oldaccount1
I like the theory of the magnet causing the plane crash. It's the only plausbile theory I've heard about it crashing (hell, theres not many ways you can make a place crash). A magnetic field powerful enough to make a plane crash from such a distance would have made it impossible for Sawyer to use metal parts from the plane to hide the guns, for the guns to remain in one place, or any successful the magnetic storage (like the tapes in the hatch) to work. Very very good point. Regarding the phone message, "namaste" is what we say at the end of my yoga classes. It means something like "I bow to you." I don't think that that has really any bearing on the meaning of the message, but I just thought it was cool that I recognized it. :) I have to miss Lost tomorrow night for work. DAMMIT!! oh well....thank goodness for ABC.com. Plus it wouldn't actually bring the plane down since airplanes contain very little metal that would be attracted to a magnet. It might interfere with the equipment, but that's about it. I've got to wonder how they'd get a thousand miles off course on a clear day like that too. It might interfere with the equipment, but that's about it. I've got to wonder how they'd get a thousand miles off course on a clear day like that too. It's not attracted as such, but by cutting a magnetic field, a metal generates a voltage across it. That's perfectly normal in normal flights, since the Earth's magnetic field runs roughly perpendicular, straight into the gound. So its inevitable that a current is generated across the wings. The thing is, though, the orientation video mentioned "unique electromagnetic fluctuations" around that part of the island. A plane moving through an alternating magnetic field will have a much larger voltage across it (rate of cutting flux increases. It's a physics thing). So, depending on how strong the fluctuations are (quite strong I should think, remembering Sayid's inability to find North in Season 1), it could potentially destroy electrical equiptment moving at the sort of relative speed a plane would. Planes move very fast, and so moving very fast against a very strong fluctuating magnetic field will either destroy electrical equiptment inside the plane (the whole reason this stuff happens is because the magnetic field makes electrons move, which means electricity flows. At very high flux cutting rates, this could lead to massive currents in small electronic devices). It's a bit scientific, yea, but its what would happen. The reason stuff like this doesn't crash planes all the time in the real world is because the earth has a very weak magnetic field, to which the plane moves at an angle that is not 90?, and the earth's field doesn't fluctuate to any massive extent. Actually, the earth's magnetic field is only perpendicular to its surface at the poles - it comes out, so to speak, at its southern most point and enters at the north pole. At the equator, the magnetic field is parallel to the surface, whereas in most other parts of the world, it's close enough to parallel. I dunno about the other stuff though. Haven't studied that yet. Yes, you are right: its approximatley perpendicular at the poles, and ca. parallel everywhere else. However, that doesn't affect the validity of the field cutting as being a reason for induced EMF. The plane would still be cutting the magnetic field. With regards to the island, the hanso video that was posted 1 or 2 pages ago showed that the hanso foundation, in 1970 (I think it was 1970), sent up a satellite to observe the "magnetosphere", and any magnetic anomalies. I think its safe to say that Dharma's presence on the island is a result of that, and was probably expanded to more roles once it was discovered that this was an uncharted, uninhabited island. If the magnetic field distortion was so great that a 1970s private satellite (with its limited sensitivity) could detect it, and it was a strong enough distortion not to be ruled out as random error in the equiptment, that the magnetic fluctuations are strong enough to induce an EMF in apassing plane, strong enough to destroy its communication devices. Okay, I understand what you're getting at. It explains how the communication went down and why they were trying to turn around in the first place. But I'm not sure I get how it would have brought a whole plane down. You said that there would be a current generated across the wings of the plane. Could that have caused the turbulence they encountered and their subsequent crash? Blackice
voltages generated across the wings are perfectly fine, and perfectly normal. The magnetic field itself wouldn't bring the plane down. What it is, is that all the metals in the computers that control the plane are also cutting the field, and also have an induced voltage (and hence current). So, if they all cut a very strong alternating field at high speed, they'll all have very large voltages generated across them, which could very easily damage them. So its not the magnetic fluctuations directly that bring down the plane as passing one magnet over another does - its that all the components cut the magnetic flux, so all had very large voltages induced in them. Notice that the transciever they recovered was low on battery power? If they're going on a long flight, wouldn't it be one of the most basic safety precautions to change the batteries? Cutting magnetic fluc causes electrons in the material to move, hence why you get an induced current. I won't go into the physics of it in too much detail, so that's essentially it. The electrons are made to accelerate. Well, if the electrons in the battery were made to leave it, and go around the circuit at a faster rate, it makes sense that the battery would drain quickly, and the higher current would damage the electrical components.
