Go to http://beta.microsoft.com and sign in using the guest account 'BetaReq'.(case sensitive without the '' s) You will need to use your Passport.com or Hotmail.com Passport account. If you do not have a .NET Passport, please go to http://www.passport.com to create one.

Yup, that's the only way to get into external betatesting nowadays unless you attend some tech-show held by MS. And you wont get a notice if you're not selected for a beta, your application will stay there for 6 months before you have to reapply again.

Remember, most programs require smaller amounts of testers, while I don't even care to guess how many applications are turned in each day, but I bet there's a ratio larger than 1:10 when it comes to needed testers/applications.

Some programs, like Office etc. will start with a limited external test and then increase the testbase each phase (beta2, beta3, rc0, rc1) until it, most often in the last RC, goes into public testing.

ps. don't expect a retail of the product you've tested after the beta is over. after office 2003, we got a cheap plastic radio, probably 50 cents or something. many people sign up just to get the gifts, without doing any testing/reporting, and will get screened out by lack of activity.

those are my immediate hints when it comes to testing. apply out of interest of the product, and be prepared to stumble on really bad bugs as well as report them, especially early on.

I use the UDP. No "built-in" drivers in RC2 afaik. And I wouldn't use them anyway, just as I don't use MS soundstorm-drivers, barebone without control panel etc. (and actually crapped out my standard soundstorm drivers).

Ok then...thanks.

    • I spent a good 15 min today trying to get new Outlook to use my default browser instead of forcing links into Edge. That kinda tactic is shady and it sucks.

    • Also try installing an alternative browser on ChromeOS. You have to enable dev mode and run it as a Linux app. Clunky.
