Bushrat
Hi, Just out of curiosity.... How big is the neowin MySQL database? It must have to be at least 1-10gb? Thanks. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/316235-how-big-is-the-nw-mysql-db/ Share on other sites

Lare2
Neowin should install a bot that automatically answer that question, since it pops very often. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/316235-how-big-is-the-nw-mysql-db/#findComment-585870082 Share on other sites
Bushrat
^ lmfao Well, yeah 5Gb is big for a mysql database. But think about how much extra space they have left over. There are bigger databases i have come across, but damn. 5 Gb for a forum. Thats a lot of text. Thanks for that Tim :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/316235-how-big-is-the-nw-mysql-db/#findComment-585870909 Share on other sites

semaja2.net
hey what if we have like a php script on the front page which displays the details on the server like sql size, cpu usage, space? and a link to the specs or someother cool stuff Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/316235-how-big-is-the-nw-mysql-db/#findComment-585870935 Share on other sites

Narlzac85
does a database like this include any kind of compression? Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/316235-how-big-is-the-nw-mysql-db/#findComment-585873716 Share on other sites
wired57
it could but that uses more ram and cpu time, so usually no Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/316235-how-big-is-the-nw-mysql-db/#findComment-585873730 Share on other sites
j.r.l.
It would be cheaper not to use compression on a site this huge... Let's say CPU X costs $320/mo. and it has 6 80GB hdds (scuzzy/SCSI) and a 5GB db... compared to a $400 server with CPU Z and 6 80GB hdds and a 2gb db (compressed)... And whilst we're on it -> what's average CPU load on Neowin servers? No, why would we want to compress the data? We've got a RAID 5 machine running the DB right now, so that's more than enough space to hold the DB. Space isn't an issue, speed is. More indexes do cost more disk space, but we don't care when there's a faster query speed to be had. And whilst we're on it -> what's average CPU load on Neowin servers? DB server's hovering around 1 (with 2 CPUs). The web servers are more spikey and it depends on the time of day and other factors. Using RAID5 is kinda of killing your performance.isn't it?. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/316235-how-big-is-the-nw-mysql-db/#findComment-585875210 Share on other sites
j.r.l.
Timdorr, you denied what I said but you pretty much said the same thing about you not wanting to use compression :p 1 load isnt bad on a busy MySQL server... Do you have CPU load problems sometimes? Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/316235-how-big-is-the-nw-mysql-db/#findComment-585877588 Share on other sites
