I will NEVER pay this to "try" Vista

I don't think anyone would just to try a beta OS. That's why they give you access to more than that, to make it worth the money.

I read the last 20 pages or so, but I didn't see my question answered. Is WPA incorporated into this beta? I assume so, just wanted to know for sure.

I will be installing in an hour.  what a let down I am setting myself up for.

I just hope it is stable enough to use on a day to day basis.

Only thing that HAS to work in order for me to use it on a daily basis is a third party firewall, although ATI drivers would be nice

I will NEVER trust the built-in firewall!

Summary

- Vista Beta 1 is out, currently only to those people who have MSDN access

- Screenshots of the final Beta build are still few and far between as people download the Win32 (~2.5 GB) and x64 (~1.7 GB) ISO dvd images from Microsoft. Most like Paul Thurott's are from pre-beta 1 or the 5203 screenshot leak. Microsoft posted a few on their presspass site

- Several Microsoft sites have gone live including:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/default.mspx

http://msdn.microsoft.com/windowsvista

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsvista/default.mspx

- A video talking about the beta has been posted on Channel9

- Connect beta users should have access sometime later today

Sounds good

So far for MSDN only

I wonder, why would they release it there but not to official beta testers first. Seems stupid IMO.

Anybody interested in a pool fund for Universal MSDN subscription? Vista Beta1 serial will be made available to contributors. At least it's an idea.

Do that on sites that allow warez talk etc. Take it off neowin, please.

Paul Thurott just posted a bunch of screenshots for build 5098 at his site.

It should obviously be pretty close to Vista Beta 1 / build 5112.

Beta testers will get it on Aug 3rd.  Only MSDN beforehand.

That seems almost backwards of that rumors first told... but then again, the way things have been said lately, who knows.

Either way... here's to hoping it's sooner than later :)

Man, I just hope MS has faster speeds this time than they did with RC XP... god that was slow at times.

Watching that Chris Jones video said the beta is coming in the afternoon. It's barely after lunch time in Remond. Give it some more time. I'm guessing after Vista got signed off, they threw it on MSDN right away. They are probably just getting it on Connect. No rush on their end. I can wait a few more hours. ;)

That's the spirit, you know what they say: "patience is a virtue" ;)

* installs msdn copy of beta 1 :p *

    • Alpine Linux 3.24 released with support for COSMIC Desktop and other improvements by David Uzondu Alpine Linux 3.24 has been released with updated system packages, including Linux kernel 6.18 and Rust 1.96. The team also added IPv6 support to the system installer, and they introduced automatic serial console configuration for headless setups. System76's COSMIC desktop environment is now available in the community repo. System76 originally started building this DE because its developers found GNOME to be pretty limited. Plus, it did not help that with virtually every GNOME update, the changes broke System76's custom desktop extensions. As for system packages, the Alpine team moved GTK+ 3.0 from the main repository to the community repository due to its legacy status. py3-setuptools has been upgraded to version 82.0.0, while the old pkg_resources module has been completely dropped. The team also removed outdated packages that still relied on py3-six and GTK+ 2.0. In addition to that, libsoup 2 has been removed because the library was affected by multiple security vulnerabilities. If you're a GRUB user, the Alpine Team said that you must manually run the grub-install command with your specific device or EFI options right after upgrading your system, otherwise, your computer may fail to boot properly with the newly updated GRUB 2.14 bootloader. New installations of Alpine Linux now offer an optional path to a /usr-merged directory layout if you set the BOOTSTRAP_USR_MERGED environment variable to 1 before you execute the setup-disk command. If you already run an older installation, you can migrate manually by installing the merge-usr package and executing its binary as the root user. The team recommends this layout to align Alpine with modern Linux standards, though you should verify your custom scripts before making the switch. Alpine Linux is a pretty tiny (~5MB) Linux distro built around musl libc, BusyBox, and OpenRC. It's been around since 2005, comes with its own package manager called Alpine Package Keeper (APK), and is widely used in modern cloud computing and software deployment.
