I've been in contact with Google press relations over the last few hours. They promised me a statement soon. I honestly dont think a macintosh legal threat forced them to shut the site down.

Its actually been an interesting day for me. I didnt think writing that article would get this much publicity. CNet put the Neowin post on their front page today, and several mac enthusiast sites jumped all over it.

Here's a quote from one of them I found pretty funny:

The Google homage to Apple is pretty sweet. But all the pro-Mac OS X comments on Neowin.net might be even sweeter. Didn't they used to be one of the biggest pro-Microsoft and anti-Apple sites out there? Times sure are a' changin'.

If it is true that Apple had something to do with the removal of the googlex page, then I'm going to be one dissapointed guy. I really do despise the tactics that Apple has used here reciently, mainly freaking out over that iPod Shuffle "copycat."

I also believe that Google did use the Dock idea but they did it the correct way, they put resignation where it was needed, and they did it in a very proper and non-patent infringing way.

I know the saying goes "theres no such thing as bad plubicity." But if Apple did go after Google, this is just another bullet in the chamber thats aimed at the Apple.

What happened to that cool thing I was playing around with last week

The prototypes on Google Labs are meant to be low maintenance experiments. If one disappears it may be because no one was interested enough to use it, it wasn't stable enough for users to try it out, or it was so wildly successful that heavy usage brought the server to its knees. While that particular application may not reappear, there should be something equally interesting to replace it shortly.

It'll never be gone now, too many people got it hosted else where. And we don't know for sure if it was Apple or not that was the reason it was tooken down... though it wouldn't suprise me...

Mirror :shifty:

My reply to all you people saying "OMG WTF TEH FECKING APPLE TAKED IT DOWN WHTY DID THEY MAKE THE GOOGLE DO THAT IT WAS SO COOL OMG WTF I HATE APPLE CUZ APPLE SUX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!":

Please shut up. There is ABSOLUTELY ZERO proof that Apple sued google. You're all idiots. I don't care if I get banned for my first post... you're all 2 l33t 2 h4ndl3.

Plus, it was just a nifty javascript trick. You could do it from scratch yourself.

Here's a hint:

Welp, whatever the reason, I might just use a variant on my site. If it turns out that there was a snotty phone call (threatening crap) from Apple, it makes zero difference to me. I don't have software patents in my civilised part of the world.

    • I cannot believe this is a news post from Neowin. This should be embarassing, coming from a "senior editor". Is it your first day using Windows?! Maybe it's time to find a new Windows news site.
    • It's from having Core Isolation enabled in Windows security settings, which is a good thing!  It's letting you know it's not loading the Bonjour module as it's not signed in a way it would prefer. Bonjour was most likely installed along with iTunes. Feel free to disable that message using the checkbox.
    • I'm looking forward to starting over online. I have no reason to keep all the money, cars, rank after 13 years. Now if I can just move my character itself and nothing else. I would be fine with that. But I doubt they would do a setup that way.
