Well, I only have one window open and once in a while I'll be cruisin along and all of a sudden I just can't go back - at all. No extra windows, no abnormal browsing behavior, no pattern to it, it just happens all of a sudden. I've seen others with this problem and it only happened with the latest test version for me. I know it's a test version but all of the FF pre-1.0 versions that I ever tried never had something this severe wrong with it.

Less problems=More Fun so I stick with FF.

Firefox lets me use only what I want, and use some very nice extensions. It seems to behave more nicely for me in general, I just prefer using it most of the time.

Opera has a ton of extra features, most of whichI could care less about -- I only want a browser. It does however have the very nice zooming feature, which is superior to the text-scaling that the other browsers can do. It's pretty fast too.

What issues are they?

After spending 2 days forced to use Firefox because of issues with Opera, I will admit that I could easily become used to it....especially that Foxytunes extension

But my loyalty still lies with Opera.

I'm a recent convert to Opera 8 Beta 1 from Firefox. While I can see the advantages that firefox has over opera, I switched because of a few big things.

1.) Firefox has terrible redraw on certain sites on Windows.

This doesn't happen on all sites, but on certain sites with background images, which includes neowin.net, the movement of the entire window (or moving other windows over it) becomes sluggish and exhibits redraw issues. You can also see this in poor autoscroll performance on some sites. This is purely aesthetic, but Internet Explorer and Opera do not exhibit these issues. Open neowin up and try moving the window around really fast, you'll feel it. Do the same with Opera or IE. See ?

2.) Firefox has poor initial start up speed. It's just too slow the first load and even the loads when you've closed the browser completely out, longer than Opera.

I used to hate the way opera looked, but it seems they've made 8 look pretty awesome. It certainly looks better than firefox. (you have to remove the ads by purchasing it of course; the ads suck, admittedly) The RSS feeds are handled in a much better way on Opera. The download Manager is better. The Voice feature is awesome. The tab feature is awesome. Better default icons. I've not used it enough yet to really see how bad the compatibility is, but I'd say it really isn't much worse than say, firefox. Gmail is a bit glitchy but at least it mostly works (in 8 beta 1)

Anyway, I still think firefox is a solid browser, but I hope they fix the redraw and boot issues because they really suck. I'm an Opera convert in the meantime, I think they've made some solid improvements to it from the early 7 version which didn't impress me.

Opera is still the fastest browser on earth. Sure it costs money, and sure it's not opensource, but I really don't care. I'm pretty comfortable with it, never had a problem, and everything I need comes in the installer. No need to search for extensions, and stuff. Try the new Opera 8 beta, it's great, and has many improvements.

Anyway, why don't you try both? I have both installed, although I only used firefox for gmail ("used", because I no longer need it, since gmail offers pop support, and I just check it with M2 ). It was the only page that didn't work with opera

You'll probably get more Firefox votes, because it has had a good marketing campaign, but you should really try Opera. I still think it's the best browser around.

Yes, Firefox fans seem to be saying that about Opera. But who cares if there are features you don't use, if Opera is both smaller and faster than Firefox anyway?

It seems that a lot of people prefer the convenience of having a fully functional browser out of the box, rather than going through "extension hell".

I don't know if anyone's mentioned this (too lazy to read all the pages) but Mozilla does come with IRC client and email, although not sure if with FF (which is practically the whole point of this thread). It's called Mozilla Suite.

I love FF, I think it is better than Opera, the only complaint I have is that it doesn't save your pages if you close all of them. But then, as demorgoron first said, you can download an extension for that.

EDIT: oh yeah, and I think IE sucks. Every time I use it I get a million popups and all these toolbars. Im probably d/ling something I shouldn't but it ****es me off anyways. and no tabs!

lynx is by far the best and has absolutely no problems (hey, there is nothing there to have a problem in the first place )

but no, seriously, i think that each browser has its place! opera is faster and takes about 0.5-1 seconds to load on my pc, therefore (and for a lot of other reasons) i prefer using it!

however, i beleive that opera is for serious hardcore surfers who spend many hours each day at their pc (hey, i spend at least 12-18 hours per day at mine) and firefox is (at the moment, though this could change) for the more casual user who just doesn't like internet un-explorer!

one of my main gripes when it comes to firefox is that one cannot hide the menu bar at the top!. in opera you merely need to press ctrl+F11 and suddenly you have an extra centimetre of browsing space!

I have both installed, but Firefox is by far the best of the two. Firefox is open-source if I'm not mistaken, and Opera couldn't be...if it was I'd remove the text/image ads in the free version. Because the Mozilla project is open-source, it opens the door for new, efficient, even revolutionary developments. The Firefox community is one of best I've seen, 3rd party plugins are available by the s**t load, further enhancing the browser. Opera has its own features, but they are greatly overshadowed by the potential Firefox carries. I've been using Firefox since October of 2003, and have been using it ever since and will continue to use it. Ad-Supported software to say the least, is annoying. Even though you can learn to ignore the ads, the Firefox project still out-guns Opera.

go firefox. There are sooo many great features. You got Security (Pop-up blocking, Ad-Block, etc.), Tabbed Browsing, great extensions, speed, nice looking, easy to use. The list goes on and on man but u wont be disappointed if you go with FireFox!

LOL...heyyy did u just insult lynx! no fair!

I know many don't like having to install extensions for this...but, u can have a compact menu (all the meny items popping down in a submenu from a button) with the help of an extension in FF:

Aaaaand to answer the thread...I prefer BOTH!

Actually the price of Opera is quite low and dude those ads are pretty much unobtrusive. By the way I havent seen one valid reason other than the Open Source one why Firefox is beter than Opera.

What are you talking about? The ad is huge! Also, $39 USD is a lot of money for a web browser, especially when Firefox is free and can do almost everything, if not everything that Opera can do.

    • WordArt was cool. We now have color fonts as a substitute although Word only supports COLRv0 and COLRv1 (Fraud OS 11 only). The OpenType SVG color font format needs to be supported by Office. Adobe's apps support it
