Cloud Geek
Uh oh, Microsoft. Okay, we can?t vouch for the validity of this right now, but word has it that a particular Japanese site has discovered a method to break Microsoft?s Windows Media DRM 10 on WMV files (which is Windows Media Video, if you haven?t been paying attention). No word on whether the two apps that aim to do it (DrmDbg and DRM2WMV) can be retooled for decrypting DRM?d audio files (WMA), and it looks like you need to have a license for the content you want to crack in the first place?though obviously once the DRM is stripped away, you should be generally able to do whatever you want with the file (share it online, transfer it to a personal video player, etc.). http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000900029916/
neo_joel
Not really a surpirse, i was expecting someone, somewhere to try and find a way around DRM, it was just a matter of time really.
cal2002
yet another article, sounds like it might not last that long. "It should also be noted that because of the architecture of WMRM this potential break does not mean that the tools will be valid to use in the future." http://msmvps.com/chrisl/archive/2005/01/31/34499.aspx ^ that is kind of interesting, it true. They would have to change how the key and seed are stored in memory, no?

[Fosters]
DrmDbg and DRM2WMV are old tools. Would have worked in 2002. They don't work with DRM 10. Much ado about nothing.

John Veteran Posted February 1, 2005 Veteran Share Posted February 1, 2005 Wow, if I have a license to play a file, I can decrypt it! :o Congratulations on that monumental discovery
NetRyder
Microsoft security means u can crack in within months or days  585396646[/snapback] In case you didn't know, Apple's FairPlay DRM has been cracked a few times already (Google search for Hymn and JHymn). It's actually surprising that it took so long to crack Windows Media DRM...if this story is even true, that is. ;)
