On the 21st of November 2005 Windows XP will be 3 years old... I would not even bother or even contemplate creating another SP for Windows XP.

A life span of an OS is around about 3 to 5 years at the most... some will go on longer if they keep the OS up to date with ever changing technology.. Windows XP SP2 was a total whitewash and an abortion at that.

The security centre made things even worse... home owners who do not know what ActiveX.com is let alone what it means and they had added this as though every single End User will know what it actually does let alone means. So when you go to a website and you download ActiveX do you actually know what you?re downloading and what SPYWARE in being installed on your system because you said YES to download without even thinking first??

The only update I can see Microsoft doing if they bring out another SP for Windows XP and that would be to add a lot of features from Longhorn to Windows XP including MSIE7 (which is being renamed fro Longhorn for some reason) to this aging OS and put a new brave face back on this degrading OS which has lost popularity since day one.

Their popularity is dropping because of Firefox which I would estimate about 93% now? Microsoft will endeavour to come out with something to win back the customers to Windows XP and another worthless SP for Windows XP is not going to make them top of the list again unless it?s something the public actually want?

Microsoft is going to have to make some massive changes to Windows XP to win back the customers?

The OS has a life until another one is made. So even if Longhorn comes out before SP3 it doesn't really matter because it will take awhile for people to upgrade from XP to Longhorn as it did when XP came out with compability issuses and such.

There are ways to get rid of Spyware and Microsoft are never going to bundle competetive software in their Service Packs as far as im concerened as I dont see that really being a very good business strategy. Longhorn is what the Windows based community want but upgrades for any OS are welcome by its users.

One problem with SP2 I've found is with some USB devices.

My grphics tablet no longer works after installing SP2 (still works under linux though) and also I have Psion Wavefinder USB DAB device that doesn't work either.

Have been looking for solutions / updated drivers etc. but there is nothing.

The only fix there appears to be is by replaceing the USB drivers with win2k USB drivers.

erm, Windows XP will have been av4 years>4 yOctober 25, 200525, 2005, as it was released 10/25/01 (RTM in August 2001). I would actually expect 2-3 more service packs for XP, one before Longhorn's release, and 1 or 2 after it. The average lifespan is much longer than 3-5 years, more like 5-7.

Although XP may never get another "service pack" it will probably be rolled into "Update rollups" which MS tend to like to release now. Nevertheless SP3 IS being compiled at the moment, work never stops on any chain of software @ MS whether it's office/windows/encarta etc they always start compiling the next release v.early. Obviously in the early stages (alpha) it rarely changes significantly from the previous version.

      Nothing is stopping you from continuing with your testing cadence. If updates are released every 2 weeks instead of 4, and you test once every 4 weeks, the exact same amount of patches will still be available for you in those 4 weeks. For example: Before 4th week - patch 1, 2, 3, 4 After 2nd week - patch 1 and 2 4th week - patch 3 and 4 Still the same amount after 4.

      Everyone else has said it. I'm gonna say it - you don't know what you're talking about. I do. I have two laptops. One work, one personal. I have access to two more laptops - both personal. At home I manually update my personal laptop when I see on Neowin that there is an update - I carry on and only apply the updates when I am ready. My work one only updates when my workplace decides to send it - I carry on and only apply the updates (when they actually arrive, which is usually days after the release) when I switch off the laptop at the end of the day as usual. The two other personal laptops only get updated when I get to it which is rarely - the people who own them carry on using them until I get to it and update them. All of the browsers on all laptops are configured to restore the tabs when launched. Google and Microsoft have changed from 6 weeks to 4, and it looks like it's going to move to 2. None of these changes affect how any of these browsers on the laptops are used. Not one jot. My advice to you is stop panicking whenever you see an update. Just carry on with what you're doing. This even benefits you in a way - from your comment you sound like you don't like the changes or the frivolous new features - great - then carry on as before!
