I've come across an odd issue with 2.3.0.4 on my XP SP2 (fully patched) box; video resolution = 1024x768@32bit. I've gone through the initial step of setting my location, and the tray icon pulls the current temperature.

The main dialog window that appears shows me the forecast to the right of the main content. However, if I click on any options under the view menu (or any of the Views buttons on the left-hand side of the window), nothing happens. The window does now show me the radar or anything other than the default forecast. Similarly, the Forecast Display menu's options have no effect on my window. I've tried clicking the "Uninstall" button to clear all settings, and ran the program again, but to no avail. All I can do is look at the forecast!

Also, if I minimize the main dialog window, such that the only visible portion of WeathAlert is the system tray icon, I cannot get the main dialog window back. If I right-click the icon and select Restore, it looks like an outline of the original main dialog window appears, then the window is resized such that all I can see in its titlebar is "We..." , and the only menu item that's visible is "Preferences". Is this known behavior? Is there anything I can do to further troubleshoot?

Thanks!

Do you happen to have ATI's hydravision installed? I had a similar frustrating problem with its "save window size and position" feature since all .net windows forms appear the same to it.

Nope, I'm running an Intel 910 or 915-based video card. I do have Intel's proprietary video card management utilities installed, and when I'm at work, I have this laptop in a docking station with dual monitors enabled. I'm out of the office this week, and just discovered WeathAlert, so I've only used the app while undocked on a single monitor. I'll try it with dual monitors next week to see if that makes Windows play a little nicer.

Also, taking a hint from your question, I ran through all the device and driver settings I could find for the video card, but didn't see any options that might be useful. I'll see if there are updated drivers or if having multiple monitors makes a difference, and will let you know if I find a resolution.

Thanks!

Me too, this severe alert part has been busted forever... is there a new version coming out? Or maybe make it open source so we can fix it?

Just an option...

Edit- I just check out darkmark327's profile and it says Last Seen: '4 Oct 2006' ... soooo maybe if he doesn't respond soon I'll pm him or something.. I really like this program but it needs to be fixed.

I don't think Mark will mind so I thought I would share this little tidbit. I just received an email from him yesterday. He is still working on this, however he is rewriting it from scratch. He says that he needs to have it completed to graduate in May so expect a new release before then.

I have not seen the new app nor know any of the specifics of it. Just thought I would keep my fellow fans updated.

Honestly, I don't know. It was my understanding that it was supposed to. Have you tried entering your city name instead? I'm in the US so it works fine for me. Perhaps his new version will work internationally. Sorry I'm not "supporting" this app, just an avid user and fan.

Yeah, still coming along.

For full vista functionality, make sure you install .NET 1.1 (if a clean install of Vista), and set the compatibility to Win 2003 (otherwise tray icons aren't right).

The version I will have for my senior project will probably be along the lines of a very rough beta, i.e. enough to present. Writing it to use plugins is quite tricky (so far it's engendered a 35 pp. thesis).

OK, things didn't work out as planned; writing it the way I wanted to was very tough and I ran out of time, so WeathAlert 3 is not very functional and my project became more of a report on why it is so difficult to write a reliable plugin system (you can read it here if you'd like). I updated 2.3 a little bit; I'm going on a trip to Russia/Europe for a few months and my webspace will expire by the time I return, so I needed to do this so auto-update could continue working. I also fixed the Severe Weather Alerts thing. There seems to be some crashing issues on the first/second run which I can't narrow down (it hangs Visual Studio and I don't really have time to investigate). It also appears minimize to tray doesn't work (close to tray still does). Let me know if you have any more serious problems. Also note that .NET 2.0 is required now rather than 1.1. It also works fine with Vista now; there were some problems before (mostly relating to .NET 1.1/2.0)

I just found this Application - really like it - is it going to continue while the author is away? The only thing I've found so far that doesn't work is "Program Launch Options > Hidden in Tray" doesn't seem to work, but no big deal. Any comments about present status will be appreciated. Thanks.

    • Wow, spoken like a true blind hater, you don't even provide arguments. Please, go check my comment above to @seacaptain and you'll find out why what you say doesn't make sense in this context...
    • Get used to this, with AI tooling now uncovering new vulns and getting them exploitable far faster than has ever been possible before software is going to need to be updated far more frequently. Back in the day it may take reseachers weeks or months to do what AI can now do in hours. Once its a threat is discovered it's weaponsized far more quickly, meaning you simply can't be waiting 2, 3, 4 weeks to deploy a patch, it needs to be patched immediately. Going to be interesting handling this in the enterprise space where traditionally patching has been steady, but very staged (and rightly so up until now), that is going to have to change.
    • You don't need to "close all browser sessions constantly" or wait for updates to install. The updates download in the background while you use the browser, without interrupting you, they install automatically the next time you launch the app. And they install very fast (depending on your storage speeds, of course), you have to wait at most 2-3 extra seconds, if any. Seems like you haven't used Edge in a loooooooong time...
