[DEFINITIVE] Half-Life 2 Thread

Recommended Posts

I just bought and finished it yesterday and must say that this by far the most aggravating game I have ever played.

I'd spend up to 30 minutes on each level trying to figure out where the hell I'm suppose to go. Now I wasn't really a fan of Doom 3 but after playing HL2 have to say that Doom 3 was way better in terms of figuring out what to do and how to do it. HL1 was far better in figuring out what to do and where to go, and also had the better storyline.

And D3 had a much better story line, I didn't get any of HL2. I hope the new version of Sven will come out to save this game for me. I let my little brother have a shot at it today and unfourtunately he's having path finding problems also.

I however will play it through a second time now that I am more familiar with the game, should go a bit better. Will give it an extra star because of better gameplay second time around. One thing I will say that's good, It sure does run buttery smooth!. D3 also runs pretty smooth but not like HL2.

*** out of ***** stars.

"the most aggravating game ever"

Sodapop :(

Path finding problems?

Most of the time you can't help but go the right way, and you've got people saying stuff.

I'm really sorry, but if you played through halflife 1 and have the mental capacity to do so, how exactly did you get lost?

Show some screen shots of places you got lost and honestly didn't have a clue where to go.

Of course, it wasn't meant to be an on-rails shooter, but it wasn't exactly a maze.

Thats not pathfinding. Pathfinding problems mean that computer controlled allies/opponents are having a hard time moving around on the map and keep getting stuck on things.

When I first played through the game, there was a lot I missed too, and a lot of places I got stuck on. The thing is, it was always something obvious I missed in the first place, totally my fault. I agree that if you could play through half-life 1 then this game should be pretty easy in terms of puzzle solving and such.

I have to say its pretty linear, but occasionally (especially when there are enemies having fun trying to headshoot you) things can get very confusing. Occasionally.

Anyway the teammate AI is crap at best. Once there was this platoon of Combine in front of me,and my allies standing wouldnt even shoot at em. they would just stand there gun held up saying "Sorry Dr.Freeman / Excuse me Dr.Freeman". They should count themselves lucky coz friendly fire isnt turned on or I would have shot their asses to hell.

Okay, I finally finished the game last night. I am terribly slow considering I got it on Steam the first day it was released.

The AI

First off, I quoted this quote because I could not agree more about the AI. I know Valve wanted to show off their face technology and all of that, but for the most part (except a rare occasion or 2 where they actually did shoot at the enemy) the AI was just always in my way. I usually led them to their deaths on purpose (i.e. not getting rid of the turret guns first and watching them all get mowed down) just so I did not have to put up with them. The only useful AI was Dog, Alyx, and Barney. All the other ones I enjoyed watching them die, which is not a good way to promote the "squad" feel Valve was going for.

The Ending...

I am torn. I actually think the Citadel is the coolest level from a game design and look and feel aspect I have ever seen, period, but it was just terribly to easy. The part I enjoyed the most actually was being in the "pod" just traveling around looking at everything, and also grabbing the energy balls and firing them was amazing, but other than that it was just to easy. Then the whole cliffhanger ending thing, it is cool because I know there is going to be a HL3, but it does also leave me saying "so that is actually the ending."

An absolutely brilliant game overall, in fact it is the best FPS I have ever played personally, but it did have some truly frustrating aspects and moments.

Still, bring on HL3, and hopefully there is no Squad ;)

In the fact , I Dont coming there is HL3?

Gordon Freeman Did his mission

gordon comes only when he needs to things be done

but everything is done? or i dont get it

It's in the words the g-man uses, and in the way he says it.

It's the same rule in the movies, if the main character is alive, and there's no reason to not have a sequel, then we'll have one.

edit : I can't spell sequel.

I actually love playing with squad. That's why I liked Opposing force so much. The bad thing is that I can't order them around. I just wish I could order them to wait while I kill turrets or something. It ****es me off when they run to their death and I can't do anything about it.

I'd just like to say that IMHO HL2 was pitched at just the right difficulty level in terms of working out what to do and where to go. Doom 3 was very linear and it was obvious what needed to be done. In HL2, there were quite a few occasions where I got stuck and I had to really think about what to do next. This really added to the gaming experience of HL2, IMHO. By far the best game I've ever played in my whole life... except perhaps Hidden & Dangerous 2! :)

On the subject of irritating player AI, I actually found the AI of the Sand Lions to be better than that of the human characters who help you out! The Sand Lions knew when to get out of the way, etc and didn't get in your way.. and none of that annoying "Sorry Gordan!" or "Excuse me Doctor Freeman" - JUST GET OUT OF THE WAY! :)

Well excuse me for not being a genius at figuring out how the hell to get out of cirtian level's.

I didn't mean to cause offence. It's generally felt that the puzzles and the route through is about the same sort of difficulty as in halflife 1.

So that's why I said, if you can do halflife 1, then I think it's odd that you had trouble with HL2.

Sorry.

ok, i finished the game 2 days back, mostly due to work i cannot play as much as i would like to, and i have to say:

AMAZING.

for those that had trouble following the route through, either i was just lucky, or it made "sense" to me where to go. i never had a problem, and felt i was working my way the only way i could go.

i actually hated the combine, and loved taking them out. i felt a sense of accomplishment as it went along, something i haven't felt since Half Life. Farcry came close, but was too difficult at the end (to me).

i know some peeps hated the ending, i just take it as someone said: ANOTHER SEQUEL BABY!

valve did an excellent job - as did the makers of Doom3. Doom3 just bored me as it was too cramped. i hated that sensation.

now, i just bought battle for middle earth, and war began this morning. woot! using gandalf to fight balrogs rocks!

ripped :woot:

Okay, I finally finish the game last night!

I was switching between World of Warcraft and Half-Life 2.

All I can say is that this was the best FPS in a looooong time, the game felt like a movie, even the ending. Thought the ending was to short but there are hints of exciting things for Half-Life 3!

Sad to say that I saw the G-Man only once when I was playing, guess I need to play again to see how many times he actually pops-up.

This was worth $49.95 and I give Valve and its team, two thumbs up!

    • The current Statcoungter desktop numbers has Google Chrome increasing it's market share this past year and currently commanding 75% share. Everybody else is just making up the numbers with even MS Edge losing 3% this past year and has dipped just below 10% share which is staggering considering it's default on every Windows deviced purchased. If these numbers are correct that terrible Edge number is both devastating and embarrassing for MS especially when you add in the terribly low Bing market share. This leads me to ask a couple of questions as the default browser holding just less than 10% market share seems really weird. It used to be that all Chromium browsers were being counted as Google Chrome in some cases.  Is this still happening? Do these high Google Chrome numbers contains some Edge user numbers?
    • Yeah, all web browsers seem to have some junk in them these days. The regular Brave browser has a lot of unnecessary stuff in it, similar to Microsoft Edge, so I don't see any benefits of using Brave over Microsoft Edge if you already have Microsoft Edge fully set up with adblockers and that. The cleanest or best free browser outside of 'Microsoft Edge' I’ve tried so far is 'Opera Air'. It still has some bloat, but nowhere near as much as Brave browser, for example. I have a system wide Adblocking program for Windows 11 that doesn't just blocks ads in the the web browser, but over the whole thing. I don't really need a web browser with an inbuilt adblocker because of that.
    • I have been using Firefox for years.
    • I'd trust open source stuff on github more then closed source binaries from Microsoft.
