Doom III is out there! W00T!

BTW mods, keep going to remove links. ;) You won't stop the warez in Neowin. Is spreading faster than your bloody eyes.

Yes we will stop it, by banning warez idiots like you

Bye now & don't bother coming back.

Radish?

i'm sorry, but for those saying "It's a SEVER OS", i have to say: "It's the same thing as XP but with server stuff ADDED"

all the software that ran on XP and doens't have a SPECIFIC hard-coded lock against 2003 can run on 2003.

though let's not wander off on that topic.

is it true that it has a specific lock against 2003?

Sinse there's no such thing as Windows XP 2003 Edition?

Guess that project I've been working on for a year just never happened eh?

Man that's disappointing. I'm just glad you're the one to tell me.

But it's still strange that this OS I'm running doesn't exist. Oh well, guess I better get used to it?

I see a problem developing. On the 3rd, when everyone has thier copy of Doom3, hundreds of thousands, if not millions, we be posting subjects like, "This game is so cool!" "This games rocks!" Maybe there should just be on long thread where people who bought the game can go "Woot!" instead of all the seperate threads saying the same thing.

I doubt it. Any such lock would also prevent you from running it on any Windows build based on 3790. That would include the 64-bit editions of Windows XP, which I doubt Carmack would want.

No, not quite. It'd be more accurate to say it's same thing as XP with server stuff added and legacy stuff removed. This makes Windows Server 2003 a lot zippier, but also a lot less compatible with some games and applications.

I doubt it. And if the installer or game executable has a hissy fit when it detects your OS as Windows Server 2003, you can easily bypass that. I'm sure Doom3 will function just fine on Windows Server 2003, just don't expect support for it!

EDIT: Fixed typos.

I don't know where you got Windows XP Server 2003 from but as far as Microsoft is aware they haven't created anything by that name. They did however create Windows Server 2003 :shifty:

No, not quite. It'd be more accurate to say it's same thing as XP with server stuff added and legacy stuff removed. This makes Windows 2003 a lot zippier, but also a lot less compatible with some games and applications.

And what legacy stuff would that be?

There is nothing that's in XP that's not in 2003, save perhaps the logon UI (And I don't even remember if that is there somewhere).

The only significant differences in the XP 2002 and 2003 code comes from the Service Packs. Development of 2003 split off after 2002 Edition's RTM. A few SP1 changes were not merged into the 2003 code, and most were simply taken care of in different manners. 2002 SP2 and 2003 SP1 diverge even more, while at the same time adopting similar new security features. It's really an odd, and often puzzling, branching of code development. Certainly if the XP Service Packs had simply been based off of the 2003 codebase, there would be a lot less work for them to do. We won't again have a unified codebase for Client and Server builds until Longhorn (and even that may turn out differently).

So yeah, there's nothing in XP that was removed for 2003. But many things were updated. But not in such a way that it would prevent Doom 3 (or any other app, really) from running.

Are those who have it allowed to post screenies on here? I'd like to see more, so post some if it's ok.

Yeah, it was stated earlier in the thread that screenshots are fine.

I might have my copy of Doom3 in 12 hours (got a friend at EB), at the very latest I'll have it by Monday US time, Tuesday AU time. If I do get my hands on it, I'll definitely post photos and screenshots the second I'm home.

I never said Windows XP Server 2003. You made that one up.

There is, however, a product called Windows XP 2003 Edition.

It will only be released in 64-bit form. However, it does exist. And it is built off of the 3790 code (same as Windows Server 2003), but is compiled as a "Professional" edition OS.

It does not have services like "Windows Audio" or graphics acceleration turned off by default, as Server 2003 does. It also includes IIS 6.0, but with limitations similar to those in XP Pro's version of IIS 5.1. It also limits Remote Desktop connections just as XP 2002 does.

It does include the XP logon GUI, setup wizard, and all other features of Home/Pro. It identifies itself as Windows XP 2003 Edition.

However, it also identifies itself as Windows NT 5.2. And any program that checks OS version and won't install on Server 2003 will also not work on XP 2003.

^ erm lets get back on topic please ... :p

Well we were. The topic was whether Doom 3 will run on Windows Server 2003 (and subsequently, on Windows XP 64-bit editions).

And my answer remains, "probably yes, but perhaps without tech support from Activision."

This topic is now closed to further replies.
