[DEFINITIVE] Half-Life 2 Thread

I'd like to add that VU brought this on themselves.  The whole reason Valve created Steam was because they were sick of publishers taking all the money for making a $0.25 copy.  Publishers are greedy ######, plain and simple.

Well if this is the case, why do they charge the same as retail? Oh, right, same reason as the publishers: greed.

Tangiable costs make up 50% of a game purchase cost. That is the shop (gets a big cut), delivery (from the factory in china or whereever to the shops) and printing the CD and manual itself.

Frankly Valve should charge $35 for HL2 Bronze - why not $25, I hear you say. Well there is credit card costs, plus bandwidth costs. Add a little extra for the development of steam and that seems right.

woah were is it 25 bronze? not on my steam!

Update: George Broussard of 3D Realms had this to say on Shacknews:

Hey Vivendi...seriously, **** you.

Broussard is my new hero. I mean sure we are all ****ed he hasn't released DNF, but if that man can whip out and rag on VU because HE wants to play HL2, he's my hero.

Well, of course he's upset. He needs to play the engine which he will announce he will be shifting his "game" to!

But seriously, all you ever hear from Broussard is about what game he's been playing at the moment. And you wonder why he'll never finish that damned DNF.

i am under the understanding that they cannot have the price any lower. i could have sworn that in the past i have seen that valve cannot undercut vivendi's prices, as it is against their contract.

I have a question about Halflife Source, does anyone know if Valve are going to release this as a stand alone add on?

I know it comes with the silver deal, but I didnt want to pay for that (I got an ATI voucher).

Do you think it will ever be avilable as a download?

anyone called any of the stores (us) and asked if they are doing launch a lauch party or anything? what stores did a launch party for Halo 2?

There is no launch party everyone that was probley planning on buying it has already probley bought it. Hell, I did...

Valve gets less then half of the profits from each product sold, even though they are the ones who created and funded it. And yes, as others have said Valve cannot charge less then $50 as it would be in violation of their contract with VU. Oh and the CD, cardboard box and manual cost VU around $1 per copy in all, which means they are making around 25 times what they pay. It's called buying in bulk.

Hmm... An anti-competitive price fixing agreement... Someone call the EU

After taxes, HL2 Bronze cost me ?34.00 - which basically is no cheaper than going out and buying it in the shops here. But I just wanted to get CS : Source to play immediately before too many newbies get on there and wanted to support Valves content delivery system as despite a very shaky start and a lot of bad mouthing, it seems to have matured into a very good product!

:))

    • My wish list is: A trailer for Final Fantasy VII part 3 and a proper look at Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Not happening, but I'd kill for would be another game of any genre in the Frostpunk world and another game in the Detroit: Become Human world.
    • I tried Wino-Mail and had the same issue with it that I have with New Outlook: My two centurylink.net email accounts (one of which is my primary email account) refuse to work with either one, and sometimes refuse to even log in, even though ALL the relevant information is accurate. Thunderbird does not have this problem, so I'll stick with what works, thank you.
    • For me it has everything feature wise that I want. But boy the app sucks big time. This and Teams. Ever since they made the transition to WebView it has been slow AF. I mostly use both apps in the browser now because of too much memory being used by these 2 apps. Hoping that native versions are being worked upon.
    • Nearly 70% of Steam users now run Windows 11 by Taras Buria The May 2026 Steam Hardware & Software Survey results are now available on the official Steam website, showing Windows 11's continuous growth among the gaming audience. As of early June 2026, nearly 70% of all participants reported having a Windows 11-powered PC, while Windows 10's market share is steadily declining. According to Valve, in May 2026, Windows 11 increased its market share to 69.76% (+2.02 points), while Windows 10 dropped to 23.99% (-1.64 points). 64-bit Windows 7 is still showing up in Valve's reports, and apparently, about 0.07% of all survey participants still use the 17-year-old operating system. Valve no longer updates its client for Windows 7, but it still can access the platform, so the Windows 7 holdouts can stay away from newer Windows versions. Overall, 93.85% of all users run Windows (+0.38 points), while Linux is second with 3.99% (-0.53 points). macOS is third with at 2.16% (+0.15 points). The most popular Linux flavor is Arch Linux (0.35%), while macOS 26.4.1 is currently the dominant macOS release. On the hardware side, the most popular picks include an Intel processor (53.94% against AMD's 46.06%) with six cores (28.02%, -0.6 points), 16 GB of memory (41.14%, -0.28 points), and an NVIDIA graphics card (72.42%, with AMD having 19.13% and Intel 8.05%). The most popular graphics card on Steam is the desktop NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 (3.85%, -0.14 points), while the laptop RTX 4060 is second with 3.77%, and the RTX 3050 is third with 3.10%. The average amount of VRAM is 8GB (25.89%), and the dominant display resolution is the classic 1920x1080 pixels (51.89%, -0.32 points). As usual, you can find more details from the latest survey on the official website. The results for April 2026 are available here.
