if you measure by size of install, then i think VoptXP is the smallest..only 3megs.

i think Norton SpeedDisk lays out files most logical and optimal way.

directory entries and MFT+ reserved space to very begining of the disk, followed by custom "files placed 1st", after that comes "frequently accessed" files, followed by "infrequently modified", followed by "normal" files, followed by "frequently modified", followed by free space, followed by "infrequently accessed" files, followed by custom "files placed last".

yes, it is not as fast as say diskkeeeper8, but i think it improves performance more than diskkeeper...i think it's better to have optimal file layout like w/ speeddisk and have 2-3 fragmented files, rather than unoptimal layout and have 0 fragmented files

that does seem the fastest way but what about gaming

wouldnt having loads of the games files spread out all over the disk slow performance down

i've been using diskeeper just recently and it works great..but i dont particularly like the set it and forget it because at random it just starts defragging and sometimes makes me pc slow down..depending on what im doing...it can be a lot or not very much..so i just set it so i defrag when i want :p

Today's hard disks are too fast to benefit from defraging. You don't need to defrag any more.

Maybe for those people that can get top-of-the-line pc's, but for the majority of us we have to stick to older HDDs. My choice? Diskeeper. Fast, easy and I see the results.

no matter how "fast" your disk is, if its heavily fragmented, the head is going to be skipping and jumping arount the platters like a madman. It may help to keep your drive working for longer to defrag it, simply because there are less sudden changes of direction for the head, and more smooth sweeps.

Scorbing - XP's defragger is a version of Diskeeper

but it's an older very, very basic one (tailor-made)

and not a 'patch' on the modern engines, e.g. v8. I'd

use the Home Edition, any day, over XP's 'built-in' -

one of XP's 'components' I wish I could completely

remove.

Raxco's (one-pass) PerfectDisk, O&O, and Diskeeper

seem to be the big three, at least for networks. I

really don't know which is 'the best'. Finding several

reliable independent reviews which highlight the same

defragger against the others is difficult. I suspect they

all have their own strengths.

Otherwise, VoptXP gets excellent reviews. It's certainly

quick.

I'm using 2 x Maxtor Atlas 15K Ultra 320.

They need defragging!

I use Perfect Disk, non-bloated, works fast, and simply, I just love it.

Diskeeper - I had to reinstall Windows because I couldn't boot into Windows after the boot-time defrag

Speed Disk - Well Norton Systemworks doesn't work on my computer for some reason, and plus, it wasn't that great

O&O Defrag - Kinda bloated IMHO. And it took very long and confusing to use.

O&O Defrag - Kinda bloated IMHO. And it took very long and confusing to use.

you kidding me, right? ok i admit i was confused first time i ran it, but after spending 5 min on it i understood everything i need. i find it fast, i love the 'stealth mode' and it can run togher with a lot of other programs running and still do a good job.

btw, i have not tried voltXP, so i dont know - but i find o&o better the diskeeper and perfectdisk (definetly better then buildin) oh and norton speeddisk will not run properly on my pc at all - it complaints that someone accessed harddisk all the time (i have all program run by user, not system, shut off from task manager and it did not help)

o&o :D

I prefer O&O Defrag... version 6 is REALLY fast, analysing a volume takes only 1-3 seconds in comparison to over a minute for version 4. It has a simple interface and IMO is easier to use than others. It looks good and runs well. It managed to defrag my 7mb (yes, mb) partition in less than a second :D, lol. Also, check out the websites to these programs - Diskeeper is purely progaganda and has big "200% Speed Increase" signs; I think it's safe to say that it is aimed at complete n00bs - still, at least the website gave me a laugh with the "unimaginable power lurks beneath the surface" part.

    • Did Labour lose big? They had losses there is no doubt. However let's look at the reality. The conservatives have 168 councils I believe. Labour have 113 and Reform...38. That's a lot of growth for Reform granted. But that is not a wipeout, Reform don't have the majoring in fact at 76 I believe the Liberal Democrats have nearly twice the councils Reform do. So I am thinking there is a lot more noise than signal going on here. Now then let's talk about the law. It's an age restriction. We do it for cigarettes, **** and alcohol. This idea that some kids will find there way around it so it's not worth even trying is really really sad. Hell we can't stop every murder. Should we stop trying there too? That is the logical conclusion.
    • A game not selling doesn't mean the people working on it did "bad work". It reviewed decently well. It was also on gamepass on release.
