Man arrested for not tipping at NY restaurant

Another question.

If your workers are paid low wages, they pay thier taxes on those dollars earned.

What about the tips? Surely if they earn e.g. $50 in one night in tips, do they decalre that to the taxman or keep it without declaring it???

After all, no one would know exactly how much in tips any one waiter/ress earned!

Considering they had a party of nine people (i think that's right), it's absolutely ridiculous not to leave that $13 tip that he should had.

It's just common courtesy to leave a waiter/waitress a tip even if it's not 18%, geez some people are just a$$holes.

Now that's the difference between us in the UK and you in the US. You expect tips wether you did a good job or not. We never expect tips, even if we do a good job!

It's just common courtesy to leave a waiter/waitress a tip even if it's not 18%, geez some people are just a$$holes.

why? has we've pointed out before, They are already being paid to do there job and once again, People in other jobs do much much more work and don't expect a tip.

And has for min wage being lower for waiters etc that is utter pathetic and needs to be sorted out

MR. PINK

Hey Look, I ordered coffee, right? Now we've been here a long ****in time, and she's only filled my cup three times. When I order coffee, I want it filled six times

MR. BLONDE

Six times? Well, you know, what if she's too ****ing busy?

MR. PINK

Words "too ****ing busy" shouldn't be in a waitress' vocabulary.

EDDIE

Excuse me, Mr. Pink - the last ****ing thing you need's another cup of coffee.

MR. PINK

Jesus Christ - I mean these ladies aren't starving to death. They make minimum wage. You know, I used to work minimum wage. And when I did, I wasn't lucky enough to have a job society deemed tip-worthy.

MR. BLUE

You don't care they're counting on your tips to live?

(Mr. Pink rubs two of his fingers together.)

MR. PINK

You know what this is? It's the world's smallest violin playing just for the waitresses.

MR. WHITE

You don't have any idea what you're talking about. These people bust their ass. This is a hard job.

MR. PINK

So's working at McDonald's, but you don't feel the need to tip them, do you? Why not? They're servin ya food. But no, society says don't tip these guys over here, but tip these guys over here. That's bull****.

that says it all :D

why? has we've pointed out before, They are already being paid to do there job and once again, People in other jobs do much much more work and don't expect a tip.

Actually, waiters and such are usually paid a LOWER BASE WAGE than many other positions because it is expected that they will be making additional income from tips. It is almost akin to a commission for sales people. I believe that the US Tax Code makes special provisions for waiters, expecting a 15% average income in addition to the base. They did so after seeing a great deal of under-reporting of income by this classification of worker, if I remember right.

I'm not saying all wait-staff always deserve their tips, but given how the system works, it is not unreasonable to expect it.

In this particular case, it appears the patron was in the wrong, but I am baffled that someone decided to press charges over the incident. The negative publicity from the restaurant may well cost them hundreds if not thousands of dollars over time, and that is a lot to give up to prove a point regarding such a small sum of money.

we never expected a tip, a tip was a bonus to us!

You hit the nail on the head, that is exactly what a tip is

If I go out to a restaurant with my parents (I'm still 15), my Mum and Dad will tip if the person is nice and polite. They will always tip if we are out with a large number of people.

Btw, we went somewhere once where it said that a percentage of the bill went towards the waiter/waitress. Also, we've been somewhere else where it said that the tip is shared out between all the waiters/waitresses and not just who served you

http://www.helenair.com/articles/2004/09/1...01091104_06.txt

This is ridiculous. Now it's the LAW to pay gratuity? Hello, gratuity's supposed to be a reward for good service.

You know who's fault this is? Restaurant owners. They've taken the concept of gratuity, abused the hell out of it and use it as an excuse to pay their hard working waiters and waitresses crap. "Hey, let's offload some more of our overhead onto our customers! Now we only have to pay our waitresses $3/hr. Great!"

If restaurant owners would pay their waiting staff what they're worth, than gratuity would be gratuity and diners would be able to tip accordingly once again and feel good about it, instead of feeling forced to tip for crappy service just so the waitress can eat.

honestly i must disagree even though i agree that tiping is not a law but not tiping is very taboo in the states.

$3/hour may sound bad but i have friends they work for an hour and in that hour they get $150 off of tips alone so it's not exacty the owners fault

in all fairness, unless the waiter is hurling abuse or actually ruining your night then i think its quite rude to not tip. the guy is going out of his way to carry a plate to your table and ensure your night goes well and if that isnt worth a measly 10% then shame on you.

Yes it is true that you should tip everytime you can.

However there are many people in the world that cannot afford the tip. Lets say you are a factory worker and berally make enough to feed your family, then one day you decide to go out and have lunch at a restaurant with your family. Something out of your badget, but you've being saving. How the **** are you gonna give ten percent as a tip?

Yes the waitress goes out of her way to bring you the food, but that is her job, she gets money from doing it. You however as a factory employee get yelled at and maltreated and do not get a cent over your wage even though you are working your azs off.

Think of that before you say "shame on you".

ok i didn't read the whole thread, but on the first page it was mentioned that the person is doing you a favour by bringin the food to your table etc etc, therefore deserves the tip. My thought was echoed by someone else who replied, it's his job. i agree with this, yeah the wages most likely suck, but if we started tipping everyone for doing their job, where would it end. Would u tip the mailman as he brought the mail right to ur door, and then tip the operators every time u make a fone call cos they connect you, and then tip the guy at the filling station cos well he took ur money. All their jobs, so why should it be mandatory to tip someone for simpoly doing what they're paid for anyway, I admit they are paid poorly, but that as an arguement is just kinda silly. fyi i personally try to tip around 20% if the service was good, nothing if the waiter was a jackass

^ i totally agree with that. a while ago on 60 minutes they brought up the topic and were saying how even some people wokring in shoe stores demanded tips. seriously, thats the dude's job, if he does it well and is courteous to the customers, AND if he's lucky, then he'll get a tip. it shouldnt be mandatory that you have to give someone a tip just because he or shes serving you (doing their job, what they're paid to do).

I agree. Getting arrested for not tipping is BS in my opinion. I'm a college student and I normally don't have loads of money lol, so if/when I tip I don't give too much because that's cutting into my school fund. But yeah, I TRY to tip if the service is good.

    • Wow, that could have been dangerous, certainly not ready for these things. They have to be 100% or pretty well close to it. Not that I will see one i doubt, never mind ride in one, they may have them in London, but I doubt they will come to where I live.
    • Nothing kills CMF Phone 2 Pro's successor due to rising memory prices by Hamid Ganji Storage and RAM prices have been rising over the past year, leading to a significant increase in the cost of electronics for customers around the world. Many companies are now revising their plans for upcoming devices due to higher component costs and overall production expenses. CMF is the latest company to cancel the successor to one of its best-selling phones due to rising memory prices. CMF is a sub-brand of Nothing and focuses on making budget smartphones for growing markets. The brand launched the CMF Phone 2 Pro last year with some eye-catching specifications and an affordable price. While many customers may have been waiting for a successor this year, one of the company’s executives has announced that CMF will not release a new smartphone this year. And AI is to blame. As Nothing co-founder Akis Evangelidis announced on X, the company has been working on a successor to the CMF Phone 2 Pro, but with current memory prices, it cannot “build a phone that feels like a genuine step forward at a price that makes sense for CMF.” So, no new CMF phone will be launched this year. Meanwhile, Evangelidis said the company still has several new products in the pipeline, including some in entirely new categories. He added that the Nothing brand will also continue launching new products through 2026. Budget smartphones are among the first victims of the surge in RAM and memory prices, as they have become more expensive to build. The sharp increase in memory costs could also reshape the traditional price ranges associated with budget phones. Apple CEO Tim Cook also recently said that price increases for some of the company’s products are unavoidable because RAM and memory have become significantly more expensive this year. Analysts estimate that the base price of the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro could rise to $1,399 due to current market shortages.

    • Ocenaudio 3.19.4 by Razvan Serea Ocenaudio is a full featured, fast and easy to use audio and music editor. It is the ideal software for people who need to edit and analyze audio files without complications. Ocenaudio also has powerful features that will please more advanced users. To assist ocenaudio development, a powerful toolset of audio editing, analysis and manipulation called Ocen Framework was created. ocenaudio is also based on Qt framework, a well known library for cross-platform development. Cross-platform support ocenaudio is available for all major operating systems: Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Native applications are generated for each platform from a common source, in order to achieve excelent performance and seamless integration with the operating system. All versions of ocenaudio have a uniform set of features and the same graphical interface, so the skills you learn in one platform can be used in the others. VST plugins support Ocenaudio supports VST (Virtual Studio Technology) plugins, giving its users access to numerous effects. Like the native effects, VST effects can use real-time preview to aide configuration. Real-time preview of effects Applying effects such as EQ, gain and filtering is an important part of audio editing. However, it is very tricky to get the desired result by adjusting the controls configuration alone: you must listen the processed audio. To ease the configuration of audio effects, ocenaudio has a real time preview feature: you hear the processed signal while adjusting the controls. The effect configuration window also includes a miniature view of the selected audio signal. You can navigate on this miniature view in the same way as you do on the main interface, selecting parts that interest you and listening to the effect result in real time. Multiselection for delicate editions To speed up complex audio files editing, ocenaudio includes multi-selection. With this amazing tool, you can simultaneously select different portions of an audio file and listen, edit or even apply an effect to them. For example, if you want to normalize only the excerpts of an interview where the interviewee is talking, just select them and apply the effect. Eficient edition of large files With ocenaudio, there is no limit to the length or the quantity of the audio files you can edit. Using an advanced memory management system, the application keeps your files open without wasting any of your computer's memory. Even in files several hours long, common editing operations such as copy, cut or paste happen almost instantly. Fully featured spectrogram Besides offering an incredible waveform view of your audio files, ocenaudio has a powerful and complete spectrogram view. In this view, you can analyze the spectral content of your audio signal with maximum clarity. Advanced users will be surprised to find that the spectrogram settings are applied in real time. The display is updated immediately when altering features such as the number of frequency bands, window type and size and dynamic range of the display. Ocenaudio 3.19.4 changelog: Adds fallback fonts so every language and symbol displays correctly Improves autosave and session recovery stability Improves region navigation and display Fixes a crash when the level meter is used on displays with a scaling greater than 200% Fixes memory corruption when using the silence selection tools Fixes crashes when closing a file while effects are still being processed Fixes a freeze when applying effects to many files at once (macOS) Fixes crashes related to audio devices on Windows Fixes invalid file names when exporting regions whose label is used as the file name Other bug fixes and improvements Download: Ocenaudio 64-bit | Portable | ~40.0 MB (Freeware) Download: Ocenaudio for Linux and Mac OS View: Ocenaudio Homepage | Screenshot Get alerted to all of our Software updates on Twitter at @NeowinSoftware
