I don't know if this is a good approach or not, but I just stuck the 468x60 banner in.

Looks good... only suggestion is for the banner maybe a border or something?

i dont know if this is possible... but when a new news item is posted... have the header of that be a different color then the old ones... its much eaiser to just quickly look over the colors then to read...

Thanks everyone for 2 pages of replies and comments.

@Space guy: Yeah those things are just small HTML cosmetic changes, we'll implement it in the actual coding of the pages.

@shockz: I'll see what I can do with the banner.

And for all those who commented about the icons, they were all meant to be temporary anyway. I was only demonstrating the effects I was trying to achieve like the gray-out and selected coloured ones. But I'll say this before you all start asking, I'm really really crappy at designing icons, so if I tried, it wouldn't look nearly as nice :p
