Running Mac OS X on x86 PC!

Question

I am pretty sure he's not worrying too much.

This surely isn't a true solution to running OS X on an x86 cpu. In order for it to be a true solution it would need to be able to be duel booted with XP or win2k.  I doubt that it would become mainstream if it could only be run in a virtual world on top of another runnning OS.

Besides...most people buy macs not only for the OS...but also because of the pc design.

I'm sure he's happy about all the free publicity. Besides, everyone knows Apple has had a secret x86 version developed already. ;)

Also, if you're going to emulate OS X, you should probably get this G5 clone PC case (Lian-Li V-1000):

v-1000S.jpg

Could mod a G5 case too I suppose, but that would be a hassle.

And what exactly will apple do? If you know anything about emulation history you should be fully aware the courts have consistantly ruled (in most western nations) that emulators are perfectly legal unless they are directly including copyrighted code.

So unless apple can prove this emulator is composed of code they have written they don't have a legal leg to stand on.

Aditionally, emulators exist for a variety of consoles. (and even other computer systems) I have yet to see any evidence that they have damaged the company that produces the hardware in any way. In fact, it could actually HELP in some cases. Take the Xbox for instance. At times the Xbox is costing them more to make than what they are selling it for. Like Sony and Nintendo the REAL money comes from SOFTWARE sales NOT hardware.

Personally I enjoy using emulators for my playstation 1 games especially as I am final fantasy fan. Get your self final fantasy 8 and run it on a playstation one. Then run it on the latest epsxe with Pete's latest GPU. Graphics are FAR FAR enhanced over the PS1. You have to see it to believe it.

Anyway, I see nothing wrong with running software on different hardware so long as you have bought the software.

By the way - even *IF* apple complained about this - does anyone remember when Apple themselves released software to run Windows (or windows apps) way back when and included it with their systems? Talk about the pot calling the kettle black... Even Microsoft didn't have the balls to challenge them on that. I would love to see that little fact brought up in court.

And one of the best known (none other than Basilisk II) has been emulating 68K Macs for quite a while (in fact, using the current Win32 version, which hasn't been updated for years, I've emulated Quadras that have *never* existed in reality, such as a 384 MB Quadra 900...and this was using a mere 1 GHz Intel P-III).

I commonly used B-II for MacOS troubleshooting issues commonplace on 68K Macs (and will likely use PearPC, when finely tuned, to do the same with regards to PPC Mac/OS X-unique software issues). That's my biggest single use for OSes *other* than Windows XP (which is my day-to-day OS): troubleshooting atypical issues on atypical software that PC users usually don't see.

It's why I've kept up with Solaris, for example.

The HyperThreaded Emulated Mac?

Here's the situation:

I have a 512 MB P4 2.6 (HT) running (currently) Windows XP SP1 and Longhorn 4074 in a dual-boot setup.

Fortunately, because PearPC configures similar to Basilisk II (which I have used) I should be able to use the JITC Win32 version tagteamed with PearPeeler.

I have more than enough space on the XP partition to devote to a fake PPC Mac.

I *do* however, apparently need some hard numbers:

1. hex size for 256 MB of RAM (devoted to the fake Mac)

2. Preferred version of OS X (10.2 or 10.3? I have access to both).

This would be a *no Darwin* attempt.

Can PearPC do Ethernet? If so, does it rely on emulation (ala Basilisk II)? I'm connected on the XP side via Ethernet to a router (the router supports DHCP); if either PearPC or PearPeeler supports NAT, then I have no reason to sweat (because OS X supports DHCP).

Nertz...getting a "can't open video.x" error in PearPC 0.1.1.

I have an AIW 9700 Pro with a desktop res of 1280x1024x32bpp. All settings are at the defaults.

What would cause this error? I do *not* have WindowBlinds loaded.

make sure that the file video.x is in the PearPC directory.

make sure that the file video.x is in the PearPC directory.

Prob licked!

I specified the full path to all targets to get them working (PearPC is in, appropriately, C:\FRUIT)

Question: How long does it take to detect the hard drive image? (I would think it might take a while; however, nobody has reported the typical locate time.)

The install is running in the BG as I type this, and I'm letting it run overnight.

Here goes.....

The bear *dances*....

Panther (OS X 10.3) is installing as I type this...in the background...on my Genuine Intel XP-driven *no WAY is this a Mac*!

I cranked up the PearPC window to 1024x768x32bpp (my desktop is 1280x1024x32bpp) and lowered the screen redraw to a mere 45 ms.

The biggest single question is: because PearPC has no Ethernet, is there *any* way to copy real Mac apps (other than via creating ISO images) to my handy-dandy not-a-Mac?

I'm thinking more of simple applets, browsers, that sort of thing.

Also, is the networking being worked on?

ok, i've made progress, i finally got to the screen with the grey apple, but then i get this message:

You are now in single-user mode while booted from a CD-ROM.

Since the root disk is read-only, some commands may not work as

they normally do. In particular, commands that try to create

files in /tmp will probably fail. One way to avoid this problem

is to mount a seperate hard disk or floppy on /tmp using the

mount command. For example, 'sbin/mount /dev/fd0a /tmp' puts

/tmp on the internal floppy disk.

sh-2.05a#

in other words, how do i mount the hard drive?

in other words, how do i mount the hard drive?

sh-2.05a# Pdisk

then

sh-2.05a# type "e"

when it prompts for the device? type "/DEV/Disk0"

r - Will remap the drives.....

w - Will Write the new partition table......

For example: My Map partition was in part #1 and my Apple partition was in part #3 . Part #2 had Free space. So what i did was as follows:

sh-2.05a# r

Partition Number? I selected was "3"

New Partition ? Then "2"

sh-2.05a# w --- writes my changes and then i restared pearpc and it worked.

REM: remove "-s" from prom_env_machargs = "-s" in order to continue

hope this helps a little if not im sorry

Has anyone found a way to get anything OFF the virtual mac? On windows that is... I have been trying to find a way to mount the HD image in windows with out any luck, and I haven't found a way to make an image that is recognized by Pearpc and windows both.

Anybody have any bright ideas? Thanks,

Jon

(should fix "mac os crashes when idle")

- numpad keys mapped

- (Win32) fixed: "'" key wasn't mapped

- (Win32) fixed: F8 key wasn't mapped

- (Win32) fixed: crash when unknown keys in F11 mode pressed

- 3c90x: added MII support, some bugs fixed

Wow. This will be nice if it's real :)

It's real, alright.

Lots of screenies (including mine on page 75 of this thread).

That's the *real OS X* (Panther/OS X 10.3, no less) running in *Windows XP*.

(still shaking head, getting used to the weirdity of *OS X for Windows*)

    • OpenAI is now rolling out Lockdown Mode to more ChatGPT users by Pradeep Viswanathan Back in February, OpenAI first announced Lockdown Mode for users who want the most comprehensive protection from potential attacks. At the time of the announcement, the company mentioned that this feature was available to a small set of highly security-conscious users, including executives or security teams at leading organizations. Today, OpenAI announced that Lockdown Mode is now rolling out to all personal ChatGPT accounts, including Free, Go, Plus, and Pro, and also self-serve ChatGPT Business accounts. Users can enable the feature from ChatGPT Settings > Security when it is available for their account. When Lockdown Mode is enabled, ChatGPT limits or disables several features that connect to the web or external services. These include live web browsing, Deep Research, Agent Mode, and more. Here is the complete list of services that will be disabled in Lockdown Mode: Live web browsing: Web browsing is limited to accessing only cached content. Search results may be limited, unavailable, or stale. Image support: ChatGPT may not display images in regular responses or retrieve images from the web. Users can still upload image files, and image generation remains available where it is otherwise available. Deep research: Deep research is disabled. Agent mode: Agent mode is disabled. Canvas networking: Users cannot approve Canvas-generated code to access the network. File downloads: ChatGPT cannot download files for data analysis. ChatGPT can still operate on your manually uploaded files. It is important to note that Lockdown Mode does not completely block prompt injections from appearing in content that ChatGPT processes. For example, a malicious instruction could still be present in an uploaded file or cached web content. However, the mode is designed to reduce the ways such an attack could send sensitive information outside the conversation. Along with Lockdown Mode, OpenAI today also announced that the Active sessions feature is now available across ChatGPT accounts and workspace types. This feature allows users to review where their account is signed in across devices and end sessions if required. A session will have the following information displayed: Device or browser information. First-party app context, such as ChatGPT, Codex, or API Platform. Approximate location. Sign-in date and time. Whether the device is a trusted device. Whether it is your current session. OpenAI highlighted that the Active sessions feature will not be available for accounts linked to an organization’s single sign-on setup, including SAML or OIDC.
    • with LSTC and ESU, moving to w11 or linux because w10 suddenly will not work when in reality it works and its a better choice, of course there are also developers that only test in 11 or force you to have TPM and Secure boot for the sake of "better security" in games. or most likely people is buying new PC that only ship with 11
    • with LTSC and ESU there are still viable as a stable platform not that they care and let people deal with w11 crashing and burning every month support mean shet if the platform is trash
    • Most boring game ever. Repetitive, empty, predictable, and full of cliches. Total waste of time and money, IMO.
    • Mafia: The Old Country expansion Man of Honor announced, brings back Salieri from original by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe During Summer Game Fest, 2K and Hanger 13 brought out a new Mafia: The Old Country trailer, revealing the game's first expansion. Named Man of Honor, this is slated to add two new chapters to the Enzo storyline that the game follows. There is an iconic character returning to the series with this expansion, with players set to run into Ennio Salieri, the future Don of the Salieri crime family. Fans of the original Mafia, or its Definitive Edition remake, may remember that name as one of the biggest characters in the storyline. This expansion is set prior to his rise to being the kingpin in the City of Lost Heaven. "Set in Sicily during the winter of 1905, Enzo Favara has proven himself a reliable soldier of the Torrisi crime family in the months since his initiation," says the studio about the new chapters. "Now, the Don entrusts him and Cesare with a delicate assignment of assisting Ennio Salieri, a man of honor recently released from prison and intent on reclaiming what is his." Working at Salieri's side, players will be heading into fresh environments as they return to the role of Enzo as a high-ranking soldato. The studio also promises brand-new weapons, fresh vehicles, and charms to collect in this expansion. Moreover, the expansion will add new content to the updated Free Ride mode. Alongside new collectibles and locations, this will add more challenges to beat alongside Salieri, which are described as runs that will "test the skills of even the most elite mafiosi." The Mafia: The Old Country Man of Honor story expansion will release on August 14, 2026, across PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. It will cost $10 for owners of the base game to jump into.
