But I really don't have any idea where you live. Around here everything is Pop/Soft Rock/Rock. Last I checked MTV is Pop based with some Rock, R&B and the occational Ja Rule. Then again, I don't watch TRL, but by glancing at their website the names that pop up are:

Ashanti [R&B]

Aerosmith [Rock]

Vanessa Carlton [Pop]

Korn [Rock]

Usher [R&B]

Sheryl Crow [Rock]

Enrique Iglesias [Pop]

Layne Staley

J.Lo [Pop]

Papa Roach [Rock]

Moby [Just weird]

Yes the following names pop up:

Nas, Ja Rule, Ludacris and Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes [only because of her recent death]. But if you notice...they are more "Pop" Rap artists.

I don't think MTV satisfies anyone except those who prefer Pop.

And, from what I've noticed around here, you do not hear Rap in the streets or on the Radio. It's Rock. The radio stations around here play: Pop/Soft Rock/Rock/80s/Country/Classical. There isn't any room for Rap. The only time, and I mean only time I hear it in the streets is when I'm driving down the road and it's coming out of my own car stereo.

I'm not trying to say Rock is bad or anything at all like that. I listen to my fair share of most everything. I just dislike the blanket stereotypes and have a hard time knowing when to keep my mouth shut. I appologize if I came off as rude or attacking.

But I'm way off topic.

I have no favorite album. It's too hard to pick favorites. I'm not really fond of Metallica either. Some of their old stuff is okay, but I'd rather listen to something else

well, it's unfortunate to people that like your kind of music that that crock is played out and MTV as well as a lot of other radio/tv stations put forth more effort to appeal to the younger teenage/early twenties crowd of people and in this new age no one really likes all that bull**** screaming yelling ****ing on crowds ODing on coke and smack and goofy looking hair type music where you cant play any of that at the wild MTV parties they always throw...no one really wants to ride down their street in a cool looking car blasting some gay **** like that ya know?

they need uppity type beat stuff that you can have fun to at parties..not **** that will bust your ear drums.

and unfortunately for you pop and rap is where it is at

im not a really big pop fan but i'd rather listen to that than people yelling about dying and drugs while shaking their green hair and rubbing their skinny anorexic "god-like" tattooed up bodies while strumming a guitar.

I've got digital cable. All we have in way of music is straight music channels. It isn't videos, it's just music with song information on the screen. But they do have hundreds of channels of every different type of music you could possible like. MTV isn't the only place for music videos, however, I have to agree. We don't get any of the other music channels [bET, MuchMusic, etc] here either. Except VH1

You obviously missed the point in my former post.  It had less to do with race than to do with fitting in.  Who's to say people listen to one genre of music over another because they want to fit in?  And therefore, if one would listen to rap over rock to fit in, whos to say they wont listen to rock over rap to fit in?  Or Punk, or Techno, or Pop?

Every genre has it's bad aspects, it's just that Rap in general is beyond stupid. I'm not comparing the worst of each and going from there...I get the impression that you are.

Fact is Rap has nothing to say any more, Tupac and old Nas.. as well as P.E. & old Wu Tang to a lesser extent were the ones with something to say now every rap song is interchangeable and the beats aren't even original. In some cases they just jack a beat from an older popular Rap song and throw some more meaningless lyrics over it.

It's is a manufactured product just like many crappy( ____ <---insert genre here) acts. They don't even play instruments.. a vital part in being a good musician. Now I know the obvious retort to that well Sinatra didn't play an instrument.. and yes that's true that's why he was a singer and not musician.

"Cold Outside" by Ludacris (who has a great voice and really good diction for a rapper of todays era) is a good song that conveys the message without him saying a word, and when he does he doesn't rap about stupid nonsense and ruin it.

When was the last time rap moved you to think about something or evoked a strong emotion in you? Do you pick up different aspects of the "instrumentals"/lyrics everytime you listen to a song? Give me the name of the song and artist cause I'd like to give it a listen.

I think that some of what you say has validity. All genres of music go through lulls, and true, Rap has gone through a creative lull for a couple of years now. Virtually, the only Rap getting any hype is commercialized crap. Funny how Rap used to be this dangerous music and it has become so homogenized and safe. But Rock has gone through this too. Late '80's Rock was typified by meaningless hair bands and sickeningly sweet power ballads. An album known as Nevermind by this Seattle group called Nirvana changed that. You remember Nirvana right?

Nirvana and that "Seattle Sound" made rock dangerous and vital again and led to a busting down of the doors that gave birth to a whole slew of great new bands. That's what Rap needs. A Rap Nirvana that shakes the foundations and allows for a different sound, a new way of thinking about the genre. It's also easy to see that Rock is starting to fall asleep again, some would probably argue that it is already asleep and needs a new Nirvana to take it by the collar and shake it around a bit. It's not in the desperate place Rap is, but it is getting there.

I don't believe that simply because someone plays an instrument, it justifies their talent. The artist I named earlier, RZA, is the man behind the Wu-Tang's sound and i would strongly argue with you that RZA isn't talented. Everytime I hear RZA's sampling, I'm reminded of a genius in the Jazz world called Thelonious Monk. Thelonious used a disjointed sound in his music to create some of the best music of the be-bop era. To me, RZA is the Thelonious of Rap.

I think that a lot of what you say about Rap currently is true. At least what is played commercially. I've heard some underground bands that sound really impressive, including a few who have for the most part left sampling behind and who play instruments. I'm not talking of Rock/Rap hybrids, but unfortunately these guys aren't being heard in mainstream music but maybe one of them might be Rap's Nirvana.

Tool moves me everytime I listen to any of their music.

and Soundgarden to a lesser extent.

We are tlaing about things on two different levels here.. your saying common topics of songs.. nothing original you can find a song about domestic violence, death of loved one, love gone wrong etc. in any genre.

No one in music delves into things like Tool does.

Those songs also are really generic in my humble opinion. They don't even explore the isssues in an innovative way.

That's fine to each his own, but it's not for me.

BTW I'm not trying to act condescending sorry if it comes off that way.

I hear what your saying.. A guy like Mos Def or Outkast come to mind when you talk about a revolutionaries in the genre. They have their own styles and don't just rap about the same old stuff everyone else does.

BTW I don't know where you got that I think that just because you play an instrument you have talent... anyone can play an instrument.. it just takes practice... to play it well and innovatively that's special.

Also we are talking about the current rap scene, in all of my posts I gave credit to "older" guys who I felt were good.

Well it is coming off that way. Yes, you can find similar topics accross genres, but you asked for a few songs, and I named them. Perhaps you can't find "hooker with a penis" in any other genre...but when you listen to the words...there are songs in other genres that cover that gap.

All I'm trying to say is that you cant make stereotypical comments about large groups and be correct about it. You can't say "all ______ sucks." Nor should you.

That is my point. Not that Rap is better than Rock or that Rock is better than Rock or that all you hear is Pop Rap or ...

I'm just asking that people don't stereotype. Is that so wrong?

I dunno the more I think about this the more I see that we are arguing the same side of the coin. Every artist should be evauluated individually. Most bands today absolutely suck compared to older stuff.. Doors, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Hendrix etc. but there are a few that I feel are up ther with them Tool, Soundgarden etc.

Same can be said for rap: Tupac, P.E. (even though I don't like them) Wu Tang, Nas. Today Nas is still around and there a couple others like Mos Def, Outkast that carry on in the same independent train of thought.

All the guys I mentioned above seem to have created their own genre and really shouldn't be placed in with the rest of the crap out there.
