Okay here, I'll be the guy to do it:

Can we please regualte what the sigs look like? Some people take this thing way too far. For example, check out the "May sigs" thread. My goodness. The sigs are huge. this is not just for people who are still on dial up, but just for the aestetics of the site.

If you agree, vote accordingly in the poll.

If you disagree, vote accordingly in the poll.

Maybe we can influence the mods to make a change here. Or if I am in the minority, then to keep everything status quo

(I am still awaiting the Jar-Jar Binks sig.)

i do like sigs. a lot. they are cool and very much add to what can be a boring look thread. plus they add some personality to things.

however, 400x900 sig sizes (if you include text) are useless. the make scrolling down the page a bitch. the make the page take more memory and can fubar with things...

note to redmak: there are vb hacks to check sig size. i'm sure I could code you up something as well, (reading image sizes isn't that hard actually...). but look around vb.org for it, i remember seeing something about it...

I agree, while I finally caved in and created an image sig, I used Timdorr's new one (maybe it hypnotized me into doing it :s ) for a size template so mine wouldn't be too big. However some of the image sigs are way too big and really don't add anything to the posts, threads, or even the site except for bandwidth and page length.

I think this has been brought up before and nothing seems to have been done, but maybe Neobond or Redmak will step up the plate (err yeah) and do whatever.

Captain Hoagie's sig is not big at all. I'm on Dial-up and it downloads fast enough. I think that someone in here is still using 800x600 on their 15" monitor :p

Seriously, I don't view his sig as too big. Look at mine. I think that mine might be better off a little smaller (Shorter at least) but it's still not enough to kill people's viewing experience. What irritates ME is people posting 1600x1200 screenshot of their desktop WITHIN the post! :ermm: If I see a sig too big, it's because there's more of it on the screen than posts themselves.

edit:

ACK! My sig isn't being hosted anymore! Anybody got hard drive space for rent? :dead:

edit2:

Thanks TimDorr, you rock!

A few points:

1. The mods are already on the lookout for HUGE sigs and will be removing them AS THEY SEE THEM. If you see a huge sig, PM a mod about it. There was a thread made not too long ago about this and the mods did say they were on the hunt.

http://neowin.net/bboard/showthread.php?s=...&threadid=19486

2. Though no specific size has been set, I think the mods, or whomever, should come up with a max height/max width (maybe max size as well). This will help with the reports to mods on "huge" sigs. (you can easily see the size of an image by RIGHT CLICK --> PROPERTIES in IE)

3. As mentioned, there is always the option to turn them off in the control panel. As well as avatars.

4. I really like making these lists of points. Can you tell? :D I'm so very organized.

Damn signature Nazi's!

Here's my next poll;

Should people with less than a DSL connection should be banned from Neowin?

a.) Yes, because they hate big sigs!

b.) No, because I pity them.

c.) Screw everyone!

Turn off sig's if you dont want to see the sigs. i downloaded over 300MB from Macromedia in under 15 min this morning, so what you consider big is nothing to some of us.

Maybe instead of me being considerate of you, you should be considerate of me?

Just thinking about this...no flames, just thoughts!

Good point deadzombie, but in this case it really doesn't work that way... at least it shouldn't.

It's not just about the image file size, but also about the dimensions of the image. Some of them are larger than the post itself.

We don't have to do all this, but it is the considerate thing to do.

Well, I understand, and used to agree, with your point.

But I run my res at 1600x1200. My hardware, that i worked hard to get, handles that res no problem.

I do get tired at times scaling back for those that don't have better hardware or better connectioons...when they can just turn it off.

And I've almost always scaled myself back for those that couldnt keep up...but to actually start a poll trying to limit sigs...damn, Im all for full fledged multi media interactive sigs...anything else is just holding up the progress of the internet.

So I say, with a smile and good intentions.."KEEP UP OR TURN IT OFF!"

Thank you, just my opinion. ;)

This is "...exactly....." the type of thing that I think is being talked about. You quoted fifteen lines of text, replied with one word (oh, but can't forget the periods) and then tossed in a sig image which is over 500 pixels wide. If all you really wanted to do was voice your agreement, then why not simply cast your vote in the poll and let that be that? "Me too" posts are the absolute worst types of posts in most types of forums, and when the signature is longer than what you say in your message, it brings the "me too" posts to an all-time low.

Of course, all this is just my opinion...whatever floats your boat.

Firstly, yes we are looking out for large sigs. It would make our job much easier if you would report any you consider inappropriate. This may be because they are too big, are pornographic, or are just plain offensive.

As a rule of thumb, i think they should be no larger than 400 x 190 pixels. Any larger is really pushing it. Of course, smaller will be greatly preferred.

File size, try to keep it around 40kb at a maximum. No larger than that.

As for content considered inappropriate:

  • Too large, or file size exceeds recommended size
  • Pornographic or offensive images, language etc. This may include racist remarks, slander etc..
  • If the sig is overly distracting, ie. bright flashing colors (timdorr:P ), animated sigs (ie gifs)
  • Your sigs may not advertise a competing site, or alternative to neowin. This has been an issue lately. Staff are aware of it and will take action against any offending sigs we may see.
  • And of course, do not contain links to, or use your sig to link to pages that contain objectionable material. This includes, warez, crackz, pornography etc...

I think the above guidelines are quite reasonable and there should be no reason why anyone here can not follow these.

In the meantime, if sigs are such a problem for you, then yes, the option is there to turn them off so make use of it.

Again though, help us out too. If you see something inappropriate, let us know and we will deal with it asap.

Thanx guys & gals

~Keldyn - neowin.net

I think oversized images in sigs do need to be moderated yes.. but like most things here you can either keep it on or turn it off via usercp.

People who have sigs disabled never have to deal with them but people who do have them enabled need to understand that not everyone has the same taste or expectations (or bandwidth) you do. There are some butt ugly sigs here, but there are also VERY nice ones.. So.. me personally? I weigh the good against the bad and keep them enabled (I have to Im a mod :p) but you get what I mean.

if ppl would try to make 'em wider rather than taller it would be better.

Agreed, I don't care if it is like 800 px long, but when they start getting over 300px high, that's what's annoying.

Filesize isn't an issue, just the additional scrolling.

In addition, Google for years have been making where it can patch some stuff by updating the core Google Play Store itself.  As echoed earlier,  you take the security risk in to your own hand beyond supported.
