually born in new york but moved back to london, where my parents were from, when i was 1.

now let's think of great stuff the americans have done . . . vietnam, korea, suffocated many developing countries by stealing their workforce and then taking the revenue away from the people, el salvador, grenada, destabilised modern-day iran and iraq . . .

Protests aren't what I'm talking about. What I'm talking about is calling up your representative and getting in their face about the issues. It's seriously as easy as picking up the phone and giving them a call. But if you really want to get into it, you can visit them at your respective capitol. It's called lobbying; learn it and love it, because it's the most direct way to get what you want from your government.

Meh......I just have no faith left in democracy......but then again I am in Oz, so all's sorta good

No way, this is insane! Haven't they learned anything over the past few years? I think some "genius" hacker would find out and then use this... no, don't like this proposal at all.

btw. who's the FCC?

Good call! I'm no that worried though. Some other genious will figure out how to close the back door just the same as Justin was able to replace the ads in AIM with AVS visualations :)

skype isnt an american program right?

so they dont have to do it.

sure. the fbi can make downloading skype illeagal. or can they? can u make installing a certain software on your computer illeagel :ninja:

Skype is beeing developed in the United Kingdom and the project is led by Kazaa's founder, Niklas Zennstr?m from Sweden.

I don't think that Niklas Zennstr?m would comply with anything involving this kind of activity.

He want's to stay out of trouble. So if they forced him then he would move or even sell the project, like he did with Kazaa.

this is wrong.. just wrong... FBI has lost it ..

o well peeps will stop using msn then :)

People arent going to stop using MSN just like that. It wouldnt be such a bad thing either for MS if they did becuase its free microsoft would save a fortune.

    • @goretsky I will keep those in mind for the calls we get and update our technicians with the list, im sure the list will grow and I hope there is a larger public statement on this.  Here is the statement from Huntress https://www.huntress.com/blog/klue-breach-investigation
    • But we are talking about Elon Musk, no AT&T... I know big companies are evil, but Elon and his companies are in another level which is much more dangerous.
    • New PowerToys update fixes memory leaks and other issues by Taras Buria Another bug-fixing update is available for PowerToys version 0.100. After releasing version 0.100.1 with a bunch of bug fixes and patches, Microsoft pushed version 0.100.2 to address two important issues with one of Command Palette Dock's features. With PowerToys 0.100.2, Microsoft fixed the performance meter displaying incorrect values and memory leaks, which are particularly unwanted things in the current situation with overpriced PC hardware. Here is the changelog: Reverted a Performance Monitor dock refresh change that forced item refreshes on every metric update Fixed a memory leak in the Performance Monitor dock extension by reusing stable network upload/download band items instead of creating new list items on each refresh For those unfamiliar, Command Palette Dock is a relatively new addition to PowerToys. It is a taskbar-like tool that you can keep on top of the screen to pin various useful widgets, commands, and more. It can display time, weather, your PC's performance metrics, and more. Microsoft introduced the Command Palette Dock in March 2026 in PowerToys 0.98. Microsoft has dedicated documentation for Command Palette Dock, and you can check it out on the official Microsoft Learn website. You can update PowerToys to the latest version by going to Settings > General and clicking "Check for updates." Alternatively, you can download the installer from GitHub using this link. In other news, Microsoft is working on a new window-management utility for PowerToys. Called Alt Window Cycle, it will let you use the Alt + ` shortcut to switch between different windows in a single app. You can learn more about the tool here.
