BSNL launches DataOne- India's most awaited Broadband service

BSNL's Broadband service -- DataOne was launched officially on 14 January, 2005 simultaneously in the metros of Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore.

BSNL's DataOne is supposed to provide data at speeds between 256Kbps and 2Mbps, 4.5 times faster than the regular dial-up. BSNL also promises to add Video on Demand and Broadband TV like services. The rollout that began on 14 January 2005 is expected to cover 200 cities in the next two months.

While at the launch of DataOne at Chennai, Shri N Ram, Editor – The Hindu said that the existing 7 million Internet userbase was very small when compared to the 90 million Internet users in China. It's also been observed that all the Internet users in China were virtually Broadband users. Continuing with his speech, he said "The success of Broadband in these countries can be attributed to the Broadband policies designed by those countries. Similarly to ensure the success of Broadband in India, we too need to have an effective policy that would ensure its penetration into the rural areas while making it popular in the urban India."

DataOne services, launched on 14 January 2005 shall be provided on the existing copper infrastructure. Subsequent to high speed Internet service, other services such as VPN, multicasting, video conferencing, video-on-demand and broadcast application shall also be added. Broadband service will be provided through the deployment of Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line technology. ADSL allows copper telephone pairs to be used to provide a Broadband connection. It provides 'always-on' Internet that is automatically established once the PC and ADSL modem are switched on.

The broadband network will consist of different sizes of Digital Subscriber Line Access multiplexers (DSLAMs) which represent first point of presence for broadband customers. The DSLAM shall provide access upto 20 Mbps based on ADSL/ ADSL 2plus ITU –T G992.1/G992.3 and G992.5. They are connected to LAN switches, which aggregate the traffic coming from all DSLAMs of a city into a Gigabit Ethernet link over dedicated fiber. The network shall be centrally managed from Network Operating Centres (NOC) located at two sites one of them being the master at Bangalore and the other disaster recovery site at Pune.

I have been paying Rs. 650 per month (installation charge was Rs. 1200) for 64 kbps (advertized speed, the real download speed is like 3 kBps, absolutely sucks) ever since I moved back to India and now BSNL is offering 256 kbps for only Rs. 500 (Rs. 500 modem charge). Great deal! I am going to subscribe starting February.

What do you expect for Rs.500. Moon !! :o

And the fact that BSNL came out with a Broadband should be appreciated. I have nothing to do with any telecom company , I am just a ordinary Indian citizen. Once people get used to 256K, they will want more and for that want they will be ready to pay more. Simple economics. Instead of acting in a typical old indian fashion, be happy of the changes happening. Grow up.

When?

How much?

I am not working in the Sales dept nor am i the owner so i dont know about the COST ...

But i am sure it will be fitting into every Middle Class family's budget ...

The testing has already been started and 4 months have elapsed .... Its been given to all the BIG SHOTS of the company ppl .... the testing trial period is over and we are just waiting for the TRAI ( telecom regulatory authority of India ) to cut some costs ( for mobile ) which we are plannin to pass 100% to the customers ...

So that we can get a clear picture of the cost that we can levy on the customers ..

we are also waiting for the Mukesh-Anil fight to settle down a little bit ( 2 bros of the company who are fighting for equal stake )

no more comments

and btw i dint know about the 6 months no data limit if u can elaborate or send me a PM or email wud b gr8 :)

First of the three photos has this text on it (you can see that it's there but it's not clear in the pic):

EARLY BIRD BONANZA

For all Home and Business subscribers joining before March 31, 2005, additional usage charges (Rs/MB) will not be levied upto June 30, 2005

the 1gb limit isnt that bad for the people who only reads email or online forums..

I did a little survery a month back ... for one day i just checked emails, visited forums ... and i dint download any file .... ( and FYI i dint visit any pr0n site ) i had consumed around 87MB that day ....

as i said earlier it wudnt be fitting in the MB budget of mine

    • Not such a great deal, Ultimate, which gives you full 5080 features is $181.99 CAD per month, that's $2183.88 per year, I can buy the 5080 for $1809.99 CAD, then it goes up to $279.99 per month after the first billing cycle. Typical cloud rental, costs more than buying the hardware.
    • Wow, spoken like a true blind hater, you don't even provide arguments. Please, go check my comment above to @seacaptain and you'll find out why what you say doesn't make sense in this context...
    • Get used to this, with AI tooling now uncovering new vulns and getting them exploitable far faster than has ever been possible before software is going to need to be updated far more frequently. Back in the day it may take reseachers weeks or months to do what AI can now do in hours. Once its a threat is discovered it's weaponsized far more quickly, meaning you simply can't be waiting 2, 3, 4 weeks to deploy a patch, it needs to be patched immediately. Going to be interesting handling this in the enterprise space where traditionally patching has been steady, but very staged (and rightly so up until now), that is going to have to change.
    • You don't need to "close all browser sessions constantly" or wait for updates to install. The updates download in the background while you use the browser, without interrupting you, they install automatically the next time you launch the app. And they install very fast (depending on your storage speeds, of course), you have to wait at most 2-3 extra seconds, if any. Seems like you haven't used Edge in a loooooooong time...
