must be a service we have disabled, can you guys list your running services and which of them are set to automatica and manual and etc etc?

well look at "Automatic Update" Services then It Enables the download and installation of Windows updates. If this service is disabled, this computer will not be able to use the Automatic Updates feature or the Windows Update Web site. It should be on automatic, check if it is started or not. I dont think any other services shud have anything to do with windows update.

i've got automatic updates running

because when i went to the windows update site it told me i needed to have that and background inteligent transfer and event logger running to use it so i have to enable it

but when i did it got that error after it scanned for a few minutes

so i just turned on automatic updates through the control panel....hopefully that'll get me all the updates i need

JUST ALLOW THE ACTIVE-X CONTROL TO BE DOWNLOADED - PROBLEM GONE!

After installation of Windows XP/Service Pack 2 - the firewall default is on and certain browser security enhancements are activated. The problem can be solved by carefully reading the top line of the browers window where there is an innocent error message telling you that some active-x content has been blocked... you need to rightclick on this window and allow the active-x component to be installed. Then the windows update feature will work correctly. If you are running your own firewall (Black Ice, Zone Alarm, etc.) you may wish to turn off the MS Firewall (there is a control panel icon for firewall) or adjust you firewall settings.
