Desktop Icons without Text

Recommended Posts

I think that this is the longest thread I've ever seen (apart from jokes etc.)!

I know that Herby thrives on challenges and responds almost instanataneously so here's an easy one:  the updated .reg files etc. are added to the .zip in the first post in this thread, so how about also adding the tutorial?  It's at post 378 (I think that's the correct one), but if it was in the first .zip, there would be everything there together - the .reg files, individual notes, along with a "how to".

I also have a comment about the software that's been, or being, produced to do these tweaks automatically.  I acknowledge the skill that Herby has clearly demonstrated here and also the skill of the programmer(s) who have taken these techniques and put them into a package that is "user friendly" for those who don't like to play with the registry.  Personally, I prefer to know exactly what's going on, so would rather do the tweaks by hand and have the frustration/pleasure of sorting out problems if they don't work exactly as planned.  If such software had been produced and put onto the market without Herby sharing these great secrets with everyone, I wouldn't have had so much pleasure in creating textless icons.

Hi

like you I enjoy the knowing how things work but i some pont I want an easier way to do things. Like anything one person can find a use for something while another will not, no biggie its just the way things are.

Sorry for my late reply,.. I had some problems with my ISP (technical problems with the DNS server). :/

I've added the Tutorial to the first zip file. :)

Hi, just a question but if i uninstall SCCU will it revert back to default Windows? If it doesn't how can I set everything back to default? Thanks for any help.

When you save the registry files with SCCU, it creates the regfiles in SCCU\RegFiles.

Go to the RegFiles folder and run RemoveAll.cmd and refresh your Desktop and they're gone. :)

I found out how to remove the "create shortcut" button. (Yes I went from the beginning page by page)

My other question is can you add those horizontal separator's?

Uhmm,.. you can find all the info about how to remove the "create shortcut" command in the first post. :)

It's not possible to add separator's with a reg file,.. they are hardcoded in dll and exe files.

@ Jim: check your mail ;)

I've uploaded SCCU v1.05 to VirtualPlastic, you can download it here. :)

Changelog:

Version 1.02

Auto accept changes, default is not

New menu item on drag drop action, default is not

Show environment varables...at the moment not user selectable, default is show

Version 1.03

I was wondering if it is possible to request an office 12 flavour of the office icon without text? Thanks!

Sure,.. it's possible to request. :p

Can you post or PM me the shortcuts? (I don't have Office 12 so I need to know the locations and the names from the executables.)

i cant figure it out...i have clicked on every button and everything....like in the column on the left, i have a tree labeled test, and then if you expand it, there is another one labled test also. And the icon on my desktop is labled test also. I right click the icon and i get copy, creat shortcut, and rename, and in the applications, I have clicked everything, and nothing seems to work....can you give me a link to the latest version, i might have an old one

just got the latest version, and that is not it....

Hi

link to first page in this guide is https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=224324

There you will find latest version, for now anyway. I am almost finished with version 1.08 and will post when all is ok.

To remove a Class Icon click the check box of parent (test in this case) then goto Class menu and choose remove. SCCU only removes a Class if it is checked.

Not sure what version you are using sounds like first release.

Hope this helps

Jim

There is no office 12 specific icon afaik. The office 2003 icon is in that file, icon group 7. I'm not sure if that helps

Which icon location do you use?

WOWthank you very nuch for this little tweak! I love it and for once i think this tweak will stay for a long time!

You're welcome! :)

Hello there, i have been following this excellent thread, and have used quite a few of the icon posted here. But I couldnt find one for Norton Antivirus 2004 which I use. Can you post one reg file for that.

Thankyou

what about one for diskeeper/reg seeker/kaspersky anti virus/spybot search and destroy/spyware blaster? it's up to you to choose...thank you

No problem,.. but I don't have much time atm & my todo list is pretty big,.. if you don't want to wait you can create them with SCCU (see Post #1 for more info).

@ viVian: can you PM me the shortcuts / commands from Norton Antivirus 2004?

    • Google's NotebookLM gets some useful features you may have been waiting for by Aditya Tiwari It's been three years since Google introduced its AI-powered note-taking and research app, NotebookLM. Just when Apple is about to kick off WWDC 2026, the search giant has announced a platter of new NotebookLM features that add agentic capabilities in chat and more advanced reasoning. For starters, NotebookLM now draws its fuel from Gemini 3.5 and Antigravity to improve accuracy and reliability. One of the things people have been asking for a long time is more transparency into the thinking steps. NotebookLM now shows expanded thinking steps in chat, providing better visibility into the thinking process. Google compared the upgraded NotebookLM with prior versions and found that it "achieved an average win rate of over 65% — a 15% point margin above parity — across our top five core evaluation dimensions," including accuracy & quality, multilingual support, large document analysis, document creation, and advanced research. It showed substantial improvements in analyzing large documents, achieving a 69.9% win rate. The system also delivered "exceptional performance" in advanced web research and source discovery with a 78.2% win rate. The AI research tool now generates outputs in more formats. You can give instructions to guide the outputs and download the generated files from the studio panel. Here are the newly supported formats: PNG and SVG for data visualizations and charts PDFs, docx, markdown, and text files for documents PNG, JPG, and GIF for images JSON and CSV for structured data XLSX for Microsoft Excel PPTX for Microsoft PowerPoint You can make edits after the outputs are generated. The feature is available globally; therefore, you can provide directions in one language and create outputs in another. Google said that it's also making it easier to get started with a project in NotebookLM. Instead of having a list of sources beforehand, you can even start with loose ideas, and NotebookLM can help build the repository of sources through the chat. For instance, you can find primary sources in other languages to get new perspectives or explore related works of an author. All of these new features are rolling out globally for those who can loosen up their pockets. They are available to users with Google AI Ultra and all Workspace business customers with AI Ultra access. Google has plans to expand them to more users in the future.
    • "...will no longer be bundled with the monthly Windows security updates or Patch Tuesdays. Instead the company is shifting delivery of these updates to Microsoft Update...". Three names that all refer to Windows Update. Does the author even understand what he is writing about?
    • and somehow windows is the only one with issue every patch tuesday is a mess, android macosx have all that and it never had issues locking people out of their own data.
    • It's the ol': I told my kids I was older than Google and they thought I was joking. For me I was born the same year as the internet
