the tap-win32 connection in xp has an ip as 192.168.0.1 is that right?

-bolero

at default yea, I had to change mine because it was conflicting with something else on my network

Generally, remember that (these are assumptions that I've made from my experience today, some may not be true in every case)

1. Your Tap-win32 adapter's IP# is what OS X's "Router" should be set to

2. It has been narrowed down what OS X's DNS should actually be set to, I used those three values because they're generally router values, and they ended up working for me

3. I believe OS X's "IP Address" can be set to anything, as long as the first 3 parts of the number are the same as the first three parts of your "Router (in OSX)"/Your Tap-win32 adapter

4. Your router can't be set to 192.168.0.1. This interferes with the Tap-win32's default address OR Internet Connection Sharing (not sure yet). Try 192.168.1.1

If all else fails...Try using DHCP :p

i ahve tried DHCP, but it gives me a huugge wakced up ip address, and the network setting say in mac osx that it hs a set-assigned Ip address and the net may not work wit ha yellow caution sign

is there even a way to be sure that the internet connection sharing is working correctly between the main connection and the tap-win32 one?

go to start > run > cmd

type ipconfig

paste what you get there here (If it shows your internet IP address, you can edit that out)

i have nothing in my "network connections" labeled anything like "internet connection". i do have my "local area connections". so is there some other way to enable internet sharing without "internet connections" or is there a way to get it back. as far as i know, i've never had it during this install (about 1.2 months old). any help would be great.

Okay, in OS X try:

IP Address: 192.168.0.2

Subnet: 255.255.255.0

Router: 192.168.0.1

DNS (Use both these values): 24.150.160.1

24.---.--.-- (Your Internet IP#)

this is what i see:

Make sure the Internet Connection Firewall / Internet Connection Sharing service is on, and double check the ICS on the nForce onboard adapter.

@viciousX: darrnn  i typed everything in and nothing worked i still get "unknown host" in safari when loading the page

I'm out of ideas :(

You're completely sure ICS is enabled?

Try adding 192.168.0.1 and scwe3.on.cogeco.ca to your DNS list, just for kicks

OK i tried loading this, and it says:

[TAP-WIN32]: Enumerating TAP devices...
[TAP-WIN32]: Could not locate any installed TAP-WIN32 devices.
[IO/rtl8139] <Error> Open enetif failed: Operation not permitted

So this means I have to have a RealTek RTL8139 installed in my PC, correct? I have a few stored away in a box. Shall I install it?

    • NVIDIA officially supports Ubuntu, as linked above with the GeForce NOW Hands on I did in collaboration with Paul Hill.
    • TO be clear I am not running linux today, however I keep thinking about it. And I want to make sure there are minimal obstacles if I decide to make that switch in the coming months.
    • Yes, I actually glossed over the Linux part from the OP. You could always go for a 9070 XT and if you really want to play Ray Traced games in the future, GeForce Now is pretty damn good on Linux https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidias-native-geforce-now-app-for-linux-bridges-the-gaming-gap-hands-on/
    • One reason it might be running hotter is dust build up within the cooling or perhaps the paste has dried out. You could always try repasting your old GPU and cleaning the cooler. Your experience in Linux will be much better with an AMD GPU; the performance in gaming is much closer to Windows than nVidia would be. I personally think on Windows, AMD drivers are junk.
    • I reviewed it back in March, but I didn't have a 5070 at the time https://www.neowin.net/reviews/amd-rx-9070-review-vs-rtx-5070-4070-and-rx-9070-xt-7800-xt--just-good-enough/ When I reviewed the 9070 I did have a 5070 to compare it against, so the scores are there for the 9070 XT. it outperforms the 5070 in raster, and is barely neck and neck in Ray Tracing. So it's better than a 5070 in everything but Ray Tracing where it is neck and neck, or just under. To be honest, the uplift from 3080 when it was new to the 9070 XT is not as great a step up. If you can find a used 4080 Super for around the same money, you would probably be better off, but if you only want to buy new then the 16GB 9070 XT is the best value for money in its category.
