My elementalist/monk is up to level 10 now. But damn there's SO many skills to get. I thought they were kidding when they touted that, wow. Heh.

Just tried PVP for the first time, wasn't pretty :|

Cool - I went for the same combo: elementalist/monk. It creates quite a rounded character.

Just hit level 11. Also just got a decent bow, 14-27 damage and I've had it customized. So plus 20% makes it:

16.8 - 32.4.    Cost me 500, but I'm not short on money at the moment so I've just bought loads of stuff. I really want to go up into the mountains, I'm trying to do as many quests as possible so that I can get up there, which quest will send me off to yak's bend?

I think the mission at Nolani Academy will take you to Yak's Bend...

Also, if anyone is in need of a good map for this game i like the one here:

thats a old map

Well, I'm nearly up to level 7 but the game keeps crashing on me (the screen goes into standby mode, then comes back garbled and then the sound loops). I'm in Ascalon about to head over to Regent Valley. It's really annoying as the game is great.

I hope either an ATi driver update or a game update will fix it, but I have no idea what the issue is.

BTW, any Neowin guilds that are open to players like me?

I'll give you an invite into Arcana Eternum if you'd like. We are not an "official" Neowin guild but we have lots of neowinians so send me a PM with in-game name if you'd like to join us.

just a quick update for everyone The Vampirates, ranked 25 at ladder.guildwars.com

has anyone faced off in a gvg vs Negative Zero? these guys are good and run an almost all ranger build.

the only thing we have been able to do is try and run a fear me spam against them and hope we can dwindle down their energy. if anyone plays them and finds a way to beat their build let me know.

It's a mmorpg yes. The community is quite nice, for sure far better than the WoW community. There is no monthly payment so thats a plus (even though the game would be worth it even with that). The game is quite interesting and so far I've had plenty of fun in it, including some nice PvP.

Support is also great. You can find some community sites and forums here.

Vampirates? THIS the neowin guild??

i have played negative zero. No issit? i dont remeber if i won or lost though :x

nah thats not the neowin guild. its a guild that is a dummy guild off Agony (www.agony-guild.com)

Negative Zero is not very good in hall of heroes but they are very effective at guild vs guild battles. if you play them in a gvg then you'll understand what i mean. maybe i'll throw on FRAPS and record a fight.

But it's not really a MMORPG, because all the missions and explorable areas are "instanced" so there are only about 8 people in each area at one time, and the towns each have numerous Districts so that when one fills up another district is created.

It's also less of a traditional online RPG in that there's none of the minutae like Alchemy, Crafting etc....that you tend to associate with the generic MMORPG.

The devs call it a CORPG (cooperative online RPG), cause it's more about getting a small group together and beating the crap out of either another guild/team or doing missions/quests/exploring.

Semantics eh...:)

It's still an MMO in the sense that no matter what district/city your friends are in, you can communicate and set up a party with them. All of the areas outside of the towns are instanced though, which has many advantages. There's no kill stealing, and no spawn camping because there are always enough enemies for you to take on. Plus, when you are grinding with a party, regular drops are randomly assigned to a player and gold is divided evenly among the party. So no bitching over what belongs to who.

I've also found that the economy is more interesting than WoW in several ways. I'm only a N/Me7, but I haven't come across any auction houses yet--everything is handled the old-fashioned way, by sending a message over the trade channel to let everyone know what you're selling/looking for. There's a cool "gambling" type of thing too, but lots of people try to rip you off.

Piercehead makes a good point when he says there is no monotonous duties like crafting, etc. Crafting armor is actually quite easy, as you bring the required materials to crafters and they do the work for you. Dyes are a neat way to customize your look, but it's frustrating to see people blow all their money on cosmetic stuff when they really can't afford it. Black and silver dyes are particularly expensive.

Well, I picked this up, and I have to say so far Im not really impressed - they might as well have just called this Lineage III and be done with it.

Running through the different classes, hopefully Ill find something that just 'feels' right.

Crafting system is a pain, if someone is an armourer, they should SELL armour, not make you run around collecting items, or buying crafting items from another NPC trader.

Levelling, well, I know it doesnt matter what level you are for the most part but I prefer the more traditional 'you get a new skill per level' or alternate level skills. I dont particularly mind having to travel to another trainer to get skills - but with the wealth of skills you can get, and the fact that you can mix subjob skills too, why the hell did they only give you eight slots?? Really lets the game down.

Character customisation? Hardly worth mentioning - the game hasnt been out very long and very quickly I managed to find people that looked exactly the same as me.

Um, what else...

NPC team mates - I actually liked this aspect, you should be able to do this is all games where grouping is required, the NPCs actually seemed quite intelligent in picking off enemies, I just wish I could have set one as point to go to one enemy instead of me having to be damaged first before they would respond.

Glitches - this game has glitches, and plenty of them. The map really needs to be cleaned up, the paths really arent very smooth and there is rubberbanding everywhere (character walks forward, glitches, and appears back where you started).

Last thing, really, is the fact that most of the people on whatever server I am on tend to be non-english europeans, germans, french (*shiver*) and so on.

Havent played with the PVP aspect yet, perhaps Ill find it more fulfilling.

Phew - all that and didnt mention WoW once *whoops*

Well I really like the game, but we'll see how long it keeps me interested.

I'm lvl 16 with a Monk/Ranger and seem to be enjoying it but I only have half the map explorered.

As far as the 8 skill slots, I think the skills is what makes your character unique, not say, how much true points you put in a skill or something like a traditional RPG.

So while my monk/ranger has all the same skills as every other monk/ranger the fact that I have 8 slots means I may play totally different than another monk/ranger combo.

I think that's why there's only 8 slots, because it forces you to basically pick 8 and have a basic template and go from there. If everyone had all the skills equipped at the same time then we'd ll be the same character.

The camera in the game needs massive work however, and I've had the sound just stop twice on me. That said the game runs great, although everyonce in awhile I do get the rubber banding. I don't know if I hate rubber banding because in reality it oculd be represented in alot of different ways. It could just pause, slowly stutter, or rubber band, so I won't hold rubber banding against them because lag is a reality of the internet it'll happen from time to time.

    • Free Software Foundation Europe pushes EU to force Google to allow AI uninstalls on Android by Paul Hill Credit: Pexels Users should be able to fully uninstall AI-based features from Android devices and be able to access interoperability functions, free from Google’s verification requirements, the European Commission has heard as part of an Android interoperability consultation under the Digital Markets Act. These measures were proposed by the Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) last week when it submitted its documentation. The FSFE noted that Google had started silently installing AI models without telling users. It noted that the EU’s DMA requires companies like Google to allow users to uninstall pre-loaded software from their devices, but in the case of the AI models Google is installing, they reinstall if you delete them, contravening the DMA. To get Google back under control, the FSFE has told the European Commission that there needs to be improvements within the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). First, it said that users should be able to fully remove pre-loaded AI components from their devices, with companies being prohibited from silently reinstalling or reactivating them. Second, access to Android interoperability features should not be contingent on registration, authorization, or contractual relationships with Google. This pertains to Google’s attempt to force developers to register with Google, even to publish apps to alternative app stores like F-Droid. Discussing its submission, Lucas Lasota, FSFE Legal Programme Manager, said: Google is planning to roll out its Android Developer Certification in September 2026. This will force every Android app developer to register with Google before their software can be installed on certified Android devices, but it should affect those who have removed Google Apps from their device. The program is controversial because it entails the signing of contracts and payment of account fees to Google, as well as the handing over of the identities of developers. It said: The FSFE said that if the Commission’s draft measures remain unchanged, then Google will be allowed to make developers verify their identity. The FSFE believes that asking developers to register is contrary to the text and spirit of the law. In summary, the FSFE has told the Commission that no developer should need a Google account, a Play Store presence, or any agreement with Google to access Android’s interoperability features.
