Well it is coming off that way.  Yes, you can find similar topics accross genres, but you asked for a few songs, and I named them.  Perhaps you can't find "hooker with a penis" in any other genre...but when you listen to the words...there are songs in other genres that cover that gap.

All I'm trying to say is that you cant make stereotypical comments about large groups and be correct about it.  You can't say "all ______ sucks."  Nor should you.

That is my point.  Not that Rap is better than Rock or that Rock is better than Rock or that all you hear is Pop Rap or ...

I'm just asking that people don't stereotype.  Is that so wrong?

-------------

"Opinions are like a**holes.  Everyone has one..and everyone thinks everyone else's stinks"

I wasn't thinking of "Hooker with a penis" at the time when I wrote the stuff but it's a perfect example of what I was trying to illustrate. Yes other people have written songs about "selling out" etc but no one I ever heard put that spin on it and took on that persona.

Also alot of this problem is I don't but the good "rappers" into the category of "rap" (as I said earlier) so to me all "rap" is absolute

crap. I don't talk about Ja Rule for example in the same breathe as Tupac..

As I posted earlier we are arguing the same thing really.. and It isn't fair for me to assume that you know the way I think about this topic since I don't know you :)

I should have been more clear in the begining.

Flaw- Through The Eyes

Hendrix is awesome...

Also I haven't heard much of the Flaw album but the song "Whole" is an absolutely great song. The other song I hear "Payback" was one of the stupidiest songs I had heard in a long time... dunno have to listen to the album I guess :)

I dunno the more I think about this the more I see that we are arguing the same side of the coin. Every artist should be evauluated individually. Most bands today absolutely suck compared to older stuff.. Doors, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Hendrix etc. but there are a few that I feel are up ther with them Tool, Soundgarden etc.

Same can be said for rap: Tupac, P.E. (even though I don't like them) Wu Tang, Nas. Today Nas is still around and there a couple others like Mos Def, Outkast that carry on in the same independent train of thought.

All the guys I mentioned above seem to have created their own genre and really shouldn't be placed in with the rest of the crap out there.

I pretty much agree with this statement. Especially that to a certain extent, we are both arguing the same argument. ;)

About P.E. it's hard to define how influential they were to Rap's early development, or to point out to those who weren't around what they meant to music in general (by this, i'm not saying you, but there are those who don't understand). They were who made me a listener of rap. Nation of Millions came out in '88, if i remember right, and there wasn't much to listen to then. A lot of rock was crap, rap was party rap with the same sound. Nation of millions had such a unique "sound" that it pointed rappers in another direction, showed them they didn't have to sample old songs to be successful, and it showed rockers like myself that rap wasn't a passing fad, wasn't going away, and had something to say. It was also prophetic, foretelling the social unrest that was coming in the US in the early to mid 90's.

Again, i'm not saying you don't know this, but there might be some reading this who don't know.

One other thing, Tool has been mentioned quite a few times in this thread. I just wanted to add that i couldn't agree more with the thoughts expressed about them. Sober was one of the best songs of the past few years. Truly a great band and one who quite possibly has their best days ahead of them, at least I hope.

Am I the only person who thinks DJ Shadow's Endtroducing is god's gift to man? :D

Whoa, didn't know anyone else even knew about this one. I remember one time a friend asked about what kind of music it was after he overheard me talking about it and my response went something like this:

"Well, it's ahhh...um...It's kinda like...err....I mean...uhh...it's closest too...umm...man, you're just gonna have to listen to it."

yeah, it's trip hop-ish, but sorta not...

have you had a change to hear The Private Press? It's gods 2nd gift to man! :D

KBS, I am a rascist, as are you, everyone is. I would call myself more biast more then rascist tho. I have many hispanic and black friends, hell my best friend is black. And I don't dislike rap, just dislike rap of today. I own every NWA album, two eazy E albums and snoop and dre's first solo albums. Classified as 'Gangsta Rap', and they all have one other thing in common, its west coast rap. It never got better then that, all from the late 80's and early 90's. Like I said, after 2pac - All Eyez on Me it went down hill.

Moonspell - Wolfheart (best damn gothic metal album ever)

Moonspell - Irreligious (best damn gothic/Doom metal bybrid album ever)

Tool - Aenima (best damn progressive rock album ever)

Cradle of Filth - Cruelty and the deast (best damn Vampire metal album ever)

A Perfect Circle - Mer de noms (best mellow rock album ever)

Daemonarch - Corpus Hermeticum (best damn Black Metal album ever)

Linkin Park - Hybrid theory (best damn CORPORATE MTV CRAP album ever) sh*t I just hate them just as much as papa roach

The problem with DJ Shadow is that it's music that defies description. Yeah, it's trip hop, sort of. It's Funk, sort of. It's Jazz, sort of. It is certainly hypnotic and different ;)

No, i haven't heard The Private Press. Have to keep an eye out for that one.
