[Alpha] Pop Goes the GMail

Question

Pop Goes the GMail

PGtGM has been discontinued. Please use http://www.gnotify.com/gpopper/ instead!

PGtGM sits between you GMail account and your email client, converting messages from the web based mailbox into POP3 messages that a program such as Outlook Express or Firebird can understand.

POP3 server now fully works. You are able to download gmail emails through any email client. SMTP server appears to work.

Please post any bugs you find in the login process to the thread, or problems displaying messages.

Besides from what I've seem from that dumb thread here on neowin is it is always down and crashing and you can't have attachments. I'm going to skip it.

Yes. 2GB is the same as 1GB is the same as 40GB. Nobody has that much email. I wish that trend would just go away. I'd rather download Gator than use Aventure.

True in Aventure mail there is no attachement option (for sending at least) but idbuythatforadollar could do a POP3 for aventure mail too, and this way, you could send attachements too, no google spying on mails for ads ... Better no ?

Anyway, theres a marvellous program that does POP3 for many many emails accounts...

http://www.jmasoftware.com/english/

Enjoy it.

Bravo to idbuythatforadollar for his program... Could u do the same for Aventure mail so ?

i just wanted to thank idbuythatforadollar. i use trillian and wanted a pop3 server for gmail, so this works perfectly.

one item to bring up.

could you make an option to have pgtgm run silently (ie. either in the taskbar from startup with absolutely no notifications or not even in the taskbar at all)? i like my desktop with as little as possible showing and this would be the PERFECT application if it ran in a hidden state.

thanks again,

PGtGM does run "silently" for the most part. When it's minimized there's nothing in the taskbar, just an icon in the tray. If you have WinXP you can set it to hide that icon so you'll never know it's there.

yes, it does run pretty silently, but if i want to run it at startup, i get the main window, which i don't really need, as i check the mail through trillian, AND, i don't use xp, haha.

Put the program in your startup menu, then Right Click on it -> Properties -> Shortcut -> Run -> As Minimized

Now it will start, and automatically go to the tray.

This could be implemented easily in the program to make it easier for people who don't know there way around Windows.

This is way better than Gmail and its free and it looks way better...you also get 2GB instead of 1 and there are no adds or popups. :D

Aventure Mail

i find it interesting all the people that say how Aventuremail is better than GMail.

Atleast google will last and not just drop off the side of the planet some day.

Also, google tells you what the ad thing does, last time i checked i didn't even find a privacy policy on aventuremail's site.

3 suggestions:

Although note I cant run the program for very long, for a reason my 3rd suggestion will show, so if these are already in, I apologise.

1) Make sure the pop/smtp servers only accept connections from the local machine, and preferably don't even respond to requests from outside machines.

2) When the bubble saying youve got new mail appears, make it so if you click it, it can take you to the web interface at gmail.com (optional?), just like the MSN messenger hotmail popups do - although to the inbox, not straight to the message, could be another option. I like to work vie the web interface for uniformity between different machines.

3) HTTP or SOCKS proxy support... maybe just take the settings straight from control panel... currently it seems to try to directly connect, time out and crash.

Hey, Iam wondering whether you have plans to release the source code?

Iam .NET student and I would like to read you're source code for educational purposes! :)

Hey guys,

first off, cheers for all the support. Sorry i havent posted here for a while, my real life job has been hard recently!

right, lets reply to peoples comments:

I promise to release source code for this the day that gmail goes live. This is so PGtGM can get it's foot in the door before all the rip offs of my code come out :)

I found another issue that I'm not sure you have any control over. When you reply to a message in a POP client, it doesn't keep the thread going in GMail. It doesn't show the threaded conversation on the site like it does if you just replied through their site.

Thanks, I might be able to sort this out. I'll have a look at it, but I can't gurantee it'll be done for v0.7, as it isn't particualy high priority.

Great software! It would be great to see an option to have it minimized into the systray automatically on startup.

A few people have requested this, so I'll make sure it's included for the next version. 0.7 is expected this weekend.

1. This is an option in V0.7. By default, only local machine connections will be accepted.

2. Good idea, as soon as i work out how to capture events from popup balloons! Does anyone have any sample code they can send me? I'm working with a notifyicon control

3. Your the second person to request this. I believe .net webclient does accept proxy details, so I'll look into implimenting it soon. No promises for 0.7 tho.

Some very valid points, thanks for your input.

An unhandled exception of type 'System.Net.WebException' occurred in POP Goes the Gmail.exe

Additional information: Could not start POP server. There may already be an application using port 110

Need to maybe make an ini or something so in case we already have something that binds to 110 we can have pgtgm bind to a different port.

    • Hello, Christian Maas' XVI32 is a nice (and very small) hex editor. Speaking of hex editors, many years ago a colleague and I who both worked at Tribal Voice managed to edit a copy of the company's PowWow instant messaging client to make it behave better now that all of its lookup servers and other server-side tech was gone.  The program didn't support NAT (RFC-3022 was introduced in January 2001, the same time Tribal Voice was shuttered), but it still worked okay if you manually set up port-forwarding on your router.  The server at http://powwow.jazy.net/ hosts a copy (usual warnings about downloading and running untrusted code from random internet servers apply). I occasionally use some tools like Funduc Software's Search and Replace and Application Mover when I need to make mass-edits to text-based files or move programs with a hard-coded installation directories, respectively.  When I need to figure out the exact LCD panel inside of a laptop, EnTech Taiwan's Monitor Asset Manager is my go-to tool for that purpose. JD Design's website (now hosted on github.io) has a number of interesting freeware and shareware utilities.  I used to use their TouchPro utility to set the file timestamps on software I was mastering to match its version number (e.g., version 3.00 of a program had all of its files dates set to 3:00AM, and so forth). Karenware has a number of interesting freeware utilities, too. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
    • I still use HexChat! Not really as ancient as the 1994 AutoCAD above my post, but I have never found anything better to replace it. Yes we still operate an IRC server https://www.neowin.net/irc/ 😛
    • At work we still have a couple of people that use a version of AutoCAD LT purchased in 1994. This predates Windows 95 and works fine on versions of Windows up to XP. Its long since run in an locked down isolated XP VM, accessible via RDP. I did install LibreCAD for them, however they said it was just too different to get to grips with. In all fairness one of them is now 75 and the other is almost 60.
    • On my music making (non internet) PC Sony Acid Pro 7.0 Adobe Audition 2015 Korg Legacy Collection Windows 7 SP1
    • Anyway to download these versions without being on the Experimental builds?
