i had problems with diskkeeper. it worked nice, and was pretty fast, but it screwed with my boot record too many times, which required me to take time to fix it. O&O works nicely for me. not as fast IMO, but it does a great job overall.

yep! Executive software have since pulled it from their site (or so it seems) in favour of a trial version of the full deal. The Lite version was freeware, and had all its features of the Pro taken out except the ability to manually defrag. the speed was what you'd expect from the Pro version as well, so it definately kicked the built-in version's butt. lemme see if i can find a link to show you..

/edit here you go

or directly.. seems like its still on Executive Softwares server.. just not linked from the site. (that i could find)

That happened to me too; I had to take my drive to another computer to rescue my files and when I did this it messed up the permissions on all of them. I had to copy all my stuff to a FAT32 partition to get it all sorted out. Anyway I swore I would never use a third party defrag utility again. :(

Built-in XP one my bottom! Damn thing won't let me Defrag my E partition because XP has marked it as dirty although it checks as OK with CHKDSK (and it refuses to clear the dirty bit after a sucessful check). Diskeeper Lite I love you and it doesn't have to run at startup either.
