Messenger concept

Question

Do not post here with just negative comments, at least tell me how i can improve it constructively and i will, if i can.

As soon as the exclusive concept art of the new MSN Wave-11 was posted on front page, I knew that i had to look, once i saw it, i was mixed between "EEW BLOAT!" and "OH MY GOD, WONDERFUL"

This is because, the actual MSN program seemed bloated, but they had a nice UI.

So, I decided to quickly put together a little mockup of MSN 8, but not with all the bloat, its like MSN7, with a new look.

Here it is:

Latest version (07-December-2004, 22:07 GMT)

MSN-Messenger-8-v3-r1-both.gif

Credits are on the image.

This took roughly an hour but that mostly involved me listening to music mindlessly,

Alot of the graphics, like the butterfly in top corner and background are actually vectored by me by hand.

note to a friend: paulsachang, rofl. pandas r us. thanks for the comments on it when i was making it, also varsity, thanks for the comments on it too:)

i am still waiting for anyone who wants to code a new instant messaging client,

i am thinking of something along the lines of "you host and people join" which elimninates the need for proper servers.

i will do the gfx, i can do minimal, bloated, shiny, pretty much anything, any layout too.

if anyone could code a whole new messenger program (NOT based off msn)

we could have all the freedom we want, i would do our gfx.

I don't want to troll that much, but Miranda IM is a nice messenger program. The MSN protocol has most MSN features, like avatar support etc.

Since version 0.4 (soon to been released) the contact list is split to an external DLL, giving it the same status as any other plugin in Miranda. You could easily create or modify the current contact list to include the things you want. This is actually a lot easier than making a complete new client.

is the user inteface completely customisable?,

thing is, if someone DID make a whole new client that didnt run off msn at all, we would have the source and could do what we want.

Miranda is open source (GPL), MSN plugin is also open source, you can take a look at all the sources.

It is not so much that the interface is completely customisable, it is that it is a plugin. You can also look at the source of that. The program offers some 'services' so you can get contact, open message window etc. You could make any UI you want, but you have to program it, not GUI hacking. The interface is written in C, so it have to also write it in C. Maybe you could find someone who could do the C programming, and you do the GUI part.

Post something in the miranda forums, maybe someone will respond.

I can help with hosting it.

GHL.. major thumbs up to you for producing such a great concept!

2 personal things I would like to see is:

Transparency

&

(If possible) the ability to change the colour of the main contact list and so on.. Like if you had option to colour mixer so you could make it a user preferred colour..

I really like the logo/icon you created man.. it looks really good.

Best of luck, and I would really like to see this take off.. it has unlimited potential.

Good work bro.

Yeah we need to put our heads together and create a customizable instant messenger that doesn't bug up your system and gets alot of downloads.

"Look out billy boy here we come lol"

Ok maybe not but anyway nice designs there fella,

Chris

P.s If anyone thinks they can put together a team i'd help :p

It was posted on Mess.be, but was quickly removed, luckily I downloaded it before then, and edited out the stupid Mess.be logo that took up most the screen, and changed the background from some flower scene. I'll bet any money it's real, otherwise it wouldn't have been takin' down so quickly. I've got a 1024x768 version, good quality.

coding a messenger client from scratch would be very long

especially a server based one

i think it would be definatly easier to skin either miranda or trillian

or write a program to simply connect to the messenger service

if you are interested i have some code but its in VB

Yea, why can't we make a skin for msn, it will be easier to do..

Plus it will be faster to build.. :D

    • Password Safe 3.72.0 by Razvan Serea Password Safe is a password database utility. Like many other such products, commercial and otherwise, it stores your passwords in an encrypted file, allowing you to remember only one password (the "safe combination"), instead of all the username/password combinations that you use. Once stored, your user names and passwords are just a few clicks away. Using Password Safe you can organize your passwords using your own customizable references—for example, by user ID, category, web site, or location. You can choose to store all your passwords in a single encrypted master password list (an encrypted password database), or use multiple databases to further organize your passwords (work and home, for example). And with its intuitive interface you will be up and running in minutes. PasswordSafe was originally designed by the renowned security technologist Bruce Schneier and released as a free utility application. Password Safe 3.72.0 changelog: Fixed bugs Improved font scale handling - should resolve font size issues on high resolution displays. GH1749 In the Master Password Setup window, "Show Master Password" is no longer truncated on some displays. GH1092, SF1595 Size and position of main window is now correctly restored on scaled displays. SF1630 Keep password expiry date when both password and password expiry are changed; don't clear a non-recurring expiry when the password's changed. SF1628 Custom values can now be copied to the clipboard in read-only mode via Ctrl-C and right-click->Copy Value. New features GH1196 Dark display mode support: Password Safe now supports the system display mode, as well as setting the mode directly via Manage->Options->Display->Display Mode. This change also updates the general "look & feel" of the app to the current Windows theme. Known limitations: The Date picker and keyboard shortcut controls do not switch to dark theme The Customize Toolbar dialog does not switch to dark theme Custom Field support has been added to the more advanced features: Filters XML and Text import and export Comparison, Sync and Merge databases SF938 Custom field values may now be selected by name and copied via a "Copy Custom Field Value..." submenu in the entry context popup menu. SF936 Notes and Custom fields layout now overlap, selectable by tabs, resulting in a more compact and less cluttered layout. SF935 Autotype: Specifying '\v{name}' in the autotype text will cause the corresponding value to be autotyped. • I've got a SoundBlasterX G6 that I use in my streaming setup. Sounds great to me and I've had zero issues with the ancient software package so far in Win11. That G6 has 7.1, Dolby, fully working SPDIF and since it's a USB device it's outside of my rig so I don't have to worry about EMF distortion. Looks like for now this is a pass for me as I think I have better hardware....
