Again, whose fault is that? The author is too lazy to make his site compatible with standards, that's his fault. And as AT pointed out, only about 80% of people use IE nowadays, and that number is constantly falling. 20% of internet users is no small amount.

Firefox only accounts for about 14% of Neowin's traffic. Microsoft represents greater than 80% of our traffic with the rest taken up by Opera or whatever else. Okay some of those Opera users might identify as IE.

The point is that we are a tech site and are users are more likely to try the "new" thing. I'd expect that Firefox represent a heck of a lot less than 14% of all internet surfers.

W3C may be the official standard but MSIE is the de facto standard. I'd expect that the majority of web designers care about the latter more than they care about the former.

Like it or not, IE is the standard, get used to it. If the site doesn't work, it's very unlikely that the author is going to care about the 1 or 2% that don't use IE.

we shouldn't have to get used to it :( - it is activly promoting sloppy code, microsofts share IS falling, just slowly :( - what we really need is a new version of IE which complies to the standards, eventually everyone will have that and the problem will be solved!

It really confuses me, microsoft have thousands of employees, yet they cant spare a couple of them to work on a version of IE which complies with the standards?!

The Third Group will stare at the screen with a dumb founded look and say ?Firefox?? What?s that? Only to open the review and still have no idea what the heck it is.

Dumb founded - as if struck with astonishment and surprise

"a circle of policement stood dumbfounded by her denial of having seem the accident"

"the flabbergasted aldermen were speechless"

"was thunderstruck by the news of his promotion"

I never called people who didn't know what firefox was dumb... you are the one calling them that

Doesn't have all the features of IE!!

It doesn't have save to *.mht format or anything similar.

Also for those of you who think that the following is a speed tweak,

pref("nglayout.initialpaint.delay", 0);

how about trying,

pref("nglayout.initialpaint.delay", 1000);

for those on a slower computer, less cpu usage and displays the page after a second and therefore most of the page has been downloaded before displaying it.

Increase the number to 5000 for 5 secs, is also good for slow CPUs. Don't worry about the 5 seconds, if the page has already downloaded because of your broadband (?) connection, it won't wait the 5 secs for display, it will display it earlier.

:)

heck I bet ? of you even use Internet Explorer.

I doubt the people in this community are that stupid to not value their privacy, and above all security.

they wouldn’t even be able towhipe> their own butt. (no offence to people who can’twhipe> their own butt).

It's WIPE you ********.

Firefox is IE on crack because it has all the features of IE and so much more.

Someone else mentioned it's missing mht, but if he actually looked at an mht source,

he'd probably die of a heart attack, use the option "save with images" buddy, that gets everything.

Firefox runs off its own Engine called the Gecko Engine.

It's a standalone engine used in Mozilla, it's not Firefox's own.

Half of this is in part from the fact that when a page loads it concentrates more on the text than the pictures, so text first pictures second.

Opera has this nifty 'g' key or toolbar icon which toggles images from off -> cached only -> all images and loads text first also, not to mention it opens more connections to a server if required to download those images as fast as possible. (Firefox comes with 2 connections out of the box I believe, and opera 4-8 (and up to 128).

Are you excited yet? No? …. Blah your no fun!

Yes, i'm getting annoyed.

Upon opening Firefox you’ll notice it looks quite a bit different than IE. The toolbar isn’t as filled up but the address bar looks the same.

Some people actually like big chunky toolbars, which opera comes out of the box with, if you don't like it, it's a matter of dragging about two icons to the address bar and disabling the main bar.

What happened to all the? porn sites I had in my IE favorites ?

I don't even want to comment on this, go back to your porn sites and leave neowin's quality reviews alone.

When ever you browsed the net with IE did you ever get pop-ups? Oh you just used the Google toolbar? Well that’s cool, but what is neat about Firefox is that popup blocking is built in and there is no need to install something it already comes pre installed. Sure you could always get something a little better but the one it comes with gets the job done.

Yes, Opera does too, and offers more options, such as 'open requested popup windows only'. However, none of the browsers (or extentions) can yet defeat ads like these: http://www.adoutput.com/example3.cfm , I've only found one program which can do that. Ad Muncher.

Another feature that people like is tabs. Have you ever had your taskbar filled with Different Internet Explorer windows?

Haven't heard of Windows XP?

Well Tabs allow you to have multiple websites open in a single browser and use your mouse to switch between them.? By default the tab support is pretty good but by downloading an Extension you can make it a whole lot better.

I'm a poweruser, room for 4 readable tabs only is insanity, the Tabs Extention is useless in firefox and only works properly in Mozilla itself, but nothing does it as sleekly as opera natively.

30 tabs, down the side of my screen, absolutely no worries, oh and it saves the ******s too (along with a backup file) if the browser crashes.

A who what?? Oh an extension is something you can download which adds extra functionality to the browser.

Okay, you got me here, Opera doesn't have extentions, but it comes with goddam everything that a power-user could want out of the box, except for a Web Developer Toolbar (yes, i admit Mozilla [Firefox] has it's uses)

What that means is that when your download gets cut off again at 40 megs, you should then be able to resume it and start from were you left off.

What that means, is in case you haven't read the release notes, that this is currently a buggy feature, in development and doesn't work at all. Opera on the other hand has had this for quite some time, and saves the downloads even if the browser crashes. oh, an IE actually resumes too, you just aren't smart enough to realise it.

This is called “Themes”. They also have a website just for those too, imagine that.

haha, yeah, and most users have such difficulty with something as simple as skinning, Opera's had native and user skins for donkey's years, and it as a site too, imagine that, my.opera.com

Also gives you the option to Add / Remove or just move around the icons or search bars on your tool bar. This can be done by right clicking on the toolbar and choosing customize. A neat little box will drop down and you can either drag from the toolbar onto that new box or drag stuff off the box and put it on the toolbar. Either way it gives you a lot of customization flexibility.

Yeah right, that's why the tab bar is locked, the status bar is locked to the bottom of the screen, and i can't f***ink rearrange anything, except delete or add a few pretty icons.

Opera is all about full customisation, you can delete every goddam toolbar, stick them wherever you want, or even run your whole browser off your address bar, how's that for minimalism?

What this means is that if a site was visited with Firefox that contained code to get througwhole that was specific to IE, Firefox would not be at risk.

It's HOLE. (hello, editors?)

There are a few sites that contain ways to run stuff on your computer via Firefox and in time there will be more but for now they still feel that the IE market is the way to go, because frankly more users are there.

hah. Please, that's like saying security through obscurity, all software has it's weaknesses, but Mozilla [Firefox] and Opera are definitely safer than IE atm.

There are still many more features to explore which is why you should download it play with it for yourself.

all i have to say: screw Opera, FF is way better........and yes someone seems little angry......in fact if i have to make a choice between opera and IE, i choose IE.......and yes i try opera and i really dont like it!

I said, don't take my word that Opera is better, actually have a look and see for yourself,

sites like this will open your understanding. http://www.literarymoose.info/=/css.xhtml

No, you said that IE was better than Opera,

have you not heard of CSS2.1, CSS3 and XHTML?

If indeed you do actually hate it, and don't just enjoy using the word "hate", with no real power behind it,

would you mind sharing with the neowin community what you particularly hate?

Hey when is Fx 0.9 coming out?

I think it's overdue or it's due out at the end of this month,

something like that, If I find the site with the dates I'll post it.

MHT source, do you mean Firefox source code for it? Also I know about save with images.

Anyway why do you think I mentioned *.mht or something like that, because some of us want the entire page download to be wrapped up in a single file, rather than a file + folder.

Mr Mialo: yes, but people like you are insane, *.mht is a proprietry format, supported only by IE, and wont' be portable to any system in the foreseeable future (unless you like keeping old boxen in your basement), on the other hand, the humble folder and file system isn't going anywhere for a while :)

    • An actual cosmic "Eye of Sauron" had been looking straight at us all along by Sayan Sen Image by Kovin P. Vasquez via Pexels | Not representative An international team of researchers has solved a long-standing mystery surrounding a distant blazar known as PKS 1424+240, helping explain why it produces some of the brightest high-energy gamma rays and cosmic neutrinos ever observed despite appearing to have a relatively slow-moving jet. The findings were published on June 6 in Astronomy & Astrophysics Letters. The study addresses a broader challenge in astrophysics: understanding how extreme cosmic objects accelerate particles to very high energies and produce very high-energy (VHE) photons and neutrinos. PKS 1424+240 is located billions of light-years from Earth. It has attracted attention for years because it is both a powerful source of VHE gamma rays and the brightest known neutrino-emitting blazar in the sky, according to observations by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. It is also associated with one of the strongest peaks in IceCube's nine-year neutrino sky map A blazar is a type of active galactic nucleus powered by a supermassive black hole that pulls in surrounding matter and launches jets of plasma moving close to the speed of light. What makes blazars unique is their orientation. One of their jets points almost directly toward Earth, making them appear exceptionally bright across the electromagnetic spectrum and allowing scientists to study some of the most extreme physical processes in the Universe. The scientists exclaimed it's like the 'Eye of Sauron' in deep space. Usually, the brightest gamma-ray-emitting blazars are expected to have jets that appear to move very quickly. However, radio observations of PKS 1424+240 suggested that its jet was moving much more slowly, creating a contradiction that became part of a long-running problem known as the "Doppler factor crisis." To investigate, researchers analyzed 15 years of observations from the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), a network of 10 radio antennas spread across the continental United States, Hawaii and St. Croix. Using a technique called Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), astronomers combine signals from widely separated radio telescopes to create a virtual Earth-sized telescope capable of revealing extremely fine details. The team combined 42 polarization-sensitive radio images collected between 2009 and 2025, creating a much deeper and more detailed view of the jet than had previously been possible. The observations were carried out as part of MOJAVE (Monitoring Of Jets in Active galactic nuclei with VLBA Experiments), a long-running program that studies the brightness, polarization and magnetic field structures of jets produced by active galaxies. The project aims to better understand how activity near supermassive black holes is linked to high-energy radiation and neutrino emission. “When we reconstructed the image, it looked absolutely stunning,” said Yuri Kovalev, lead author of the study and Principal Investigator of the European Research Council-funded MuSES project at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy. “We have never seen anything quite like it — a near-perfect toroidal magnetic field with a jet, pointing straight at us.” The image revealed an unusual geometry. The researchers found that Earth lies almost directly in line with the jet, with a viewing angle of less than 0.6 degrees. In simple terms, astronomers are looking almost straight down the jet. This turned out to be the key to the mystery. Because the jet is aimed almost directly at Earth, a relativistic effect called Doppler boosting dramatically increases its apparent brightness. The study found that this effect boosts the emission by a factor of about 30 while also making the jet appear slower than it actually is. “This alignment causes a boost in brightness by a factor of 30 or more,” said Jack Livingston, a co-author at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy. “At the same time, the jet appears to move slowly due to projection effects — a classic optical illusion.” The nearly head-on view also gave scientists a rare look at the jet's magnetic field. Using polarized radio signals, they detected a clear toroidal, or doughnut-shaped, magnetic field component. The observations suggest the jet carries an electric current and that its magnetic field helps launch, shape and stabilize the flow of plasma. Researchers believe this magnetic structure may also play a key role in accelerating particles to energies high enough to produce both gamma rays and neutrinos. “Solving this puzzle confirms that active galactic nuclei with supermassive black holes are not only powerful accelerators of electrons, but also of protons — the origin of the observed high-energy neutrinos,” Kovalev said. The research was conducted under the MuSES (Multi-messenger Studies of Energetic Sources) project, which investigates how active galactic nuclei accelerate particles and generate different cosmic signals, including light and neutrinos. Scientists say understanding how protons are accelerated and linked to neutrino production remains one of the major unanswered questions in astrophysics. The findings help explain why some blazars can appear to have slow jets while still producing extremely bright high-energy emissions. More broadly, the study strengthens the link between relativistic jets, magnetic fields, gamma rays and high-energy neutrinos. Researchers say the results provide new clues about how some of the Universe's most powerful natural particle accelerators work and offer important insights for multimessenger astronomy, which combines different types of cosmic signals to study extreme events in space.
