Okay, I followed your instructions.

Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp2.040919-1003 : Service Pack 1)

I downloaded "5.1.2600.1106.rar" extracted it to the desktop, ran Replacer.cmd, followed the instructions, and then I tried to apply a new theme, and it replaced my "Comtrol Panel" "My Computer" "My Documents" etc. icons, but it looks like I have Windows Classic theme. The background was changed and so were the shell32.dll icons, but the top of the window looks like MS Classic.

I also renamed all of the "uxtheme.dll" files to "uxtheme.dll.old" EXCEPT for the one in System32 folder.

Then, again, I replaced the uxtheme.dll file manually, instead of using Replacer.cmd, still no luck.

I just checked my winver version and I'm getting nothing like what you guys are getting. Seems like the date of build I have is way different than the uxtheme patches provided here.

If you need more information just ask or PM. Thanks.

I've checked on another XP computer that I own and get the same version.

I'm not quite sure when exactly this happened though probably some update.

@Krome: the uxtheme patcher gets updated regularly.

https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=140707

currently version 4. but it doesnt work 100% yet so i made this guide to patch your file manually.

@iverson0881: id try using the neowin patcher since it autorecognizes and patches the file. i must admit i have absolutely no idead what GDR stands for.

i made a new updated guide: https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=312381

please use it, this one is kind of cluttered.

    • One reason it might be running hotter is dust build up within the cooling or perhaps the paste has dried out. You could always try repasting your old GPU and cleaning the cooler. Your experience in Linux will be much better with an AMD GPU; the performance in gaming is much closer to Windows than nVidia would be. I personally think on Windows, AMD drivers are junk.
    • I reviewed it back in March, but I didn't have a 5070 at the time https://www.neowin.net/reviews/amd-rx-9070-review-vs-rtx-5070-4070-and-rx-9070-xt-7800-xt--just-good-enough/ When I reviewed the 9070 I did have a 5070 to compare it against, so the scores are there for the 9070 XT. it outperforms the 5070 in raster, and is barely neck and neck in Ray Tracing. So it's better than a 5070 in everything but Ray Tracing where it is neck and neck, or just under. To be honest, the uplift from 3080 when it was new to the 9070 XT is not as great a step up. If you can find a used 4080 Super for around the same money, you would probably be better off, but if you only want to buy new then the 16GB 9070 XT is the best value for money in its category.
    • I really hope the author's health is ok. Squirreling away a official backup of this software. Looks like the internet archive already cached a copy as well - https://web.archive.org/web/20...ldbit-soft.fi/software.html
    • AMD is supported out of the box in linux because of their open source driver. Nvidia does not. All my systems are amd and all of them work nicely on linux arch without doing anything.
    • Never had a problem with TPM and started using that many years ago in Win10. Through several motherboards and OS versions, it just does what it does without complaint. My games library doesn't even know it's there. Secure boot does a lot more than support anti-cheat, as it came along long before anti-cheat software. I've used it religiously since before I started using TPM, and I always liked it for being able to nullify virus contagions that try their best to come in underneath the firmware during boot, so that the OS doesn't see them, etc. That is its purpose, imo. I'll never understand why people who elect to use another OS feel compelled to run down Windows... I guess they need to do that to feel secure about their choices? I run Windows because it supports all the software (including games) natively that I want to buy, and I've never had to run down another OS to make me feel better about it. (Although it's certainly possible to do that, of course...) Win10 is on a ventilator atm, and Win11 is very close to being free, and I finally got to stop running StartAllBack as I moved to the Experimental/Dev channel and my 26300.8553 build supports the moveable taskbar and it's running fine at the top of the screen! Finally, my last major dislike of Win11 is being rectified! So, I'm not at all surprised to see Win11's share of the Steam survey hitting 70%.
