Alabama Judge at it again

Recommended Posts

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A judge refused to delay a trial Tuesday when an attorney objected to his wearing a judicial robe with the Ten Commandments embroidered on the front in gold.

Circuit Judge Ashley McKathan showed up Monday at his Covington County courtroom in southern Alabama wearing the robe. Attorneys who try cases at the courthouse said they had not seen him wearing it before. The commandments were described as being big enough to read by anyone near the judge.

McKathan told The Associated Press that he believes the Ten Commandments represent the truth "and you can't divorce the law from the truth. ... The Ten Commandments can help a judge know the difference between right and wrong."

Alabama Judge's New Clothes

Besides undermining the core values of this nation (Freedom of religion and separation) these judges are starting to think of themselves as avatars of god. Let me get this straight, you need gold embrodery to know the difference between right and wrong? They should be defrocked at least, imprisoned/executed ideally.

I weep for the future.

I think these "judges" are traitors to the US Constitution and should be dealt with as traitors.

And I am from Alabama the Beautiful...

There's one reason why we don't elect judges.

That's odd more than anything. It's not like I have a shirt embroidered with cliff notes for my job.

That might be handy for an english exam though...

"To be or...", um, just a sec, I need to lift my lapel...

it worked for me on the "parts of the engine" and "how the car engine works" tests in driver's ed

No, but the officials that appoint these judges are elected.  Can't wait for the next Supreme Court justice that is appointed by Jehovahbush.

I thought Cirtuit Court judges were elected in the USA and that Supreme Court judges were appointed?

Ours are hired and fired except for the Supreme Court of Canada that are appointed based on geographical localtion (3 for Quebec, 3 from Ontario, 2 from the east and one from the atlantic provinces).

Especially if you can tell the teacher you can take the test anyway, because you're wearing the "truth".

I think you are correct...but it wouldn't matter in this case since the majority population approves of ten commandment judges.

That's what prompted my original reply that I'm glad that Canadian judges are not elected.

But what would happen if the elected officials in Canada were more conservative (as voted by a changing electorate) ... you may end up with those kind of judges anyway.

Um, I don't think we're communicating properly here.

Judges in Canada are hired by the office of the Ministry of Justice. They are not elected.

Judges in the USA are elected (as far as I know but it might vary by state).

Supreme Court Judges in both countries are appointed by the President/Prime Minister and approved by the Senate/Cabinet.

Oh wonderful, so lets say the defendant is guilty, now the guy gets a pass because this "activist judge" is doing something he knows full well to be a contradiction of seperation of church and state.

Can you say mis-trial? How about civil rights violation?

Okay, so how does the Minitstry of Justice get populated? Are they elected or appointed by the government.

So if the ruling governement changes (becomes conservative) and puts different people in the Ministry of Justice, they may hire judges with a conservate slant...

That was what I was trying to say.

They are?

If they are, it's not by the average person.

I guess it varies by state then.

Except for the actual Minister of Justice, the Ministry of Justice is staffed by non-partisan public officials and there usually is not much turnover from government to government. Sometimes changes in governments bring in new deputy-ministers (the top non-elected position) but not always.

We vote on Judges here in GA.

During town elections, or some other time?

I could be completely oblivious, since I've missed a few local elections. I always figured if you have a long black robe and were willing to wear it in public, they took you.

Let me be the first to tell you, they don't let you in for just having the robe.

If I'm not mistaken I have infact voted for judges.

maybe this'll answer some questions.

scroll down about 3/4 of the way to "Methods of Judicial Selection"

(i didn't read the whole thing, but it looked informative and explained why i have never voted on a judge (i live in Virginia))

    • Waymo recalls self-driving software after cars enter closed freeway work zones by Paul Hill Waymo, the self-driving car maker owned by Alphabet – the parent company of Google –, has recalled some of its fifth-generation Automated Driving Systems (ADS). It did so after some of its cars drove through closed construction zones. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the affected vehicles were capable of driving through a closed freeway construction zone and continuing to drive at speed. The listing on the NHTSA website says that Waymo is currently developing a solution to fix this issue, but in the meantime, freeway driving is being restricted. Waymo will update its ADS software so that vehicles can detect when they can avoid entering construction zones. According to the Safety Recall Report, on April 20, 2026, Waymo’s Field Safety Committee began meetings reviewing an event from April 11, 2026, and five events from April 19, 2026, where Waymo’s autonomous vehicles didn’t recognize and drove past ramp closure signs into the pre-planned freeway construction zones. This took place in Phoenix, Arizona. Separately, on May 18, 2026, seven Waymo vehicles entered freeway lanes with active construction in the San Francisco Bay Area by driving between cones that were placed to show the lane was closed. On the back of both of these events, Waymo restricted freeway driving until it could address the issue. In June, Waymo’s Safety Board reviewed the issue and additional information related to ADS performances around construction zones; then, as a result, it decided to conduct a recall. This development is not good for Waymo as it adds to a growing list of technical hiccups its cars have experienced. Ultimately, it will lead to more scrutiny from lawmakers around the world who will be more cautious about letting autonomous vehicles on their roads without tighter regulation. For readers in areas where Waymo operates, does this news make you more wary about stepping into one of these vehicles?
    • I'm still on Windows 10 22H2 because I didn't want to deal with all the issues in Windows 11, so I waited almost a week before installing the latest Patch Tuesday update (KB5094127), I went ahead and did it, and it was a huge mistake—ever since then, my File Explorer has seen a performance drop of about 30% when transferring large files... Once again, Microsoft has outdone itself! This update cannot be uninstalled, either through the Control Panel (via Settings) or by accessing Advanced Startup Options. The only possible alternative would be to use system restore points, but I’d have to reinstall all app and driver updates (and there’s no guarantee it would work). Or there’s the “nuclear option” of a in-place repair without losing files or apps, but even then, all my customizations would be lost! Microsoft just can’t help but mess everything up! Way to go, Microsoft! But I still don’t want your c****y Windows 11!
