big releases are ALWAYS overrated.

Agreed. Very, very rarley does a game live up to its hype. The last truely great game was GTA3. That game broke new ground on so many levels.

HL2 will not break new ground - it will be an improvement on HL. It will be what Vice City was to GTA3.

Online, the silver edition gets you the back catalog.

If I buy Halflife 2 dvd rom from play.com for example, do I get any of the back catalog?

hmmm? http://www.play.com/play247.asp?pa=stts2&p...PC&title=119757

edit : Seems like there is a retail cd edition, with 6 cd's which does not contain the back catalog. Can't find it for sale anywhere.

HL2 Cost me nothing :D I got a voucher with my ATi card back in December last year, I wasn't going to use it, rather I was going to purchase the phyisical media to get around the whole "steam" crap. But after I heard that I didn't really have much choice in the matter I went ahead and preloaded/activated it anyway

(Yes I could have sent off to ATi for the phyical media but the wait was 8/10 weeks..........No way would I wait :p)

This activation of the retail edition is seriously ****ing me off! I'm going home for the holidays where we have no internet connection because I've moved away for uni, I'm getting the game for giftmas and bringing home my pc to play it! NOW I find out this bullsh*t Valve should accomdate to this unique situation as I'm sure there'll be someone else out there in the world who'll suffer from the retardation of having to activate a single player game that you just paid alot of money for.

Well if your taking your PC with you to play it just turn round and go look folks is it ok if i conect it to the phone for literally 5 mins to authenticate this game, look heres the box to even show you it requires it. I,ll happily pay $5 to the phone bill for my use.

Then use a quick by the minute isp account youve made from your pc before going home

Maybe they were betting and basing their online activation on the fact that all of the people who gave their system specs in the survey also have internet lines.

I would imagine the activation on steam is valves bargaining chip against vivendi.

Vivendi threatened to delay the release of the game by another 6 months, so valve built in the activation to allow them to threaten the same back.

/k

Inferno, Not necessessarily though.

There will be a very small percentage of people who can get online at some point in their life, but not always on their own computer. For example, they frequent an internet cafe, but have no line at home to get on.

But, yes, we are talking a very small percentage. Maybe, Valve are willing to lose this percentage of customers.

Same argument goes for browser support in IT. Do you do the extra work for small perentage of users, or do you lose them?

WARNING - Dumb question alert!

If I purchase HL2 via steam, will I be able to download it & get a boxed version mailed to me? Or, is Steam a download only thype thing?

i belive its only a download thing. not too sure though.

Well, of course he's upset.  He needs to play the engine which he will announce he will be shifting his "game" to!

But seriously, all you ever hear from Broussard is about what game he's been playing at the moment.  And you wonder why he'll never finish that damned DNF.

LOL So True!! HAHAHA!

I decided to make a small auto player for when I burn my Steam Files to backup. Im going to put in a certain folder structure with a Steam install client , along with all my gcf files onto a dvd so I have that backup just in case once HL2 launches something happens.

Anyways heres what Im making if anyone is interested in a release then PM me or lemme know here.

Obviosuly a few options require Steam installed but, I know that lol.

    • The current Statcoungter desktop numbers has Google Chrome increasing it's market share this past year and currently commanding 75% share. Everybody else is just making up the numbers with even MS Edge losing 3% this past year and has dipped just below 10% share which is staggering considering it's default on every Windows deviced purchased. If these numbers are correct that terrible Edge number is both devastating and embarrassing for MS especially when you add in the terribly low Bing market share. This leads me to ask a couple of questions as the default browser holding just less than 10% market share seems really weird. It used to be that all Chromium browsers were being counted as Google Chrome in some cases.  Is this still happening? Do these high Google Chrome numbers contains some Edge user numbers?
    • Yeah, all web browsers seem to have some junk in them these days. The regular Brave browser has a lot of unnecessary stuff in it, similar to Microsoft Edge, so I don't see any benefits of using Brave over Microsoft Edge if you already have Microsoft Edge fully set up with adblockers and that. The cleanest or best free browser outside of 'Microsoft Edge' I’ve tried so far is 'Opera Air'. It still has some bloat, but nowhere near as much as Brave browser, for example. I also really like the web browser called 'Floorp' that is based on Firefox. I have a system wide Adblocking program for Windows 11 that doesn't just blocks ads in the the web browser, but over the whole thing. I don't really need a web browser with an inbuilt adblocker because of that.
    • I have been using Firefox for years.
    • I'd trust open source stuff on github more then closed source binaries from Microsoft.
