While I do agree with the sentiment that pre-teens and young teens do not entirely represent any actual relationship, as it is increasingly a way to be 'cool,' I feel that it is another way of experiencing social relationships. Schools have emerged not only as academic centres, but also as a social environment. Students are finding out their identities and moving through puberty. They must learn how to interact with their peers, especially the opposite sex. Banning anything only restricts one's growth.

AMEN!

nothing new really,  back in 5th grade; about ten years ago at my school, we had an assembly talking about no "Public Displays of Affection". of course that was a private Catholic school.

4 years ago when I was in 9th grade (wow, not that long ago but so distant in my memories), I had the same problem at a public school, they even made rules on "public displays of affection" mainly because of me :p Then again they opted for satellite cable for the staff rooms instead of air conditioning, and if you were in a group of more than 4 people walking around you were considered a threat. Twisted middle school, glad its over with.

No hugging sucks, I mean I see lots of like 10-13 year old girls hugging each other when they meet. Like one stands at one end of the hall and hollers the others name and they run toward each other with their arms open and are like, "OH MY GOD! like, whats new?" I just wonder what would happen if all the students deliberatly hugged each other all day sometime.. like is there a suspension carried with it? each class would have like 2 people in it.

At my high school the rule is no hugging, but we do it anyway.

And since it's close to the end of the year, most of the teachers are pretty lenient about it.

Except for a few.

I think it's the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. I hug some of my teachers, even!

If I may ask, where are you going? I've contemplated the same thing, and I cant seem to find many other alternatives...

Canada? :)

edit:  Oh yea, I forgot about the "If you pick up a snowball during winter you're in trouble" rule too.

585874286

Hah, we have something like that. Except we only get yelled at if we get caught picking up snow. :D

If that rule ever came into effect in my school, i'd hug my girlfriend anyways. They can't take that away from me. :)

Just like at my highschool. They basically lifted the no hugging thing, because everyone does, I guess as long as your not making out *thinks of broom closet* or something it's ok. :ninja:

This is stupid. Showing some form of affection for someone is one of the key areas in maturing.

It's kinda funny that in that school it's mainly girls hugging each other. If this ban applied to my school... ech, it wouldn't matter that much anyway. (Being in a single gender school, at least hugging doesn't occur that much. Resting hands on shoulders... that's something else.)

They've already banned skirts in my school board.

Same. Haven't seen anyone penalized for that so far.

What does freedom of speech have to do with making out at junior high when you're 13?

585876009

Freedom of speech is akin to freedom of expression, and that is most certainly what it is. It is an expression of friendship, of emotion, and of faith. Friendship is obvious and so is emotion... as for faith, its an expression of their faith in that person. These rights are granted to all people no matter what age.

What comes into question here tho, is the schools right to remove such freedoms inside their walls. It has been a long argued issue, and at the moment, schools are winning. They are winning this argument bc we, as adults, have to put our faith in them to teach our kids. It is within this faith that they have been entrusted with making the school environment as conducive to learning as possible.

This argument however does not mean that I personally am in favor of this schools steps to create a more conduce environment for learning. As I have stated earlier in the thread, hugging is simply another step in the long road to maturity. I do not believe it is right to strip these children of their right to express their feelings, and ultimately learn more about themselves on their journey

Well I knew who I was when I was about 16 some people are different. Instead of telling kids what to do and what not to do we need to teach them what to do and what not to do. In that I mean as adults we need to act in ways that reflect respect and responsibility to so or young ones how its done to protect ther and our future.

I am just saying its easyer to say dont do that then to actually show someone how its done. Instead of banning hugs and passing out condoms at school parents and teachers need to reflect good values so kids know not what to do and know what to do. But in these days its hard when you have teachers using drugs in front of the class and parents not taking action for anything anymore.

But in the end sad to say what gose around comes around what you do now reflects and will repet in the future and a ulgy cycle will continue on and get worse and words like respect and responsibility will cease to exist.

    • Why say “Retarded” then? Lol
    • If you don't care to read what I said, then you prove my point. Maybe written media is beyond your attention span. Titles are not summaries my friend.
