the wallpaper camed with gnome 2.10 ... so i don't know exactly how to get it ...

Starring: Kopete and Konqueror as their respective selves, Beep Media Player also as itself (with lots of make-up - it's a bit insecure), and gnome-terminal: the outcast, trying desperately to fit in with the KDE environment.

The icons? Snow.E 2 from Rad.E8, though I got the icons from KDE-Look.org as they are more suited for use on Linux.

I found the immensely cool wallpaper over at DeviantArt. It's in a self-extracting .exe, so you should go ahead and buy Windows to enjoy and appreciate the wonderful automation that the author worked so hard to put in. Alternatively, you can extract it with whichever rar unpacker you favour.

God, I love linux desktops. I've never seen a windows desktop that could compare to even the most plain of linux 'tops.

I have tried it, still using it in fact. I use windows too, I'm working on ditching windows alltogether.

Same here. Not much work to do on my part. I only need a web browser, IM client, IRC client and a basic word processor. As far as I can tell Linux has _better_ alternatives for all of these options.

This would be really cool for an extra thread, as well as screenshots, also have one with peoples movie captures showing off their desktops.

I love looking at other peoples creations of desktops, but they are all static, so you cannot see how the desktop actually works!

What do you think?

p.s. I'll post my screenshot one day, when I can make a decent one ;)

exactly. windows lacks any kind of transparency or shadows. to top it off, it is a pain in the ass to change themes and to make them as well.

that said,

yesterday in hte kde vs gnome thread i said i disliked gnome because metacity didnt have any good themes.

kwin --replace

fixed that

still prefer kde though :p

I like gnome more, however, I found it to be a bit off. I'd go to open some links and whatnot and they were broken. I'm not a linux guru. I could fix it, but it's just not woth it to me. So, KDE has stuck for the time being.

Actually, it seems that Win2k & XP have transparency that is just not utilized. Here is a utility that I use on my Win PC at work to make transparent windows in Windows: http://home.insightbb.com/~ryanvm/tinyutilities/vitrite/

It's rather off-topic for this thread (and heck, as a Windows app, it is off-topic for this group of forums!), but Windows does have some of these features (even some time ago). Linux just has more frequent updates and is constantly evolving, where Windows jumps from release to release. (plus Linux is more open, and was built to be modified, making this sort of work easier)

but things like the taskbar when made transparent with these apps look horrible(you can barely read the text) and it doesnt work well when you have it set on autohide.

setting a windows opacity is one thing, but actually having objects that contain both trasnparent and opaque parts is impossible with xp. this will all change with longhorn however, although the hardware requirements would be much higher than in linux to get a similair effect.

Yup, thats right. Put thim in ~/.enlightenment/wallpapers/ restart enlightenment, and they are there :)

Or you can make a symlink to where your wallpapers reside so you don't have to hunt every where else for wallpapers for other desktops.

ie: ln -s ~/images/backgrounds ~/.enlightenment/wallpapers

Yap that's true. WinXP can't handle that. Sure you can use some small hacks

and programs to accomplish some sort of fake non-hardware accel transparency.

U could even use a feature provided with the NVIDIA drivers for the taskbar to look

transparent, but that looks really bad, text will be almost unreadable.

There is also this one hack: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/14520746/

It allows you to have the taskbar transparent. What you need to do is to:

-open the wall you are going to be using with PhotoShop;

-edit the wall (copy paste the down part into another image provided as template);

-edit the VS openning it with a program called Reshack or some other style builder;

-find the key for the taskbar bmp in the VS

-make the VS use that pixmap created with PhotoShop;

-Hack you shell32 so it may allow you to use non-Microsoft themes;

Now you have a complete transparent taskbar on Windows ...

Do you? It's not even close to that, it's a cheep hack and if you change the wall

you have to start the hack process all over again :laugh:

There are some apps that try to emulate transparency, like foobar for instance (wich

lags all over the place if you enable it).

In Linux desktops hardware accel effects and even fake transparency are done for sometime

now, and new effects and features will come.

Yes, when i add the new section to xorg.conf (to enable shadows) i lost 3d acceleration so... this's the reason why i ask how to enable shadows using xorg
