hay~

I found something rad about Opera, a feature that i didn't even know existed. (Well i kind of did but i didn't know it applied to things like this.)

CLICK ME

Notice how the image (which MSN's site has resized) is all ugly in IE and Firetruck, but it's all pretty in Opera. That's what it looks like with 'smooth zooming of images' enabled in Opera. If i untick that it looks hideous like the others.

Even when i enable 'smart dithering' in IE it still looks ugly. I looked around in about:config in Firetruck but i didn't see anything that was real obvious. Do IE and Firetruck have features like that at all? If not, sucks for them. :/

Wow, i thought that feature just made images smoother when you zoomed into them, obviously not :p. Always wondered if there was actually any difference. I'll be keeping this on now youve pointed that out, thanks :)

My computer had been clean of Firetruck since i got it, until like 3 days ago. <_<

The items on the bottom are just links. I didn't want to have a full personal bar (because i want more vertical space), so i added buttons to the 'main' tool bar for links and just put like nick names for them. (4c is 4chan, di is dictionary.com, go is Google, wi is Wikipedia, and stuff.) That's what you're talking about, right?

^^ yeah.

I thought I'd bite the bullet and try a more up to date version of Firefox, so went to the official site and grabbed the latest official build.

I went in with a clean mind, my plan was to use it as my browser for a week.

The speed it worked at was disgusting....I couldn't stand it. There I was trying to view the latest strip of CtrlAltDel-Online, and about 3 minutes later I let out a guttural scream of frustration. 2 minutes later I had Firefox uninstalled, was using Opera again, and viewing the new CtrlAltDel-Online strip.

There are a) optimized builds b) tweaks to make Firetruck faster.

But even w/ those Opera > Firesnail w.r.t page rendering speed from my observation. The speed at which Opera shows pages when we go back and forward simply makes you scream "wow!"

w.r.t others like customization, extensibility I find Firetiger > Opera.

^^ yeah.

Can this nightly be installed on top of 1.0 final?

585117426[/snapback]

Yes, WFM here. However, there is a bug in the trunk nightly which means you can't install themes. I know its minor but there are a few regressions since the code for firefox 1.0 has been merged with the development trunk. Check http://forums.mozillazine.org/ for the bug status on nightly builds.

It's a personal preference thing. I use Firefox. Opera's big hurdle is it costs money to get rid of the ads. IE has a multitude of problems because of its age. Yes, I realize that it has had updates, but the guts of IE are almost the same as the IE that I had on my old Win95 machine. Plus, I was just reading about the latest IE problem that has to do with ActiveX (again). IE will continue to lose its market share unless Microsoft completely rebuilds it. Firefox is free, fixes problems when they occur and doesn't have ActiveX. Speed wise, they are all comparable. Remember when Netscape was the number 1 browser (at one time it was, I swear to God  ) but they didn't keep it up to date on a regular basis and that's when IE took over. Sound familiar? Opera, although a nice browser, will always be number 3 because of the cost. So, that leaves IE and Firefox. Until Microsoft rebuilds IE, it will continue to lose its market share to Firefox. Like I said, I use Firefox, and no, it's not a fanboy thing. I like my browser to be fast, secure and free. Opera, IE and Firefox are fast, no arguement there. But, Opera isn't free and IE is ancient and allows BHO's, viruses and spyware on your computer on a daily basis. If you want a free, up to date, secure and fast browser, Firefox is the only one of the three that is all that. I prefer IE, but until it is as safe to use as Firefox, I'm not using it.

Really?

People, Firefox is no longer a PR.? If you are using the Opera could be version 25.54 and it would still suck. would still suck.? Pages don't render correctly, half the time none of the media pSecurity wise, it ranks up there with IE, ****ty!ithBut, let me thank you in advance because you'll be bringing your computer to my shop to fix it when it gets overloaded with viruses, spybots etc.ruses, spybots etc.? So, go ahead, When you run into compatability problems, don't call me, you won't like the answer that I will have for you.I will have for you.

Doesn't sound quite like it.:whistle:your mind...

I have honestly never understood it, you guys. As annoying and crappy as Internet Explorer is, i have never thought to blame it for any spyware that i might get. I mean... if i'm driving a rusty Geo Metro down the highway and i get hit by an SUV and i die, maybe i could have lived if i had an SUV of my own... but that doesn't mean that i died because of my car. Somebody else hit me. That was the reason, that was the party at fault. Definitely my Metro could have been safer, but i'm an idiot if i didn't know that when i bought it and decided to take it onto the highway.

Further, although there are a couple Internet Explorer flaws that you absolutely can't do anything about, a LOT of the stuff people whine about regarding IE can be fixed by just disabling ActiveX and all that other garbage. It's a few clicks in the security preferences. I don't know why that's such a difficult concept for people to grasp, really.

But what's the most important is the fact that you're not just sitting there when you get spyware and stuff in Internet Explorer. It's not like you're signing into Gmail and then all of a sudden WHAM you get hit by a porn dialler out of no-where. You have to actually visit a malicious Web site in order to get stuff like that. I'm not that old, guys... i became an Internet junkie when i was a pre-teen. And i've always had this thing called 'common sense', which magically allows me to determine whether or not sites with 'FREE ACCESS 2 XXX SITES CLICK HERE!!!!!!!' plastered all over them were reputable. My special powers haven't let me down yet. I only wish i could pass them on to some of you.

I have to admit that I do love firefox so I may be a bit biased but I just tried Opera 7.54 and the latest test version and there are definitely some flaws that just don't exist in FF.

The major deal breaker was the problem every now and again with the browser losing it's history. I would be browsing and all of a sudden, I wouldn't be able go back at all. That is a big problem for me as I'm sure it would be for most. I looked into possible solutions and found an older one that did not work.

Opera does seem to load sites slightly faster but an optimized version of FF will out-do Opera. Overall, Firefox is much more stable for me and with the Moox M2 build, I cruise along lightning fast. To top it off, my startup on FF is just about 2 seconds. Opera is closer to 3 and IE6 is about 1.5. Not a huge difference between the three but FF does well.

My vote goes to Firefox

I've been using IE and Opera (among other browsers) for about 7 years and recently, over the last year, I have given FF a fairly good go.

Opera and IE are very good, I don't have much prob with either of them.

Opera works better generally IMHO. The only thing IE does better is that it saves web pages and handles them better IMO, (than Opera). Firefox is a very good browser, but it can't replace Opera and IE for me. It's good that people are really taking to it because we need as much competition as we can get. I'll stick with Opera, and use IE for saving web pages. (I also prefer the way it handles favorites compared to Opera.

i used to think that i have 'history problem' only to realize that i opened the link in a new window....

one of the things i love about Opera 7.6 Preview is the trash can. it saves tabs that i closed complete with it histories. very handy.

i discovered something recently. i edited some photos (jpegs) using photoshop without realizing that i'm working in CMYK mode. when i tested the html using IE and Firefox, all i get was a red x. but it worked just fine in opera. it took me 4 hours to figure out that i'm working in CMYK instead of RGB.

RGB vs CMYK

    • WordArt was cool. We now have color fonts as a substitute although Word only supports COLRv0 and COLRv1 (Fraud OS 11 only). The OpenType SVG color font format needs to be supported by Office. Adobe's apps support it
