[Definitive] Sony PS3 Thread

i understand what you're saying Tjalian, but a memory card slot would make the ps3 look slightly ugly as it just wouldnt fit with the rest of the console.

i think it's better that they phase out the overly-priced memory card. so some people will be annoyed they cant carry on from a previous save...but they'll just have to start again and save on the memory stick :)

Like f**k are loads of people are going to start over again on GT4, DMC3, GTA SA, God of War, and so on and so forth just because Sony are trying to encorporate a new storage medium.

I try not to hate the PS3 too much(not a massive sony fan to say the least, although there are some PS2 games I like), but this feature (or lack-of-feature I should say) ****es me right off. I've spent hours on DBZ Budokai 3, and now you're telling me that I can't use all of my 60,000Y+ moves when I bung it in my PS3?

Its almost making a mockery out of the gamers, IMO. Sony should at least say 'listen, here's a 2 in 1 USB device where you can put in your mem card and stick, and transfer the saves over, and it'll cost ?19.99 - ?29.99'. While I'd be slightly annoyed they're making money at the gamers expense (again), at least you could transfer saves over!

EDIT: A) The PS3 and its controller prototype look fugly already, who cares if you have to put in a mem stick that sticks out a little? B) The Black controllers definately didn't fit with the Silver Slimine PStwo, and nobody really cared then, so why now? C) Some people will actually buy the Black PS;);)

Well Fiddle My Sticks :o

Shame the PS3 won't accept any of the Memory Cars used for the PS1 and PS2 (even official ones), so unless there's some way to upload PS2 and PS1 saves from your Memory Stick, to your PC, and then get your Mem Stick on your PC, transfer the saves from your PC and onto your Mem Stick to play on the PS3 (if the file saves are accepted, of course, this is assuming), that's the only way you can play your PS1 and PS2 games while having your save files.

NO idea why they haven't got PS1 and PS2 mem card slots, I mean, they got sued for the controller, not their own patented mem card *rolls eyes*

586679221[/snapback]

did they really get sued for the controller, when and by who?

NO COOKIE FOR YOU, MAJIN!

Immersion, the company who originally held the patent for the 'vibration tech' used in both the PS2 and X-Box controllers, sued both M$ and sony. M$, playing it wise, decided to pay them the original $30mil demanded, and also bought some of their stock as a friendly gesture, as a sign of friendship. Sony..on the other hand...decided to go **** you, and ignored the demand. Time went by, words were throw, parties were held, etc etc, and Immersion/The Court eventually demanded that Sony pay a whopping $90mil to Immersion corp, and all Dual Shock controllers (both 1 and 2) to be taken off of the shelves at a certain date (can't remember when, but I think we've passed that date, unsure though).

So, thanks to Sony being absolutely stubborn jackasses, you get teh bogus PS3 controller, which made Sony the laughing stock of E3(which made a nice change from Nintendo being the laughing stock ;)).

EDIT: The reason why Nintendo didn't get sued was because Nintendo developed their own 'vibration tech' for their controllers, they didn't copy immersions and not tell them ;)

Why not just play the game on the PS2 instead? Or be happy that you even have backwards compatibility with games? Your being alittle selfish, us Nintendo boys have never had it with consoles, but we all survived. Your whinging because you can't get your save games...start again, or just stick with the PS2.

In my opinion of course.

All I'm saying is, why give the people backwards compatibility and not have a slot for the old mem sticks. I mean, if Nintendo's Revolution can do it, why can't the PS3?

And, I dunno...even though I've stuck with Nintendo throughout..the fact there's been no BC for consoles until never really bothered me. Dunno why, heh.

I'm pretty sure the PS3 can't be backwards compatable due to the huge difference in the two consoles hardware.

So now we're talking about saved games... Here's my solution to the problem.

This should work aslong as the PS3 doesn't follow the way of the xbox and makes saved games have some stupid console specific whatnot or whatever they used.

Method one, run Execftp or uLaunchELF on your PS2 and download the save data files from the memory card onto your computer. Transfer them to the memory stick and there.

Method two, use your action replay, gameshark, xploder or whatever and export your save file onto your computer, then use PS2 Save Builder, load up the save file and extract the data, following the same idea as above... Transfer the save data onto the memory stick.

These are simple and easy to do. Of course this is only theory. Though backwards compatability with the Magicgate memory cards would be alot easier for everyone.

well you're wrong.

That's what I was thinking...but meh :p

sony have some kickass emulation. there is a large difference in hardware between the ps2 and ps1 isnt there (serious question)?

so they know what they're doing - the older games dont actually run directly on the hardware. the hardware emulates the old system to allow the games to work.

there are times when this doesnt work though. i think some ps1 games dont work on ps2 (although i've never experienced that :))

i think the problem microsoft have/had is with the GPU now being ati, instead of nvidia.

Just continue to play those games on your PS2. Or would that be too easy??:woot:t:

Actually that's wrong. The PS2 included PS1 chipset, which is why it worked so well. The PS3 will put Sony in the same boat as Microsoft. The PS3 will be completely different than the PS2, and this time I doubt Sony can afford to include the PS2 chipset. So very likely, Sony will do software emulation for the PS3 just like the Xbox 360 is doing. Sure Sony is claiming 100% compatibility now, just wait for that claim to be modified at launch, unless they include hardware and increase the cost.

If I have to keep on playing them on the PS2, why the hell should people be intrested in backwards compatibility for the PS3?

EDIT: Bhav - The PS2 originally didn't have 100% backwards compatbility, but then they soon released ones that are 100% compatible.

I'm sure if Sony doesn't make one, a third part company will make a memeory card > usb connector for like $10. So you can use your memory cards with the adaptor, transfer them to whatever storage medium you have, or put it on the harddrive if it has one.

yeah you're right sorry...but they're going backwards (no pun intended) with the latest revision of the ps2 slimline in japan; it's got less compatibility

MGS4

I didn't see this posted in this thread, so hopefully it hasn't been yet. But they finally released an mgs4 trailer that though not HD looks much better than the ones from before. It would've been way more exciting if it was available from the first day they revealed the game though.

Actually this will allow for much better emulation from the Playstation 3. The reason the Playstation 2 was not really capable of increasing the visual quality of PS1 games was simply because the PS2 incorporated the chipset of the PS1, which meant when you popped in a PS1 game the PS2 would simply activate the PS1 chipset and run the game that way. The PS2 was still able to upgrade some ofthe texture quality and decrease load times but that was it. For the PS3 however the Cell processor will be able to emulate the chipset of the PS2 quite easily ( PPE + 7*SPE vs. EE-GS+VU0 + VU1 ) and at the same time incorporate various " easy " graphical increases. Such as hardware loaded FSAA, enrichment of textures from low-res to high-res, added FLOP muscle eliminating slowdown, and various other techniques of that nature.

The backward compatibility feature of the PS3 is actually one of the features I'm most excited about because PS2 games could get a vastly superior graphical boost from the Cell processor.

it's got less compatibility

Most of them are PS2 games, so its a hardware changed that messed something up. Tekken 5 was the latest game that had problems. Maybe 2% of all PS1 games are not working at all. Mostly the obscure games noone played anyway.

^^^ to be a little bit more specific, the chipset from the ps1 was included in the ps2 not only to make it backwards compatible, but also the used it to control *i think* the memory card and controller ports. Kinda shows how far current hardware has come, eh?

I don't think that they will do the same with the ps2 chipset as would be a crime to use such a powerful chip for such a mundane task. They will probably be able to use software emulation because of the "general prupose-ness" of the Cell and RSX architectures.

i think i understand what udontneed2know.

in addition to what kronosguy has said, the lack of a ps1/ps2 memory card slot in the ps3 further confirms that cell will take over the job of backwards compatibility.

i agree with udontneed2know...it'll be better for the games.

In some cases I do not think that is such a good thing. If you ever played the Silent Hill series on both the PC and PS2, I personally don't think it looks as good on the PC. The textures are way too sharp and it looses that "grainy" type of feeling that the PS2 creates because PC video cards correct or in some cases over-correct the problems. Also in some games it makes the characters look out of place on the backgrounds like with FF7\FF8 and Resident Evil 2. Since the characters are computer rendered, the video card will correct them, but the backgrounds are hand\computer drawn and do not have any AA or AF used on them, and it makes the characeters really stick out from the backgrounds. That and going from a 480i\p TV resolution to a 1600x1200 PC resolution doesn't help either, but they wouldn't be the case with the PS3 because it would probably still use whatever resolution the PS2 game uses.

I agree, which is why these options will be just like they are on the PS2. When you load in a PS1 game you can go to ... umm what is it .. lol, been awhile. I think Configure and then ( going off old memory here ) go to textures and click Better Textures and then for load times click Faster Load Times. It'll be the same for PS3 backward compatibility. You'll be able to choose, " FSAA x 4 " and " high res textures " and things like that. So you can turn it on, check out how the game looks and if it doesn't fit your liking just go back and turn it off.

I'm sure this is one thing that Sony will look deeper into once the PS3 is closer to complete. I have a feeling we will see some cool little features come from it.
